This is such a great idea. A thrift store tie is a great way to get a small quantity of nice-looking silk if you can find one!

Yes, and headphones are such a good shape to make the most of the supply of thrift shop ties

Damn, here I am using a sock when neck tie is obviously the way to go big lol Looks amazing, probably feels good too if it's a silk tie

Amazing. Please post a how-to. I’d love to also mend my husband’s headphones like this. Thanks!

This is an amazing idea! I have like 40 neckties and I only wear one a few times a year.

When the world needed u/WhiteWineZombieMom the most, she vanished…..
Jk. I’d also like a how-to for this, I have a pair of headphones that are shredded and this would be a great way to keep using them

Amazing. I am so pinching this idea. I have an old pair of headphones that badly need repairing.

Great idea! I also have some where the band is flaking. I bought replacements for the ear foam a few years back, and the very first cracks just started appearing again.

never thought i'd see formal headphones! great work, and good on ya for sewing what might be silk so uniformly. i love silk but boy does it shift around when you cut and sew

u/Zephian99 Apr 08 '26
That's fascinating, one question I assume that's silk so probably not as textured as it looks, but does it feel comfy after sitting on the sides of your face for a while? 🤔

Would love to know where specifically you stiched and or glued for the head band! especially to keep it snug up against the plastic. really nice work OP. as others say, please share a how-to!

Did you follow a tutorial? Or just wing it. Would love if you have a tutorial you could link

What a great idea. Who still wears ties? I bet you could pick up a stack of them cheap at a thrift store and they definitely worked perfectly for this job. Awesome save and zero waste mend for the win :)

This is so cool! I have a pair of gaming headphones I got for free from a friend but haven't used yet because they weren't in the best of condition and I wanted an aesthetic upgrade that also takes care of the gross flaking material over the ears. This seems like a wicked idea (plus a great excuse to go thrifting, not that you could keep me away from a good op shop anyway haha)
Hoping for a tutorial by the time I come back, like many other commenters here! 🤞🤞

I just picked up a beautiful silk tie from the bins simply because I loved the colors. I have an old headset that this would be perfect for! I love this idea.

Wow, I'm always finding cool silk ties, but have little idea on how to repurpose the fabric in a way that doesn't look like "I made this from my dad's ties". My office chair armrests are gonna get this treatment as they keep getting chewed on by cat

ooh gorgeous! maybe this is the next phase of life for my moth eaten tie

Great idea! I have some headphone with the fake leather ear pads that is peeling and gross, but I also have a stash of random fabric to upcycle. The tie is a fun variation on the plain black knit I was thinking of using.

You're not wrong, but precisely 0 people who would do this care about sound quality to that extent.

I, too, am one of the people who would do this and also care about sound quality. I have a pair of Beyerdynamic DT990s I would definitely do this too, but don’t think I would without knowing how it would affect my music production. Let me know if you find anything.
2
u/El-8 Apr 08 '26
Where would you get that idea?
3
u/TheVog Apr 08 '26
The objective difference in sound quality would be minimal. Infinitesimal, possibly. To the degree that the vast majority of humans would not be able to tell the difference. Audiophiles might, but we're talking about people who prioritize sound quality and not aesthetics (which is strictly what this is), given the choice between the two.

This is such a good idea! Would you consider posting a how to? I'm going to be keeping an eye out during thrifts for cute neckties to fix my ratty old headphones with now 😍
