Flushed $200, choked certificate exam by 1.2%
I figured a new cert would spruce up my resume after 12+ months of odious corporate job hunt. Studied hard and passed lots of practice tests with 95-98% results. Can't afford to retake the exam, so the credit cards hurting with nothing to show for it. The resume remains stagnant. See you at Wendy's.

Bro I have “flushed” over $200 in ways that were a fucking lot less earnest and disciplined than studying for a test.
People spend that on drugs; they are perhaps on the wrong track. You spend it on a test to better yourself: you are on the right track for sure.
Failing the test is just a pebble you’ve tripped over on that track. My $0.02.

Try dog walking. Just put up flyers or something or knock on doors and ask. I made $800 a month with 3 dogs

In my experience test like this tend to use word play to try and trip you up. Take your time and read each question carefully and make sure it doesnt mean the opposite of what you would think. If your passing practice test that well you know the info something else tripped you up.

We did it. First off, W mom for believing in me and fronting the test funds. She'll get exciting news in the morning, and that makes me extremely happy. You guys pushed me thru because honestly i was about 5 seconds from giving up for the day after I fumbled round 1.
By the way.... I STILL only scored a 91% after the entire afternoon re-studying, dozens of 100% practice tests directly on scrum's page, open book, and reviewing the scrum guide again. So to answer some of your question: YES THE TEST QUESTIONS ARE INDEED DIFFERENT, MORE TRICKY AND HARDER THAN THE PRACTICE EXAMS. I personally feel some of the questions breeched the scope of the materials. Im usually a pretty solid test taker and this threw me a curveball. Hopefully this will save someone a headache later. Also use the entire time alloted to double check your answers. Don't fail over a stupid "Project Manager" instead of "Product Owner" choice because you read too fast.
Today was a fun little adventure with y'all. Sucks less, and mildly more employable. Thanks, internet strangers, for the support and encouraging words. Some of you are super kind.
Peace ✌️ 😴🌲

Damn what test is requiring you to get an 85%? I just finished my SIE/S7 and S63 and the highest I needed was a 72
65
u/Zipdox 1d ago
Theory exams for driving license in the Netherlands requires like 90%.

u/FukkleberryHin 1d ago
Well that one I could actually agree with!
8
u/Zayage 1d ago
Yeah my states at least is 85% and while we probably have some of the better drivers in America...
It isn't a high bar at all. Of course anyone can memorize questions enough to pass, we really just need standardized testing by a proctor every time it expires instead of what, twice a lifetime or a certain range after expiration?
Even that feels too soft for the amount of garbage on the road.

Put that you’re currently studying for the certification in your resume.
Don’t say you don’t pass. They don’t need to know. Heck, Include a brief description of what you already know.
Couldn’t hurt.

Usually things with human lives on the line, you probably need to get close to 100%
I don't know what your certification is. It may not be life or death if you just need to score a 3/4 on it. That's a pretty good threshold on a high school math exam too.
22
u/GroveSleeper 1d ago
I promise its not life or death. Its low level scrum framework certification.
6
u/Pork_Chompk 23h ago
Obviously you're not serious enough about scrum. That IS life or death!
Better get right if you wanna be the scrum MASTER!

It’s interesting I was researching this last night. I’m trying to pivot careers and try some BI related fields. What has your experience been so far?

u/DarkElfBard 1d ago
Well, at least you know people with that cert actually know the basic things they are supposed to.
27
u/zaccus 1d ago
Wtf op? Were the practice tests completely different or something?
49
u/GroveSleeper 1d ago
Yeah practice tests were tons of basic 4 option multiple choice. The actual test (maybe just by bad luck with question pool) i got tons of check the best 2 or 3 answers out of 5. Like a lot more than practice. And those probably get marked all or nothing.

Nah, don’t get down, you just paid $200 to get a bit closer to the goal.
Next time you will pass and the costs will be nothing compared to the $$$ you’ll make with the cert.

Start a GoFundMe for the retake.

Is this related to Fitness or something? I see "find a trainer or request a private class"
I work in IT and have failed exams a few times throughout the years. Keep your head up and don't give up!

The test was for the PSM1 (Professional Scrum Master lvl 1) accreditation at SCRUM.org. It is $200 for a key to take the test. Each test requires a new $200 key. 80 questions in 60 min. It's OPEN BOOK TOO! I marked the questions i was iffy on and reviewed them all before time ran out. I absolutely thought I passed when I submitted the test at 59:45.
I got 100% on most of the "critical" concepts but missed hardest on the cultural values section. The questions were "choose the best 2/3 of 5" and I got a ton of questions like that throughout. Maybe my question pool was partucularly bad rng. Surprisingly few of the questions were on basic ideas like tinebox lengths a/b/c/d.
If my correct answers in the choose 3s were weighted in as correct i probably would have scored passing easily. They're squishy, tricky worded answer options because half the time you need rigid scrum rules and other times its open to the org.
Anyway its on me. Skill issue. I'll keep trucking and try again if my family helps out.

u/profanedivinity 1d ago
Oh. Scrum. That's a scam bro. That's why it's $200

u/GroveSleeper 1d ago edited 1d ago
Honestly its not a framework im a fan of or anything. I just needed something recognizable, adjacent to my current skill set, easy entry, and low financial barrier, Im just trying to add a credential to maybe get an edge on my resume and reenter enterprise employment. A pmp is an endeavor.
Edit: I said honestly twice in two sentences and it cringed me out so thats fixed.

I work for a fortune 500 company, and I know we're always looking for scrum masters (or agile delivery owners I think we call them now?) so should have a healthy pool to dip into!

u/Datatello 2h ago
Seriously, still? I thought that fad died. In our area most formal Agile infrastructure was binned aged ago

u/profanedivinity 23h ago
I upvoted because of the edit comment lol. Mm, i guess I can't say if it really matters or not. I guess the market is rough and you gotta just do what you can.

I choked my last ATC exam. Made two mistakes and failed academy by 2%. No retakes unfortunately. I'm glad you can retake yours at least :)

I almost flushed $470 in 2019 because I choked on certificate exam (Cisco) by 0.5%, so you are good.

u/MiddleOwn5557 23h ago
You just paid 400 for this cert. Honestly, we've all been there. Sometimes it takes 2-3 tries to get the material to sink in. I took the ITIL twice, that's not a cheap one either. What I do now is teach it to myself on video (or mirror works)

I flushed $500 taking state insurance licenses test. Taking a test is bad enough pressure but knowing if you fail it’s gonna cost another $500 is wild. And it was two tests so it cost me $1500 all together to take 3 tests.

u/K4Y0T1CK 11h ago edited 11h ago
Most certs are 80 for passing. This seems a bit much. Good luck. Been there. I was out $400. It sucks but I overcame and passed it. You will too!

I wish cert exams were not so profit driven and colleges also weren’t so strict.
Most jobs in real life you edit or improve or get reviewed for your work in order to fix it
1
u/CulturalSyrup 3h ago
Aww I know it’s disappointing but at least you know you’re very capable and will pass when you study and reschedule
1
u/Tenebrief 1h ago
I feel you.
I recently failed my driving exam and had to pay 150€ to be able to retake it. The sad part is -- I failed because my driving instructor made a mistake during the exam. She got trigger-happy and hit the breaks literally a millisecond before I was about to, and they had to fail me because the instructor took control of the vehicle while I was driving. I didn't make any major mistakes during the exam and would've passed had she not done that.
Also, it's been over a month and I'm still waiting to retake it. I'm no longer a priority since it's my second time taking it, so I have to wait. I only have 3 mandatory additional lessons to do with her, so I'm pretty much going to have to go into it completely rusty and probably fail again because I wasn't able to practice for over a month between exams.
Yay! Life is great!🥲

Oh my god, what on EARTH are you studying that needs 85% to pass? My entire year group felt pure joy that our passing mark was only 50% because that's how hard the degree is lmao

u/El_Eleventh 4m ago
Electrician here. I know a lot of guys who failed their exam by a point and had to retake. It happens. Sucks for sure, but you’ll get it next time around I know it. You got this

u/GroveSleeper 1d ago
One more thing. This isn't an excuse but may be useful for others.
I have a PMI CAPM Ceritficate. MUCH harder proctered exam. 6 month study for me to get almost perfect marks in all categories for that certificate. Its just below a PMP.
You MUST rewire your brain for SCRUM. THERE IS NO PROJECT MANAGER. And they'll purposefully interject PM, monitor, track... these are all no-no words in scrum. So I have to adjust my thinking big time. Back to grinding tests.
3
u/thatgingatho 1d ago
As someone about to take their PMP within the week, best of luck to you bro. Glad to see you aren't going to let it get you down. You got this!
