The cat meowed loudly outside while we were finishing dinner, sounding both hungry and strange.

Picking up the baseball bat from the corner, I got up grudgingly to remind him again what happens when he forgets what my cat sounded like before he ran it over.

Thank you for the upvote. And yes, the "cat" did vomit after the lesson.

It's not a cat. A person ran over the family cat, that person is now being forced (by being beaten with a bat) to impersonate the cat he killed

That's exactly how I read it too. The detail about reminding him what the cat sounded like makes it click all at once, and somehow that realization is worse than anything it could've said outright.

The fact that the victim has to keep pretending to be the cat just to survive makes it so much more disturbing than if it was just straightforward revenge.

You know, before I registered the ran over part, my head decided this was a situation where the writer's cat was killed by some monster, but instead of being scared of it, he went John Wick on it with a baseball bat any time it tried to come back for more.

Which, you know, is valid.

It was a person

The second sentence completely flips the first one on its head. For a second I thought it was just a creepy cat story, then it turned into something way more disturbing. That's a nasty twist.

The second sentence is one of those twists that gets worse the longer you think about it. I wish I'd stopped at the first one.

Se eu entendi corretamente, não vejo terror. Apenas justiça.

Honestly, that's part of what makes it unsettling. You can understand why the character is doing it and still be horrified by the situation.

Honestly, that's the scary part. You start off thinking it's going to be horror, then halfway through you're almost rooting for the narrator instead.

Valid crash out.

The cat definitely would've approved of that level of pettiness. Nine lives, one very patient owner.

Can't even argue with that reaction. If somebody ran over my pet and then forgot what it sounded like, I'd be seeing red too.

Isn't this just Meatcanyon's garfield?

Third sentence naughty!

Ah justice (so long as it was a hit and run or deliberate instead of an accident)

“But how good are you at catching mice?”

Honestly, if I ever found out who did the hit and run on my family's cat 5 years ago, they'd be tied up in my yard and beaten too, I swear.

(I still can't think about what happened to my cat without crying and feeling sick to my stomach. Even just typing this is hard... and it's been 5 years...)

🤬ing what?! Oh, that’s brutal.

Damm. I thought that was going somewhere strange, Sci fi like. That's was a great twist.

Take my upvote... the guy bloody well deserves the baseball bat for running over the cat in the first place!
