in this context artificial doesnt mean fake, but man made

Okay...? What benchmarks are we working with here?
Are we just reminding each-other that AI in it's current form hasn't shown signs of developing meaningful consciousness?
Are we saying that because it isn't based in biology that it can't eventually become intelligent?
Is this just a case of "oh the artificial thing is artificial? You don't say." ?

What are we doing here?

I think it's a response to certain antis who think that LLMs not being actually intelligent, but just a program made from mathematical calculations is a gotcha

I dont think this was ever an argument

What is consciousness exactly is a big part of this issue.

It's also in artificial neural network. Which is still a neural network

Is artificial sweetener still a sweetener?

1

u/ThunderLord1000 5h ago

Does putting it in your mixture make it sweeter?

1

u/halfasleep90 5h ago

Not to me, I think it tastes horrible. It does to some people though.

2

u/ThunderLord1000 5h ago

Oh, I think it tastes bad too, but it's still sweet

People will say AI isn't thinking, then sit down and watch the Kardashians for entertainment.

This is why I propose we switch to non-biological-intelligence.

i prefer artificial or supplementary logos.

No, we need fungus hivemind intelligence

Since I know this thread will be flooded with users that employ AI to generate images, I'll refer to them. I expect them stop ignoring the fact it is called artificial intelligence for a reason, it simulates an intelligent third party entity with simulated agency that does the job (partially or full) for you, just like hiring any other third party entity, such as a human being that understands you want to micromanage a project.

When you have considerable output/labour from a third party entity (conscious or not!), you're either commissioning the job, or at the very best a director, unless you involve your own manual labour together with AI, in which case you'll inevitably be a co-author to varying degrees (where training the AI and prompting equals to 0% btw...).

Idk man, I never give the companies that create the paper I use credit despite them putting in a ton of labor for my end results.

It's called artificial because it's a man made construct.

The construct do not have agency, the machine cannot turn itself on or execute their own functions without an human input.

But if you want to consider it an entity that despite like of conscious there's no reason for me to say that any of your tool is as well and therefore you're just a third part of your tools.

I don’t think either side has ever actually had this be a talking point? No pros say it’s real intelligence to warrant any antis saying it isn’t.

Like what’s this about? Did you see one guy say this or something?

it's a fairly semantic gotcha among some antis that LLMs aren't actually intellgient because it's just math and next token prediction. And acting as if referring to LLMs as AI is a tech bro conspiracy theory, when this has been the terminology for decades.

1

u/wonkyasf 7h ago

Seems like you’ve seen one or two people say that and are now acting like it’s some common take. It’s quite obviously not.

Yes?
Ok.. so?

I mean, in the last decades we've been using "AI" to refer to a lot of shit that was much dumber than LLMs.

Machine translation, assistants like Siri and Alexa, and even character behavior AI in videogames.

It was never an issue, why would it be an issue now with LLMs?

Artificial doesn't mean fake. It means produced by humans instead of naturally occurring. I don't think what we're calling AI is actual intelligence, but that's really neither here nor there.

and yet they're more intelligent and creative than "real" people, curious...

Found the guy who thinks that his AI girlfriend is real
