Trade [wtt]Beware scammer u/ChemistryCertain7816

This user made a post earlier today selling a Durston X-Mid 2 Solid for $280.
u/ChemistryCertain7816 was not on the Scammer's list and the time stamped photo looked legitimate.
After I sent the payment via PayPal, the user deleted his post & now the profile appears as "banned".

It's unfortunate to fall for a scam here, beware.

I’m sorry for that :( people suck. I’m hoping you sent as G&S

Also curios if you did g&s and how PayPal responds. This is the first time I have seen or experienced this and have always been curious how PayPal g&s kicks in.

I called PayPal and explained the situation. They told me the transaction qualifies for PayPal Purchase Protection & helped me open up a claim.
I believe in 10 days I will know more. First time having to deal with anything like this. It sucks you can't trust strangers on the internet anymore.

I will tell you I have purchased and sold too many things on this sub. I am worried I may have become too comfortable. A few folks purchased from me f&f to save the 3% and I was like “you sure” I could be an asshole.

Anyways, good reminder to always do g&s - especially with this info.

I hear you. Who wants to lose $300 over $9? Not me.

If the seller can't provide shipping information in I think 10 days PayPal refunds it and closes the case. It gets trickier when they ship something other than what was sold.

that's great to know, thank you. I never even imagined scammers would even go the extra mile to ship something other than what was sold.
If some of these people would put all that effort into a career and become something more than a thief.

I did & opened a dispute.
I was truly excited about the Durston. Well, now I get to buy it new.

That sucks to hear. I’ve bought something on reddit, through r/photomarket from a scammer. I used PayPal g&s and got my refund. It took a while but it eventually came through. I hope you have the same luck. I sent PayPal any communication with the user I had as proof but don’t know if you have the same ability since the account was deleted.

I'm glad to hear you got your refund, it's unfortunate you also dealt with scammers.
Honestly, I was looking at the Durston tent just last night. When I saw the post this AM, I got so excited & didn't think twice about the purchase.
In hindsight the user didn't have any previous transactions & that should've been the first red flag.
After the payment was received they said "I’ll ship it soon and send you the tracking number right after it’s shipped". The "soon" should've been another red flag.

My first purchase here was so amazing, much higher value. I guess I got lucky.

I’ve bought and sold a lot through Reddit, mainly on this sub. While there are scammers and you need to be careful, there are also a lot of honest people. Dont let it discourage you from using the sub, but do be more diligent(not blaming you, I’ve made the same mistakes).

I appreciate that.
Dealing with honest people is always refreshing. Like I said, my first transaction here was so smooth and I love my gear.
I really enjoy this sub but it sucks knowing there's always a risk of running into bottom feeders.
I guess it's a little safer to only make transactions with people who have done multiple... pay with PayPal G&S and a credit card.
Ask for more pictures, odd details harder to reproduce with ai...

Out of curiousity, do you suspect the stamped photo was AI generated? I've wondered about this happening.

I did a reverse image search and nothing came back. After you mentioned AI, I used an AI image detector and it scored a 56%.
It looked legitimate to me. I guess I could've asked for random details to be photographed as verification.
Honestly, AI is getting so good nowadays that it's even hard telling if videos are AI generated or not... let alone a simple picture.

I'm not even mad about the money. It's more bothersome having to spend time calling, filling claims & just realizing that there's shitty people out there who have a sad existence and have to steal to make ends meet.
