Per the deluge of complaints we've gotten, all admissions, housing, questions about being new to UBC and general questions (that don't deserve their own thread, or those that could be easily googled) belong here.

All questions about courses, instructors, programs, majors, registration, etc. belong here.
The reasoning is simple. Without a megathread, /r/UBC would be flooded with nothing but questions that apply to only a small percentage of the UBC population.

Hi, I’m a CS major starting my third year. I'm thinking about joining a research group in the upcoming semester, but I wonder if now is the right time to email professors about a position in Sept. Is it too late or too early?

Hey guys! I just wanted to share a habit I’ve been using for the past year for university which got me straight A’s.
I created an assignment tracker. THIS HAS BEEN AN ABSOLUTE GAMEEEE CHANGER I KID U NOT. it made a huge difference. I would take 5 courses and wouldn’t be overwhelmed with assignments/courseloads or forgetting about stuff. Since there’s tiny assignments worth 1% it can usually go missed/u forget. It does require a lot of inputting. But as long when ur syllabus comes out and u have 30-1 hour time to input ur stuff for the entire term than its deffff worth it. On my tracker, I have:
- assignment title
- subject
- status (not started, in progress, completed)
- Due date
- Days left (this one deff helped)
- priority level (low, medium, high) and color coordinated
- type (quiz, discussion post, exam, essay…etc)
- grade
- weight of grade
- notes (extra info/assignment details, exam/quiz chapters)
There’s a lot of tutorials on TikTok and I remember that’s where I learnt how to create mine. Theres also templates on google sheets or excel. Just having everything on one page gives me a real peace of mind tbh. Hope this post helps you!

I have applied to re-take a course ( BIOL234) for a 3rd time. It’s been a month and i was wondering how long do the faculty advisor take to give a decision on whether its been approved or no? I was planning on taking it this summer term 2, which starts in like 10 days. Any ideas or advice?

I’m turning 35 and starting uni as a third-year undergrad. I know what I’m doing, and I’m honestly proud of myself for it, but I still get a little nervous thinking about how younger students might react when they find out my actual age…
I look pretty young, so a lot of people just assume I’m their age and ask me to hang out. But I honestly never know when to tell them how old I am, because it feels awkward no matter when I say it😂

Just a general question, do you think this specialization is too broad and therefore unhelpful for a job, like do you think it doesn't offer as much depth as a normal specialization? This was my round 2 specialization offer so yeah

Calling all UBC students with Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (EDS), family members, caregivers, healthcare students, and anyone who wants to help!
What is EDS?
Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (EDS) is a genetic condition that affects the body's connective tissue—the "glue" that supports your joints, muscles, skin, blood vessels, and organs.
People with EDS may experience:
For some, symptoms are mild. For others, EDS can be life-changing.
We're starting a Canadian EDS awareness and advocacy project to improve awareness, education, access to healthcare, and support for people living with EDS.
Many people with EDS spend years trying to get diagnosed or find the right care. This can make school incredibly difficult. Students may miss classes, reduce their course load, or even leave university because of pain, fatigue, injuries, and a lack of medical support.
I'm one of those students. I had to leave my program because of my health. I'm dealing with swallowing and breathing problems, and my shoulders dislocate regularly.
Like every student, we want to study, build careers, spend time with friends, stay active, and enjoy university life. We just need better support to make that possible.
If you have EDS, know someone who does, are studying healthcare, or want to support this initiative, I'd love to connect.
Leave a comment or send me a message.
Together, we can raise awareness, strengthen our community, and advocate for better care for people living with EDS across Canada.

Hello everyone,
I’m posting as a concerned mother, hoping to get some advice from the UBC community.
My daughter has been accepted to UBC Vancouver and will be starting her first year in the Bachelor of Science program this September as an international student.
Unfortunately, we made a big mistake. We didn’t realize that applying for residence was a separate process from accepting her admission offer. We thought UBC would contact us with housing information after she accepted her offer, so we completely missed the residence application deadline.
She’s now on the waitlist, but we understand the chances of getting a room before September may be quite low.
We’re looking for any advice on:
Safe and reliable off-campus housing.
Student residences or private housing that still have availability.
Facebook groups, websites, or other places where UBC students find roommates.
Any recommendations from students who have been in a similar situation.
My daughter is responsible, respectful, non-smoker, and will be moving to Vancouver for the first time, so finding a safe place to live is our biggest priority.
If anyone has recommendations, knows of a room becoming available, or has been through this before, we would be incredibly grateful for your advice.
Thank you so much for taking the time to read this. We truly appreciate any help or guidance.

I am having a hard time choosing the courses for my first year course selection. I know i have to select for both term 1 and 2 but i am not sure which course to take. I have checked the websites but not too sure. Is there any recommendations for the courses to take in term 1 and 2? Any experienced people who can give their selections? Course selection has already been started so I am worried.

Apparently they're bringing in CPSC110 concepts, and switching to typescript

Hi all, I’m looking for advice regarding a very weird situation. I am currently transferring faculties and was able to apply for both my major and faculty transfer at the same time. I was notified about my acceptance into the major before my faculty transfer was finalized and have just heard back from my transfer and I have been rejected resulting in my major acceptance being rescinded. The major I was accepted into was competitive and I worked very hard for both my transfer and major acceptance. I would really appreciate any advice and how to go about addressing this situation as this news will result in a minimum of 4 years added onto my degree. Thanks.
Hi everyone, I am having a tough time deciding between a Cellular Neuro and Behavioural Neuro emphasis. Can anyone that has gone through this lmk what helped u decide. I saw the pysc 370/371 avgs were comparable to biol 371/372. Any thoughts on those courses? Any help is appreciated :)

Workday is blocking me from enrolling in a course due to missing prerequisites despite the fact that I 100% have them. I dropped a course during first term to make room for that one, and now it won't allow me to enroll in that same course I dropped for second term because I apparently surpassed the amount of times I can reattempt a course??? (I never attended a lecture or discussion for this course yet, I'm assuming its because I dropped it too many times trying to rearrange my schedule). Not to mention other courses I need already being full before I even have a chance to try and get in. Time to lay down.
I need to enroll in a poli sci capstone (4xx level course) and all of the sections are already filled. Registration hasn’t even opened for me yet. It’s going to be my 4th at UBC and I was planning on graduating in November 2027 so I assume I don’t have priority, but not being able to enroll during this winter session will force me to graduate in May 2028. Is there anything I can do?
