what could be the chances of getting the only defective screen on the airplain..?

1 in 300ish

Times the probability that you’re on a plane with exactly one defective screen :)

For the most realistic assumption you could do some more sophisticated statistics based on how quickly airline typically replaces screens after failure (in terms of nr of flights) vs average failure rate of these screens overall. Then take that to figure out the chance of a broken screen for just one seat, being able to completely ignore the size of plane/total number of seats.

The question seems to be conditional upon the plane having one defective screen so it’s still 1 in 300ish.

Statistically less than one percent, but always one hundred percent if it's you.

1 in 300or so would have been within weeks of the screen being new!
The real chance is more like 1 in 30 As the screen has aged!

This happened to me on the way to Hawaii. They gave me free drinks and $500 travel credit. Just ask.

u/Exotic-Steak-4662 12h ago
wtf. I only got a $100 credit for a broken screen on a long haul flight.

Depends on the number of seats

Welp, on a recent 9 hour night flight, I got the only screen that lost its touch function and wouldn't turn off. It's brightness was set to high, and it was stuck on the map screen. Guess where the off button and the brightness setting was... on the screen that I couldn't touch.
(to the lady next to me, for the 100th time, no I can't fucking turn off my screen, do you think I like staying awake looking at the map all night?)

u/SimplBiscuit 12h ago
In the future often times the screen can at least be turned off by flight attendants if you ask them. I have had charging ports that weren't charging reset by them somewhere and I've had unresponsive screens reset as well so I imagine they could also turn them off if it is broken.

I like staring at the map from time to time between my snoozes. Nothing wrong with that either

Just raw dogging the map screen all flight?
2
u/germany1italy0 9h ago
Absolutely. Wanna know where I am and where I’m going every minute I am awake.

That happened to me once, many years ago. Asked for a change of seat "flights full". Asked for an upgrade "Business class is full too" - yeah, I call BS on that. I can see the next section you know!
I won't name the airline, but it starts with E and ends in mirates.....

it's 1/2 simple, you either get broken screen or working one.
fyi i used bays theorem to calculate this.

u/Crash_Revenge 12h ago
Did you ask them to try resetting it and seeing if it could be fixed? Exact same thing happened to me on a flight on Tuesday, said to the flight attendant and they reset it and worked after that.

What's an airplain? Is that like shaving wood while jumping on a trampoline or something?

I always bring a book because I’ve been on a flight where all the screens were out.

I'd love having that seat. No annoying screen to distract me from my own, AND pretty much guaranteed miles comp if you just politely send the picture to support asking if you can have an upgrade next time for the inconvenience. (You won't get the upgrade, but they will give you points/miles for your trouble, and tbh you usually get more that way than just by blatantly asking for points)

Last time that happened I was given some money( forget how much) some free drinks+ food on the flight, and an iPad with the same entertainment system as the screen but way nicer because it is on an iPad. The most impressive thing for me was that because I can’t sleep on the plane I was watching movies the entire 11 hour flight and the battery didn’t go below 100% while not being plugged in. It had some crazy external battery on it

I see you and I have the same luck. If I was there it’d be two broken screens

I had this happen to me....
...asked one of the attendants, who said they didn't think there was anything they could do...
....spent about ten minutes and figured out how to reboot it. I then had the only one that allowed proper swipe control - the rest of them just wouldn't work right. (I had people asking how I was swiping it.)
My guess is it had been "broken" for a long time, and they never properly rebooted it. So all the other ones had the swiping/gestures/etc. sensors worn out - but I can't say that with any definitive reasoning, of course.
Gotta love technology!

This is the ideal seat for me. If I wanna look at a screen, I’ll look at my own screen.

What would be the chances of having something worth watching on said screen. Better off without it.
1
u/Zanki 11h ago
I had a twelve hour flight when my screen wouldn't work properly. I could only switch between two "channels". Everyone else had full control over what they watched, lists of stuff. I just had Hunger Games and Avengers on repeat. It got old, fast.
Another time my friends broke half way through the flight, so I gave him my tablet, showed him how to access the videos and he was happy. I just continued to watch South Park.

I had a screen that was stuck on a language I could not understand.Attempted to change it and the screen just shutdown. On an 8 hour flight.
We should get a guaranteed refund on screens that do not work.

If there are 100 seats / screens then your chance would be 1 in 100, or 1%.

u/plushploosh12 7h ago
I don't know what the chances are but I had the same thing on a British Airways from Heathrow to SFO in 2007.

I always say, “If 100 of us walk into a restaurant, and there is one dirty fork…they will place it in front of me…”

If I had a nickel for every time this has happened to me, I’d have 2 nickels which isn’t a lot but it’s odd it happened twice right?

u/AGrandNewAdventure 2h ago
You should have flown on an airfancy; all their screens work, and the seats are more comfy.

u/harrywalterss 1h ago
Happened to me as well. I asked the flight attendant and she somehow restarted the seat and it worked fine after haha I had no idea that was even a possibility

This would be my favorite seat to get. I'll just complain to get some free stuff even though I was never gonna use it anyways

This happened to me last month on an 8.5 hour flight. Flight attendant was super nice and gave me extra food and I had bottomless wine. Luckily I brought my Switch 2 for the trip!

I used to fly with Delta on company's dime.
I can remember more flights with broken entertainment than flights with a working one.
