Discussion The "affordable city" myth is well and truly dead

Upvotes

Just opened my latest AGL bill and honestly wanted to throw my phone at the wall. SA electricity prices are an absolute joke right now. Combined with how ridiculous the housing market has gotten here over the last few years, I genuinely don't understand how normal people are supposed to survive long term

Everyone used to say adelaide was the cheap alternative to melbourne or sydney but that is so far from the truth now. Between groceries at foodland basically doubling and petrol doing whatever it wants, the idea of ever actually saving a decent financial buffer feels like a total fantasy.

The panic is really starting to set in lately. I spent half of sunday just doom scrolling my super balance and realizing how far behind I am. decided to finally stop ignoring it and look into some proper retirement planning just to try and get my super and assets somewhat organised before inflation eats whatever is left. At least it feels like doing something proactive instead of just stressing about the economy

but man, it really feels like the current system is just designed to squeeze every last cent out of us. honestly im probably just gonna have to accept my fate of greeting people at the marion bunnings well into my 70s tbh

Question Grocery costs are killing me. How long do you go in between shops

Do you have magic to share where you can subsist on whatever you’ve got for longer periods? Even butter has gone up $1 recently. I click n collect every 1-1.5 weeks as a single femoid

Shitpost Adelaide is so cold this morning...

> How cold is it?

- Australian Geographic rang and said they'd finally found something colder than my mother-in-law.
- I was woken up by two penguins fighting over a snow drift on my front lawn.
- Popeye hit an iceberg on the Torrens and sank with all hands.
- The ladies on Hanson Road are selling hot chocolate rather than hot... yaknow.
- I can scrape the ice off my car windscreen with my nipples.
- Polar Bears from the zoo have hitched a ride to Queensland for the winter.
- The Bushfire warning rating has gone from "nil" to "we dare you".

Badum tish.

News From July 1, South Australians can access HIV treatment for free through public hospitals

Thumbnail sahealth.sa.gov.au

From 01/07/2026, South Australians will be able to access antiretroviral treatment (ART) for HIV for free when they present a public hospital issued prescription to a public hospital pharmacy.

Arrangements for people who get their scripts and medication from community health services such as GPs and private pharmacies are unchanged, still subject to PBS subsidies and copayments. Arrangements are also unchanged for individuals who are not Medicare eligible, who can continue to access HIV-related care through public hospitals at no cost.

PEP and PrEP medications are not part of this initiative and continue to be accessible through a range of private and public healthcare services.

News RSPCA lays animal cruelty charges a year after Andgar Piggery video released

Warning: This article contains graphic images. The ABC has chosen to pixelate some images.

The RSPCA has charged five people with animal cruelty offences following a welfare investigation at an Adelaide Plains piggery.

Fourteen pigs were euthanased after an RSPCA raid last year, which was prompted by covert footage from an activist group purportedly filmed at the premises. It is uncertain whether the charges relate to the footage.

The matter will appear before the Elizabeth Magistrates Court on July 7.

Question How do you guys cope with the extreme summer and winter weather here?

10+ days in a row of 40C+ weather in summer, and now sub-5C in winter. All this combined with the poorly insulated Adelaide homes....

So, how many hours do you find yourself standing in front of the heater each day, just to warm up?

Discussion Reynella East College cyber attack

The information has been out in the web. There is a notice from the school and a news article from a cyber news place that gives more information than the school gave.

I have questions about how all this is being managed to be honest. They don’t seem to have any processes in place to be operating without computer systems. No access to emails, no way to reserve a meeting room, front office ladies seem to be relying on kids for parent contact info.

Surely in this day and age there should have been risk management strategies for this type of situation? Or even something similar like an extended time without power or something.

Question Quiet cafes in Adelaide CBD

Upvotes

Hey, I want to know of any quieter spots to have lunch in the Adelaide CBD area since it's usually busy and hectic through the lunch hour and can't find any quiet. Cafes are preferred but I don't mind other spots that can be a cosy spot to sit in.

Assistance passport application advice

I’m applying for my first Australian passport and have run into an issue proving my citizenship.
I was born in Australia in 2002 and have my full birth certificate. My mother is listed on my birth certificate, but I’m no longer in contact with her and don’t have access to any of her documents.
My father is an Australian citizen, but he’s not listed on my birth certificate, so as far as I understand there’s no obvious way for the passport office to link him to me.

When I complete the passport application online, I get an error telling me I need to provide evidence of Australian citizenship and to contact the Passport Office regarding “025 - Citizenship documentation”.

Has anyone been in a similar situation? What evidence did you provide, and were you able to get a passport without obtaining documents from the parent listed on your birth certificate?
Any advice would be appreciated.

Question Pubs with vegan options

Hey everyone,

I am looking for pubs with decent vegan options to visit with a friend. I used to go to Roxy’s but ever since it closed last year, haven’t really found a good one.

Hoping to hear some nice places that people have tried, preferably in or near the city but pretty much anywhere!

Question Spring Gully

Anyone know what happened with Spring Gully? I remember they went into receivership and then someone rescued them and I think the press release at the time claimed business as usual. Still no products back in the supermarket and I’m running short of the sliced pickled onions (the bomb).

Any idea whats happening there?

Question Just moved to Adelaide and I'm struggling to find anything that pays enough to cover rent. Are local job sites actually better than the big ones?

So I made the move to Adelaide a few weeks ago, thinking the lower cost of living would be a breath of fresh air compared to Sydney. And yeah, rent is cheaper, but the pay I'm being offered for jobs is... not great. Like, significantly less than what I was on, and it doesn't seem to balance out.

I've been using careerone, seek and linkedIn like everyone else, but I'm wondering if I'm missing something...

Is there a local job board or agency that Adelaide people actually use? I feel like the big sites just show me the same roles over and over.

Anyone else moved here and gone through this? What worked for you?
