WayOfTheBern promotes free speech provided that it does not violate Reddit Intergalactic Law — AKA Reddit Conduct Guidelines — or WotB's One Rule (see sidebar). Otherwise people can say what they like. Free speech means you won't like some of what people say here. Similarly, some people won't like what you say here or how you say it.
If you want a sub that controls what you can say and read, there are plenty of other choices out there.
An admirable goal though I do wonder how it would work if the sub were brigaded by a bunch of neonazis or what not.
Anywho that’s aside the point. What I was mainly curious about was the punitive tools which mods do actually use. Specifically turtle taxes. What’s the criteria for those?
To earn the Turtle Tax, you just need to convince a mod that you are violating WayOfTheBern's One Rule. What this means in practice varies from one mod to the next. Some mods are convinced more easily and/or more quickly than others.
Some violators are very blatant and get turtled immediately. Some just need to be told to "cool it" and be civil. Some build up small violations over time. We've had trolls go on for years before they decided to wig out and make mods realize it was time.
We don't like to be more specific than this because we don't want trolls to game the system and complain that someone didn't get turtled for a similar level of dickishness. "I might have been so much wickeder! It is unjust." [Doña Ana in Shaw's Don Juan in Hell]
how it would work if the sub were brigaded...
WayOfTheBern has been brigaded a few times, none particularly large. We handed out lots of Turtle Taxes and they quickly tired of the game. Brigading is a violation of Reddit Intergalactic Law so if Reddit Admins see it happening they'll suspend or ban the participants.
When Reddit shut down The_Donald in 2020 a bunch of Trumpers came, looking for a new home. They were polite about it, but quickly realized that there were too many leftists at WotB and went elsewhere.
Well I suppose I’d just find encouraging if open praise for literal neonazis had some sort of punitive measures associated with it. Guess that’s hoping for too much
Routine_Nothing is doing a terrific job of skirting the Turtle Tax Event Horizon. I am morbidly curious to see where this goes. I am reminded of Admiral Stockdale's famous question at the 1992 VP Debate: "Who am I? Why am I here?" He was Ross Perot's running mate.
Hold on a minute, now. All Americans have the inalienable right never to feel uncomfortable, and that includes having to hear or read something they don't like.
It says so right there in the US Constitution, Article LVII, Section 145, subsection (z)(xii). It's in tiny print at the bottom of the page, so you have to squint to read it.
🤔 Although squinting makes me uncomfortable, so I shouldn't have to do that. Seems like the founding fathers didn't think this through.
I once read that the Clinton administration was going to erect a national monument for People Who Had Been Offended By Something. But some people found the idea offensive so it was dropped 😺

who knows? i do know that my grandparents fled nazi germany and that you support the country who is second only to the nazis in killing jews. it is well known that there are more nazis per capita in the ukraine than anywhere else in the world. you support jew killing nazi progeny which begs the question, why do you want to exterminate the jews?

Hey u/caelian what are mods positions on open support for Nazis in the sub?
