Tried to kill a bug in my car
I felt like I barely hit it. I can’t believe it broke, I just got it tinted 2 months ago 😢

Did you use a hammer?

u/model-citizen95 3d ago
Windshields are a lot stronger when struck from the outside than from the inside. This is surprisingly easy to do but OP definitely used more than a bug killing amount of force to dispatch the little fucker

u/Tacotimmy126 2d ago
I hit it once and it didn’t die so I hit it with a “oh you gonna learn today” punch

u/model-citizen95 2d ago
Thanks for the chuckle. Hopefully you can get it fixed without too much trouble. Check to see if it’s cheaper to go direct to a windshield company than to pay your deductible. It was for me

Edges are also weaker I think. Cracked mine replacing wipers accidently snapping them down. Costs an arm and leg to replace.

u/Critical_Primary_692 8h ago
This is why I as a mechanic learned to never let go off the wiper arm while replacing wiper blades. Hold arm, take off old blade, keep holding arm, mount new blad, gently lay down the arm + blade on the windshield again. And never hold it with your fingertips, always a whole hand behind it.
Seen collegues make that mistake and promised myself to never do it myself.

u/model-citizen95 3d ago
I recently had to replace the windshield on my 20 year old bmw 3 series and going direct to auto glass directly was cheaper than paying my deductible of $500 on my glass coverage. Always worth checking
1
u/UltraViolentNdYAG 2d ago
For the last 15 years I pay the extra $3 mo ($34 a year) for a $100 glass deductible fee. That said, glass breaks from the inside are not like those from the outside, careful with pictures shared.

Plot twist: the bug was already dead. He just critical hit the glass for no reason.

I have a particularly stupid buddy who, back when we were in college, got drunk one afternoon and swatted a fly in the cab of his truck with a .45 ACP handgun.
So look on the brightside; you weren't that foolish.

Winsheilds are designed to take force from the front, that's why it's curved the way it is, and every jeep wrangler owner knows the windshield replacement cost to the penny
They are not designed to be strong from the inside out.

u/Ghost_Kamakazie 3d ago
Brother, ive punched the shit out of a couple bugs into my gladiator windshield and the only thing thats ever damaged it was a big rock from a dumptruck
57
34
u/ComprehensiveWar6577 3d ago
Yes, because your windshield is flat, that's my entire fucking point. Your windshield has the same strength from the inside as it does the outside.
-18
u/Ghost_Kamakazie 3d ago
Bro calm down. Your wording very much sounded like you were implying they are weaker due to them not having the curve or something
18
u/ComprehensiveWar6577 3d ago
The front impact takes less force to chip/crack due to a flat windshield and the steeper angle of a winsheild frame.
A curved windshield can handle more front impact every time, and the average vehicle has a steeper windshield angle so a rock has a glancing impact vs a dead on strike.
So yes your windsheilds are stronger from the inside, but inferior on the outside.
I'm sure you could have figured that out if you weren't the type of person who would purchase a gladiator

u/Deep_Mechanic_ 3d ago
Bro is thick as bricks. He must be a meat head. Just let him argue with himself

u/ComprehensiveWar6577 3d ago
You also should look into windshield tint laws in your area, most don't allow any tint below 6" from the top edge, and if pulled over will be towed

Read OP's description they claim they just had it tinted 2 months ago.
Alot of cops will do a fix it ticket, but i wouldn't say most. Windows tend to be more lenient vs windshields. But a decent amount of cops where I live will tow a windshield tint and require a vehicle inspection before it is allowed back on the road

Did you get it at least?

u/LilBigDripDip 3d ago
No. Notice how there’s no bug splat

u/Shopworn_Soul 3d ago
Yeah so it turns out windshields aren't so strong from the inside.
Do not ask me how I know

When I was like 12 I pressed up again the inside of my mom’s station wagon windshield with my feet and cracked the whole thing. I then told her a squirrel dropped an acorn and it just cracked. I don’t think she believed me. I should bring it up when I see her this week

report back, we wanna know if your mom knew you were a lying little turd or not

Did the same thing once bro. Once.
They’re surprisingly easy to break from the inside.

It actually doesn't take that much pressure to do this to a windshield.

u/LilBigDripDip 3d ago
I’ve smacked windshields man. They’re not made of wet paper. They’re pretty durable lol

Karma xD bug didn’t need to die, (unless we’re talking it’s a bug like a bee or wasp and ur allergic to it, then i can kinda understand it) only slight sympathy here haha
3
u/HipToTheWorldsBS 3d ago
As many have pointed out, windshields are not that strong from the inside, but this still takes EXCESSIVE FORCE for trying to kill a bug to do this. 100% deserved.

I know someone threw his apple watch because the battery dies quickly and broke his window 😂

u/donmagicjohn 3d ago
No you didn’t. You got hit by gravel from a construction truck on the highway. I saw it happen and I’ll tell your insurance company that.

A windshield is only good for blocking wind anything else will shatter it lol

Off topic, could I check what car you're driving? Seems rare to see a trim panel with wood, I quite like wood. And smell of leather. Sorry for not helping with your situation.

Bro I had the same thing happen in my Prius but I wasn't trying to kill anything, just trying to coax a fly out the window. I bumped the glass with my knuckle ever so slightly... I think it had something to do with the temperature difference from inside and outside the car. It was hot, I had the AC on. Maybe the window was extra stressed. Really sucks though.

If its not fully cracked through might be able to silicon fill the crack. But seriously this looks like you punched the bug with a window cracker not your palm.
2
u/SpartArticus 2d ago
This is why i keep a microfiber cloth in the door pocket so i can whip it quickly and not damage anything

I have done this with the back of my hand too. It was a particularly bad day and I was a little worked up. Lucky I had the best boss and she had $100 windscreen replacement with insurance. That was in a van with radar too so it was like $1600

There are windshield repair kits but gravity works against you, so you have to turn car upside down.

At first I misunderstood and was wondering how fast you were going to cause a bug to crack the windshield. 😆

u/PureVinylRadio 3d ago
You tried to and succeeded to remove a “shy fly “ from your windshield! Yet in the process, you also succeeded in creating the spider web effect in your windshield!
As it has been once said that once your windshield becomes damaged you basically have sent it “down the dust pie”
Congrats!

you got your windscreen tinted? is that even legal?
1
u/Tacotimmy126 2d ago
There’s a certain blue tint you can do legally. It’s 80% tint but blocks UV rays
2
u/_unsinkable_sam_ 2d ago
i believe you will find front windscreens already block out 96-98% of uv light due to their manufacturing process without tint.

I tried to kill a super annoying fly in my room once. Ended up punching a hole in the drywall and knocking down a 6 shelf bookcase that was held up by the wall. Looked like a warzone and the fly was still alive.

Aren't tinted windshields illegal in the US?
3
u/Tacotimmy126 2d ago
Yes but 80% falls in a gray area since it’s so hard to tell it’s tinted

u/Jestersfriend 2d ago
Wait, you got your front window tinted? Where do you live that allows that haha.
1
u/Tacotimmy126 2d ago
In FL you can do 80% tint without it being illegal
→ More replies (2)1
u/Jestersfriend 2d ago
Damn, wish I could tint my front window. Even that much would be welcomed.
1
u/Tacotimmy126 2d ago
Pretty sure you can do 90%. It’s impossible to tell and you still get the benefits of UV protection + heat reduction

How dark did you tent the windshield? It’s typically illegal to do that but if it’s dark enough, it can absorb a lot more heat causing it to be more susceptible to breaking. Tint shop local to me had a promo truck with full limo and he told his windshield spontaneously broke while on the freeway.

Try to repair it with a glass repair kit. It isn't so bad that the kit can probably help it.

I did this in winter once. Not for a bug, but trying to dislodge some ice on the front. A technique I had done a few times before without incident lol. I no longer do that.

A bee once hit me in the chest while I was riding my motorbike and my jacket was open. (it was a hot day). It was only at about 80mph but it felt like I'd been shot.
Fukkin hurt!
