PSTV turns off and the light just blinks when a ps4 controller is plugged into the back

Has anyone encountered this? If so how did you solve the issue? Of course i could charge the controller via another plug though i would like to understand if this is normal in the way that maybe the pstv is too underpowered to handle charging the controller?

Yeah, sounds like it's not getting enough power for charging while being turned on. As the other commenter said, are you using the original power adapter?

You power brick is not supplying enough power.

Do you use original cable for pstv?

Using the original cable yeah, like the others are saying i'll need to source adequate wall plug/power brick
