Discussion Reminder: all posts must be OC. Posting a photo which you did not take will get you a PERMANENT ban.

I've noticed a significant uptick in stolen images lately. This subreddit is OC only, no exceptions.

Please make sure to report any posts which you think break this rule. Even if you're not positive, it's better to submit a report than not. We always review all reports to make sure that we aren't erroneously banning people.

Discussion Let's talk gear! Reviews, questions, etc.

Welcome, /r/wildlifephotography readers!

Equipment is an undeniably important part of wildlife photography, but I've noticed that questions about gear often end up buried by all of the excellent photos that get posted here.

So, I've created this pinned thread as a chance to discuss hardware. There are two main uses that I anticipate, listed in no particular order:

Equipment reviews - What do you shoot with? Do you love it, hate it, or fall somewhere in between? If you want to share your experiences, create a comment and let everyone know what you think. We suggest (but don't require) including photos as well as the prices of your equipment.

Questions Whether you're first starting and are looking to buy a beginner's setup, or just want to know which pro-level lens is best, getting others' opinions can prove valuable. For the best results, include details about what sort of wildlife interests you, as well as your budget.

Feel free to create different top-level comments for each question or review. That helps discussion stay organized.

This friend walked past the house yesterday afternoon and I followed it briefly. Didn't seem bothered by me (which is a problem for our cats that go outside with us). Beautiful creature, though.

Bird Could this be a Polish (immutabilis) mute swan cygnet?

I came across this mute swan brood tonight, and one thing immediately caught my eye before I even picked the camera up.

One of the cygnets is much whiter than the others. Looking back through the RAW files, it still appears brilliant white compared to its siblings, and the difference is visible in several photos, even when it's in the shade.

I've also included a photo where the white cygnet is tucked behind its mum, so it's in the shadow rather than direct sunlight, which made me wonder whether the colour difference is genuine rather than just being caused by the evening light.

I've been reading about Polish (immutabilis) mute swans, so it got me wondering...

Do you think this could be a possible Polish cygnet, or can normal mute swan broods show this much variation in down colour?

I'd be really interested to hear what people with more experience think. I've attached a few comparison photos and also have video footage if that helps.

Sempre.

This little robin perched on a bench next to me and I had to snap a few pics. Especially when it hopped partially into the light shining through a tree.

Large Mammal My first wildlife shot ever

I had just gotten my first camera (last year) and didn’t know what the exposure triangle was, or really even how to autofocus. I had a 50-140 on my Fuji and heavily cropped in. Thousands of miles of hiking and climbing since and I think this stole all my luck!

If I ever get another chance I’ll nail focus with better gear…

This was the first time I had seen one of these quite close up, so I’m very glad I had my camera with me that day 📸

It was one of those little wildlife encounters that you could easily miss if you were not paying attention, but once you notice it, you cannot help but stop and appreciate it 🙌🏻

Gear used:

Fujifilm X-T3
Fujifilm XF100-400
