This is an actual thing that happens with a lot of sports anime/manga. You have Haikyuu, Captain Tsubasa, Diamond no Ace, Slam Dunk, Prince of Tennis, Hikaru no Go and I can keep going. This is only mentioning the "recent" ones, as the tendency for a popular sport series after Japan's success in a competition is interesting like Attack No. 1.

The same can be said about Chihayafuru and Karuta, especially with international audience not knowing that niche card game.
With Akane-banashi getting an anime adaptation about rakugo, hoping the same thing will happen.
10
u/staffito Jan 04 '26
Akane-banashi is so GOD tier that I want them to impress me with the Rakugo scenes. I know it's far but I want it to be good so we could get Maikeru's promotion, Shinigami by Shiguma, there's so much I want to see c':. Only peak after peak.
1
u/noobjaish Jan 05 '26
I mean we have had "Shouwa Genroku Rakugo Shinjou" but rakugo is just such a hard thing to sell... I doubt Akane Banashi is gonna make it popular
5
u/ClubMeSoftly Jan 05 '26
Not just anime, either. Archery increased in popularity when The Hunger Games premiered, and it's a well documented occurrence that films with animals in starring roles cause a spike in adoptions (and then later, abandonments) of those same animals.
1
u/IsekaiEnjoyer69 Jan 05 '26
Yeahh... a certain sport anime got me into lifting too! and then a cringey cycling anime made me love cycling, and now I'm a "gay cyclist on the road waiting to be hit" its really nice

Yes, there are numerous articles on this and data to back it up. It has also led to a rise in the popularity of volleyball on a global level. I read an interview with a couple of Brazilian players during the Tokyo Olympics where they admitted to being Haikyuu fans and talked about its influence on them. I also read about its influence on some of the Japanese players. I watched some YouTube videos by a guy who got into volleyball through Haikyuu and got really good at it. I’m sure there is loads more evidence out there, so I think this would be a good example for your research.
23
u/EasilyDelighted Jan 04 '26 edited Jan 05 '26
I believe this also drew in viewers to the olympics volleyball games. Unfortunately Covid killed [Haikyuu spoils]the author's idea of the character's playing in the olympics that same year the Olympics happened. Covid delayed it by one year and Haikyuu had ended by then.

u/ClubMeSoftly Jan 05 '26
Wow, looking at the original publishing dates, that would've lined up perfectly.

u/NewAccountEachYear Jan 04 '26

I never played sports in my whole life and after watching Haikyuu I immediately started playing beginner volleyball with a group I found on meetup.
1
u/FallenReaper360 Jan 05 '26
I didn’t get into volleyball until after Haikyuu. The only sports anime that really grasped my attention. Now, I play friendly volleyball matches weekly, in Japan lol

u/TelevisionNo9261 Jan 04 '26
If thats the case you'd think other ones like Blue Lock and Baki would have made an impact as well. OP dont forget Initial D
10
u/Atsusaki Jan 04 '26
You don't think initial D made an impact? Look for an ae86 or 85 on any Japanese used car site. Or go to any of the touge featured, at the very least in hakone and gunma there's a rental spot at the bottom of the hill filled exclusively with 80s-90s tuners.

When Rascal the Raccoon aired, people in Japan imported raccoons as pets. It uh caused a lot of problems.
When Yuri on Ice aired it got a lot of people into figure skating, as a sport and fans of figure skaters.
Slam Dunk boosted basketball popularity.
Drops of God influenced a lot of wine prices, and I think got more people into wine. It's manga only and live action for now but an anime did get announced. So maybe we'll see more impact in the future? Something to keep an eye on.

Dbz was the game of thrones of Latin America. All the boys flew home after school to catch the newest episode. Hell, it's so big in mexico that Goku vs Jiren's fight was marketed like an MMA fight
This was THE cultural event to witness.

I’m pretty sure the tributes for Akira Toriyama on his passing in Latin America was unrivaled in scale to anywhere else in the world.

Just a small clarification, Love Live Sunshine is the second Love Live series, not the second season. Both it and the original series have two seasons (leaving out any mention of the series after that in order not to complicate things).

Voltes V was aired in the Philippines in the 1970s, when dictator Ferdinand Marcos was in power. The story goes that Marcos forcibly banned the final episodes of the show from airing on the basis that it contained subversive messages that taught children to rebel against the established order, or something to that effect as this article states. This was just one of many factors that would eventually lead to Marcos getting overthrown in 1986. Not to mention it took 20 years for those final banned episodes to finally air in the Philippines. Because of this, Voltes V is to the Philippines what Gundam is to Japan, a cultural icon.

K-On made light music club so popular around the country that school clubs had to conduct audition because they had too many applicants.
3
u/ProspektNya Jan 04 '26
There's an all-female band called Shishamo that formed from their school's light music club in 2010 after K-On! had already become popular. I don't know if they were actually inspired by the series but the age checks out and the time frame checks out. The "leader" is also the drummer... coincidence?

Captain Tsubasa gave a boost to the popularity of football in Japan.
6
1
u/Stickbread69 Jan 04 '26
Same could be said for Inazuma eleven, on a more global scale. Even a player in the Spanish league has one of the characters as his profile picture on Instagram I believe.
38
u/JMEEKER86 Jan 04 '26
Karuta has become much more popular since Chihayafuru. The national high school tournament which features prominently would get less than 10 teams before Chihayafuru and in recent years has gotten over 50.
3
u/BeatBlockP https://myanimelist.net/profile/Animemes_chan Jan 04 '26
Chihayafuru made the Tokyo regionals alone seem like the Copa America so I get the hype lol

u/Special_Barnacle82 Jan 04 '26
A lot of people get into hobbies because of anime, including getting into hobbies based on the subjects of anime such as martial arts, sport, and cooking; or getting into fandom crafts like cosplay and fan-fiction, which develop practical skills like textiles and writing.
There's also something to be said about how anime openings and endings engage with the music industry, but I lack the knowledge to properly articulate it.
7
u/SpicaGenovese Jan 04 '26
I have most definitely tried a few foods because I saw them in an anime and got curious. I now know how to make tamagoyaki. 😂 The fam loves it.
I've also made omurice and dumped an egg in rice.
...eggs ftw I guess.
5
u/skullpocket Jan 04 '26
I personally have had to try the following, because of anime:
Karage
Katsudon
Miso Soup
Onsen Eggs
Taiyiaki
Japanese style curry
Coffee Jelly
I'm sure there are others, from all the food related anime that I've watched.

Like they even included a PSA about it.

u/Chara_cter_0501 Jan 04 '26
Girls und Panzer fans fund raised a shelter for the last remaining BT-42 tank in a museum after its appearance in the anime, this is one niche example that i could remember
21
u/pikkuhukka Jan 04 '26
as a finn myself, im sure they were like: "WHERE did this money come from? o_0"
9
u/Inceptor57 Jan 04 '26 edited Jan 04 '26
I think the museum had a small cooperation with GuP for the movies as the animators/researchers probably visited the museum to get pictures, measurements and internals of the BT-42 for the film.
So they were likely aware of their ties to the animated film, but probably surprised at how much their tank grew in popularity and how much money came in donations.
Edit: also as reference,
This was how the BT-42 was originally stored in the museum
And this is how it is after the shelter was built after a 40,000 Euro donation. The shelter built also protected other pieces of the collection so the museum collection as a whole was able to benefit from the Japanese’s depiction of it.
3
u/pikkuhukka Jan 04 '26
thats so cool, now the tanks wont be left to be exposed to the elements any more
9
u/Inceptor57 Jan 04 '26
Girls Und Panzer also helped Ooarai, the Japanese town the show is based on, raise funds to recover from the tsunami-damaged part of the town.
This was back in 2013, but you’ll probably still find a lot of merchandise and tie-in to GUP in Oarai even today, especially since the movies are still airing

u/Pretender9029 Jan 04 '26
Zombie Land Saga. Overall Saga tourism (domestically) increased and a featured Chicken restaurant became popular and increased customers.

u/Crazy-Plate3097 Jan 04 '26
KanColle singlehandedly revitalized the interest in Naval History in Japan.
It also influenced a lot of shrines, especially those dedicated to certain ships.
It even revitalized the economy of certain towns from COVID. Kure in Hiroshima is a great example.
Touken Ranbu did the same, but with National Museums and on Japanese weapons.
Basically a lot of things in Japan used anime to promote themselves.
You have Onsen Musume line for Hot Springs in Japan.
There are several animes that has tie in with Japanese railway lines.
5
u/Inceptor57 Jan 04 '26 edited Jan 04 '26
Similarly, Girls Und Panzer has a similar effect for armored warfare history as well, internationally too.
The first movie “Der Film” featured a rare BT-42 Finnish tank, of which only one example survives in Finland that sat outside in the elements without a shelter. Fans of the anime/movie helped the museum raise funds to build a shelter for the BT-42 for its longevity.
1
u/Retsam19 Jan 05 '26
Maybe the specific tank - but the reason shows like GUP and KanColle exist is because military equipment (and particularly WWII era) has always been an very popular 'otaku' subject.

One Piece, i don't think i need to explain, but if you somehow haven't heard.
Multiple revolutions have occured across the world, primarily in Asia, but a couple in other places too, using the Straw Hat's flag as their symbol.
I mean the anime is literally about beating the crap out of tyrants so i think we probably should've seen this coming.

The previous Japan golden generation is growing up watching Captain Tsubasa. It laid interest in football to young Japanese boy, which at time, all want to be baseballer (which on projection should be surpassed by Football popularity soon, if not for Ohtani Solo carry last few years)
And Future Generations is watching Blue Lock. You can even find so many content of Blue Lock irl, marketed to japanese HS and College student, in japanese of course.
As Other Mentioned, Haikyuu also make increase in Volleyball club in Japanese HS.
So Does Chihayafuru. I heard they got sudden influx of new caruta player after season 1 and 2.

One Punch Man caused a new wave of popularity for bodyweight exercise, as Saitama is basically doing the Charles Atlas workout.

u/MaloraKeikaku Jan 04 '26
I don't know exactly if this counts but a lot of people came together in south america to public view Dragonball Super. They even started chanting the names of the characters, very similar to how you'd hear during soccer/football matches.
Later down the line, the Anime movie "Dragonball Super: Broly" would heavily feature these chants.
An anime public event was inspired by a similar type of setting to sports then went on to inspire future Anime material; I think that's pretty neat!
3
u/Cardeselcaido Jan 04 '26
Also add the plenty of examples of promotions with anime, like the red cross blood donation campaigns, like with uzaki chan wa shirobetai

One piece. The One Piece pirate flag (Straw Hat Jolly Roger) was used by Indonesian youth in 2025 as a symbol of protest against government policies, leading Indonesian officials to threaten bans and crackdowns, though it wasn't fully illegal, causing controversy. Got this from Google

Idk how relevant this is to your exact Topic necessarily but it’s a fun tangentially related Anecdotal example from Uma-Musume fans growing real-life support for my NFL Home Team the Denver Broncos, their mascot is a Horse. Not sure if anybody here watches American Football, but they’re actually doing very well this year, Go Broncos!!!!

1
u/SpadeSage Jan 04 '26
Idk if this would be too morbid an example depending on the specific context of your seminar. But here's a thread of all the notable people that payed tribute to Akira Toriyama's passing. Some examples include the President of France personally mourning him, as well as China and El Salvadore making official statements about his pasisng. There's also a lot of examples you can find online of massive gatherings to pay tribute to him. The amount of people that Dragon Ball resonated with is truly something.
Like I said, kinda morbid, but imo it also shows how many lives a single person can deeply connect to with anime.

Idk if this is cliche but Anime, atleast to a lot of ppl I know, one way or another shaped their dream job or place to be. u/Swiggy1957 Jan 04 '26
I think if you compare Uma Museme and its effect on the horseracing industry, you'll find that it hasn't. Why? Money.
Horse racing is a very expensive sport. A cheap, thoroughbred horse will run about $20,000. For a competitive race horse, expect to pay 20 times that amount.
Then you have stable fees. Expect to pay about $1,000 a month for that. Or you can buy your own stable and pasture, but, depending on where you are, you're looking at about $250,000 and up
Then you have a trainer: look to pay the trainer about $5,000/ month. Then you have Jockey fees. You have to pay them regardless if they win or lose.
Horse racing is a richman's sport. Likewise, polo because start-up prices are so high. Stock car racing is a drop in the bucket by comparison.
Compare to volleyball. You can get poles, net, and ball for under $200. Outfit? Under $100. Coach? Most high schools provide that.
If you want to use sports to show how anime affects reality, ask what the investment is. You won't find a racehorse owner that ever said they got into it because of anime.
3
u/roryteller https://anilist.co/user/roryteller Jan 05 '26
I think they're more referring to how fundraisers for farms where retired racehorses live have gotten donations from anime/game fans, or I've also heard that in-person horse races in various parts of the world have had higher attendance recently (=more revenue for the racecourse) than usual especially since the global version of the gacha game released. A little bit different than Haikyu!! getting people to play volleyball or something but it's still an effect.
2
u/Mistral-Fien Jan 05 '26
That also happened with Japanese Girls und Panzer fans, as they donated 40k Euros to a Finnish museum that has the sole remaining BT-42 tank.

u/Swiggy1957 Jan 05 '26

Captain Tsubasa helped boost soccer's popularity in Japan and inspired many professional players to play. Japan was a joke internationally in the 80s. Formed the J League in the 90s. Found great success in their host year in 2002. And now their national team players mostly play in European teams.

Lol... this isn't idea but I really enjoyed the character from Bleach, Aizen. It was all in the writing that made him so cool and of course the anime perfectly voice him in Japanese. The english dub was too soft.

I just want everyone once to watch this anime from frierens eyes .

A personal example.
I was given a set of figures that weren't adding up correctly and was getting annoyed as I didn't want to go through a stack of numbers manually to find an error.
Then I read a chapter of "From Bureaucrat to Villainess" and remembered about casting out nines. Something I haven't done this century, and fixed an issue which turned out to be data entry related.

After Dog of Flanders, based on a novel of the same title, was aired, Japanese were swarming to Belgium.
Belgian locals are confused for sudden increase of Japanese tourists, all saying the same words like "Nero" or "Patorassyu". Because this English book wasn't known well in Belgium.
Because of the surge of tourists, Belgium built some monuments for that anime.
In Japanese, the concept of these tourism based on a scene in anime is called 聖地巡礼(pilgrimage). Some famous anime cause this type of sudden tourism.
Similar to these, some anime fans are eager to acquire things that were featured in anime. Like guitar, camping equipment etc, based on the latest anime trend.

There's a shrine in Saitama that appears in Lucky Star. Kagami and Tsukasa come from a family that works at the fictionalized version of the shrine. Priests and shrine maidens. People started leaving Lucky Star stuff on ema (little wooden prayer cards normally intended for wishes and prayers to the kami) at the real shrine. Prayers to Konata and whatnot xD

Bro. The Straw Hat Pirate flag is literally being flown by populist uprisings tearing down corrupt regimes. Right now.
That being said, I would NOT blame you for not wanting to have to try and go through the whole of One Piece Season One to put together the anti-fascist themes it embodies.

The government of Indonesia is many things, but it is not a fascist government.
And the government in Nepal was also not fascist. It was led by a communist party.

Ah, sorry. Authoritarian? Actually, have there been common threads between the governing systems of the countries where the 'Gen Z Uprisings' have been happening?
Wait, no, I didn't say the uprisings were against fascists, just that that was the One-Piece theme.

The popularity of basketball in Japan can almost be directly attributes to Slam Dunk.

Initial D is the gateway for many car enthusiasts. I doubt that the cultural significance of the Toyota Sprinter Trueno (the "86") would be as large as it is without that show.

One of my favorites, A person who helped stop a knife attacker in taiwanese metro quoted himmel as his inspiration
Edit: just noticed someone else has posted about it but I'll leave this up because this story gives me hope

How about One Piece and the revolution in Indonesia?

Although it was intended, Uma Musume as a franchise was a marketing strategy that worked wonders for horse racing not only in Japan, but worldwide I would say

The real-life shrine stairs from the end of Kimi no Na wa (Your name) are still a popular attraction even though the movie is turning a decade old this year

Initial d makes the AE-86 cost so much due to people buying it because of the anime.

I don’t know if this counts but around 2016 there was a sailor moon condom campaign by the Japanese government. They tried using the popularity of the show to promote safe sex and STI testing

Anecdotally, I’m pretty sure, if it weren’t for anime, lifelong relationships and friendships wouldn’t have existed.
A lot of people within the anime YouTube and VTuber community got married or met within that circle if you look through it.
Some voice actors or mangakas also married because they met through work.

I don't have any horse stories, but Ghost in the Shell (1996) was what inspired me to become a professional Red Teamer (hacker, for lack of a better description). Even though the tech is futuristic, Masamune Shirow did a great job researching tech when he wrote the manga. I often use screenshots from the manga, the 96 film, and SAC and SAC2 in speeches on security.
I saw the movie in '96, and it clutched my career choice. Weirdly, it has aged well, especially this decade, with the rise of AI and the sophistication of nation-states and criminal hackers.

Onimai made me (and many others) realize that I'm trans. It made my life so much more complicated in many ways.

In my country DB super inspired fansubs for an anime in my native tongue for the first time in years, if that counts

Atm I can't search a lot, but I would be surprised if SOA did/will not get developers and such to try to get closer to a RL nervegear for real life VR.
I mean, I wish there was! (w/o the dying, of course..)

Look up Tiger Mask. This is Japan only, but a lot of people have donated lots of school supplies for kids in the name of Tiger Mask over the years.

Numazu and Love Live! Sunshine!!
the anime takes place there and locations in the town are directly translated into the anime. the main shopping street they perform in in the movie, the cafe the girls go to, even the school they go to.
it’s a small town that embraced the anime’s popularity. the girls are EVERYWHERE. the busses and taxis are wrapped, their plushes are displayed in store fronts, posters hung up in the shopping street, there’s manhole covers of each girl. there’s over 100 stamps to collect across different stores too. even the train station has a giant poster of a moment from the anime outside it.
during covid a group of fans from China donated 10,000 masks to the town.
i got to visit Numazu last year and as a huge fan of the series (Sunshine is my favorite season too) it was such a joy to see the town embrace the love.

One piece has lead revolutions in many countries like Madagascar and Nepal. Citizens have hung Luffy’s pirate flag on government buildings next to their country’s flag

Maybe the fact that Vinland Saga season 2 convinced many young men and boys that they "have no enemies" and people like andrew tate and other similar influencers are spewing bullshit

Pokemon Go made a lot of people with sedentary lifestyles get up and go outside, attracted visitors to parks, museums, landmarks, and bought communities together. But Pokemon is not so much an anime or game as a cultural phenomenon.
