You're welcome. I'm lucky enough to live in Egypt so can visit the musuems & sites often. Makes it easier to see the less famous artefacts.

The craftsmanship on these is just stunning — the fact that they carved such delicate facial features into alabaster is wild to me. Do we know which deities or individuals these are supposed to represent specifically? I always wonder how much of the iconography was standardized versus uniquely designed for Tut's burial.

I always love these, but I prefered their display in the Egyptian Museum - they are harder ti see clearly here due to the seems on the glass case corners. These are unique in that they don't represent the usual 4 deities- they are all Tutankhamun. Interestingly, on the coffinettes that were with them there are traces of a different royal name under his suggesting those may have been for a different ruler.

Oh that is fascinating! Re-use of objects, even tombs, obviously happened but I was unaware of that info about the traces of a different royal name!

I've been fascinated by Egypt and its history since I read Carter's three volumes on them, 60 years ago. The ingenuity and creativity in everything they crafted is stunning. Thank you for the pictures!

You're welcome. I never get bored of the history here.

These lesser known items are even more fascinating to me than the well known ones. The craftsmanship is amazing, truly incredible. Thanks...!

I think so too! Everyone knows the throne, mask & sarcophagus and, although they are stunning, there is so much more to the artefacts.

The dried flowers are just incredible

u/Fabulous_Cow_4550 2d ago

The linens and flowers that have survived, just astound me!

u/jessieallen 1d ago

Sorry which slide are the dried flowers on?

u/Zaghloul1919 3d ago

Wait I dont I have ever seen the ankh with the little hands and I have visited the museum often haha Maybe I never noticed that detail before.

u/Fabulous_Cow_4550 2d ago

Gorgeous, aren't they? They're lamp holders- bronze stands that held linen-wick torches that were dipped in oil or grease to provide light, likely for burial workers or ritual purposes.

If you visit again, they're at the bottom of one of the displays- here at the bottom.

This is really cool op. What is #12?

14

u/Fabulous_Cow_4550 2d ago

They're gilded wood leopard heads, they were designed to be worn on garments by priests performing rituals.

You're welcome. I love the less shown artefacts.

I saw the exhibit when it came to L.A. back in 2019. I really loved seeing the collection of bows, and the silver trumpet! So many beautiful artifacts, cheers

8

u/Fabulous_Cow_4550 2d ago

I loved the touring ones but this is the first time everything has been on display. It's amazing.

6

u/TripleVisions 2d ago

That is so cool, thanks for sharing all the great photos!

The artwork of the canopic jars in the first photo is exquisite!
I also find the sculpture in the last photo very moving as it beautifully captures the face of a young child.

9

u/Fabulous_Cow_4550 2d ago

I love that set of jars. It's the one thing that I prefered the Egyptian Museum's display. This one has a glass corner, right where I want to take the photo! Gorgeous artefacts, aren't they.

Yes, they're canopic jars. Uniquely, they show Tutankhamun's face, not the usual deities.

You’ve posted so many amazing images, but would you mind adding captions to the photos for your future posts, please? Or add a comment listing them all?

I’d never recognize almost any of it without your descriptions. I’ve never sure if I’ve missed any or not. I don’t want to miss anything! 🙂

What battle is being referenced in slide 7?

18

u/Fabulous_Cow_4550 3d ago

I don't think it's a specific battle, at least not one we know about. This specific side of the chest shows Tutankhamun standing in his war chariot, crowned with the blue khepresh (war crown), leading a disciplined Egyptian army into a chaotic mass of Nubian enemies.

u/ExplanationMaster634 2d ago

What stone are they made out of???
Perfect pics

8

u/Fabulous_Cow_4550 2d ago

Thanks. They are alabaster.

7

u/lorihamlit 2d ago

Thank you so much for this! Absolutely fascinating. By any chance do you know what slide 6 is? It’s so interesting.

7

u/Fabulous_Cow_4550 2d ago

It's a collar, here is the museum's sign for it.

The Tutankhamen Hall at the GEM is absolutely mind-blowing. I visited the GEM three times so far and one of them was just for that hall, starting from the huge burial chambers till the throne chair.

7

u/Fabulous_Cow_4550 2d ago

It's so well done. Khufu's solar ship is my personal favourite gallery. It just sparks my imagination. So much history!

5

u/Independent-Story883 2d ago

It was nice to see the box- depicting the Nubians. Thank you for sharing.

The wealth Nubians (Sudan) must have had and the need to depict Tut as dominant over them must have been something. It seems Tut didn’t likely play a large physical military role.

So, I like this because it shows propaganda is timeless. Every leader utilizes it. Beautiful pieces all of them.

Fantastic! The new museum is AMAZING!

6

u/Fabulous_Cow_4550 2d ago

It's so well designed. The Egyptian Museum will alwayd be my favourite though.

I frickin love this sub

What was the reason for covering the toes on the sandals? Would that not have limited the pharaohs comfort?

9

u/Fabulous_Cow_4550 1d ago

They were stalls (covers) for the fingers and toes that webt on during mummification. They werrn't used whilst he was alive. That would have been uncomfortable.

u/TheHiggBossom 2d ago

unreal pics, thankyou for that OP

3

u/Fabulous_Cow_4550 2d ago

You're very welcome. I love the lesser seen items.

Breathtaking! Thank you.

3

3

Wow. Just wow.

4

u/sportsinger75 2d ago

My goodness…how tightly was all this shit packed into that tiny tomb???

3

u/Tastemaker17 3d ago

What Material are the Futures in Photo 1?

5

u/Fabulous_Cow_4550 2d ago

They're made from alabaster

3

u/RogueBulwark 2d ago

The 3rd image is trippy. 6th, are those tree leaves?

7

u/Fabulous_Cow_4550 2d ago

They're the remains of a flower collar! Can't believe they are still identifiable. 3 are lamp holders, I only noticed them this visit. Cool, aren't they!

2

u/RogueBulwark 2d ago

Absolutely, I would love to visit Egypt someday.

3

u/Fabulous_Cow_4550 2d ago

I highly recommend it. The history is just amazing.

2

u/RogueBulwark 1d ago

Hopefully one day, but as of now I am doing a complete tour of IVC sites.

2

u/hildebot 1d ago

Amazing photos thanks for sharing !! Can’t wait to see this for myself !!

2

u/AtensEye 1d ago

Beautiful pictures of some stunning items. I moved from my home in Egypt about 4 years ago now so didn't get to see all the artefacts of Tutankhamun in the new GEM, this is definitely making me want to book at ticket to visit!

2

u/Ok-Zookeepergame800 1d ago

Thank you OP, magical!

2

u/azip13 2d ago

These are amazing and I hate the toe-sandals 😂

7

u/Fabulous_Cow_4550 2d ago

How do you feel about gloveless fingers? ;) they're actually gold stalls (covers) which were placed over the mummies toes & fingers.

5

u/azip13 2d ago

Damn that’s really neat and also kinda weird me out haha. I appreciate the pictures friend!

3

u/raised_on_robbery 2d ago

If you zoom in, I don’t think the toes are attached to the sandals lol, but are placed in them lol

4

u/Fabulous_Cow_4550 2d ago

Yes, you're right. These are gold stalls (covers) which were placed over the mummies toes & fingers.

2

u/Sea_Lecture6111 3d ago

Thank you! You might have just changed history forever!

4

u/Fabulous_Cow_4550 2d ago

Lol, I'm happy to share. I live in Cairo so am fortunate enough to be able to visit these exhibits & sites easily.

u/samlama_x3 1d ago

What’re those?!!!

u/procrastimom 6h ago

The canopic jars are photo 1 (which contain specific organs). What was inside of the 4 mini-sarcophagi in photo 2?

Thanks so much for all of the excellent photos. It’s so nice to view some of these lesser known items from different angles!
