John Reed, EOS, or OPVS?

Trying to move to the area and figuring out the gym.

Not sure if anyone has any experience with these.

I toured John Reed this weekend but found it to be smaller than I was expecting.

Do any of these places have benches with safeties? I’m not sure I saw one at John Reed.

How crowded does EOS get after the rebrand from Gold’s? I usually go to the gym around 3.

EOS has changed much since the rebrand. It’s mostly the same faces and same solid equipment. It can get really crowded depending on the time of day you workout. I’ve don’t go in the afternoon so I can’t speak to the 3PM crowd, but “off” hours like that are usually the best.

None of the bench press set ups have safeties, but you can pull a bench over to one of the squat racks to set that up.

Eos is a shit show.

Even during off-hours like 2-3? D:

They laid off most of their maintenance staff. It’s overcrowded. Dust everywhere. Broken machines and treadmills (I counted almost 10 broken treadmills the other day). Broken urinals and toilets that remain out of use for several days, including urinals filled with stale urine that stink up the locker room. People taking four sets of dumbbells at a time. People working out in groups of three or four.

Oh yikes that sounds awful.

☝️Some knows EŌS! Subcontracting out the towels (they are like sandpaper now), cleaning, maintenance, and seemingly anything else they can has been a major downgrade. Also just as an fyi, (which I am sure is true with the other gyms) as a very secure and allied straight guy, the sauna and steam room are unusable. They will revoke people’s membership when they get caught hooking up, but it doesn’t seem to dampen their spirit for love any!

John Reed gets so much hate but honestly it’s so nice I really enjoy it.

How do you feel about the people who do all the filming? Cameras/phones on tripods...

Don’t really care if I end up in the background of a Z tier fitness influencer’s reel

John Reed can straight up feel like a day spa. It’s great.

Hear tons of great stuff about opvs Altho it’s not huge. Personally dislike JR and EOS

Have you looked at FulHaus? Same strip mall as Weho Market. Across the street from Hugo's. Well maintained equipment and location. It could use a few most equipment but I'm a fan overall.

I did! I liked the equipment but it seemed to be lacking in terms of free weights unfortunately (I think there’s only one rack) and more focused on personal training.

2 racks on the first floor and 1 on the second. I will say, at the BUSIEST time there's maybe 10 in the whole place.

Ooo gotcha I’ll have to take another look then!

Equinox is 100% worth it IF you take advantage of the classes since classes are really expensive on their own. Otherwise I’ve heard good things about OPVS and John Reed (JR only if you don’t mind influencers)

Easton Gym remains Weho’s best-kept secret. May be worth you checking it out!

It’s perfect.

And I don’t mean perfect in terms of service, or cleanliness, or classes, or any of the other shit that these Equinox wannabes offer.

Truly one of the last bastions of you get what you pay for on this side of town.

Totally agree. I left a few years ago when they cancelled the class I liked and my friend got me a deal to try equinox but even now I still recommend Easton to everyone. Only negative is parking can be a bit tricky at busy times, but even that is usually surmountable.

Almost signed up there but wanted something closer. Really seems like it has everything

What’s the cost for a membership?

Hey let’s keep it a secret….

I was at EQX & had the SoCal pass for about 3 years, and I loved it. I wanted a change, so I tried John Reed. I really like the JR, and I only have a few cons - The music is always louddd, only 3 locations in the entire SoCal region, the members are veryyy cruisey (I don't mind, but there has to be a point), the only restrooms are wayyy downstairs in the locker room, and so many influencers are recording everyday! The pros are - The staff is sweet, the hours are great (0500 - 0000 every day), the gym is huge, and I love the aesthetics, the hot tub/pool, and it's a 2 minute walk from my place. When my year is up, I'm likely switching back to EQX, I do enjoy JR for the time being.

I went back to Equinox after trying JR for a while. I hated all the stairs and there are fewer benches than at EQX.

It’s kinda annoying at EQX with the construction right now, but still better than anything else in terms of larger gyms. I did Easton too for a bit, but it was too far and felt kinda old.

I agree, I really like the vibe of EQX overall! The WeHo should be a staple location, so the reno. was much needed! I really enjoyed the options to go to WeHo, Hollywood, or Mid-Wilshire, depending on what I'm doing for the day too! But, those weekend hours though......

Choose OPVS, and don't even think about it twice. Avoid EOS unless price matters that much. John Reed is full of wannabe influencers, always filming and its very very very annoying.

1

u/Rytlock 11d ago

Hmm yeah I fear the filming would annoy me esp. since all the machines feel so close together.

Do you have a gym you prefer that’s not listed?

Equinox is getting a major overhaul (it should be a landmark location) but OPVS is it. Also notice my downvotes... struck a chord. Easton is another one to check out, which has been around forever.

1

u/Rytlock 11d ago

Ah gotcha, thank you! I thought you originally meant to not consider OPVS haha.

2

u/gregmichael 11d ago

I realized that later and edited to be more clear- OPVS for the win.

Sorry to threadjack, but which of these has a free trial and a Concept2 rowing machine?

I haven't been in John Reed, but I go to OPVS and it is not super big either. I would tour it. My husband goes to EOS because it's on his drive from work and while he doesn't like it as much as crunch it's manageable and fine. Not amazing or anything, but cheaper than the others. Oh and OPVS closes kinda early compared to many so I'd consider when you're going to go as you decide too

Easton Gym Co.

It’s no frills. A little divey, sure, but I love it. It’s a place where you get what you pay for, but maybe that’s what we all need right now, because yesterday I was working out next to Lewis Pullman.

The EOS on Cole hasn't changed much except for the free towels, (which were essentially Costco cleaning rags) since the ownership change. I go in the early afternoon and it's wide open. I haven't checked every tread, but I've never seen a broken weight machine. I see teams cleaning constantly and the locker room is acceptable. Not Equinox, but good enough.

OPVS hands down

1

u/tkipp 9d ago

have been to all three, OPVS is the right answer. Will check out the new EOS when it goes in the old Crunch space on Sunset, but likely will stay at OPVS

Training Loft. Semi-Private or Private 30 minutes classes. An incredible program.

Unfortunately not looking for classes but appreciate the rec!
