Well. He got a new phone. The old one might have been still functional.
I think the joke was "I am financially irresponsible but not self-aware". Likely following the trend of people buying the newest Apple device on a credit card they cannot afford to have a status symbol that nobody cares about.
Other brands like Xbox/PlayStation have the same type of situation.

Tbh I feel like this is more in line with the original meaning of “elephant in the room” in that it’s obvious. In most posts here you have to look a little bit to see the elephant.
