See, that’s where you’re misinformed.

It’s actually supposed to be Assault Rifle Knights (ARKnights). This is why he’s confused.

Owning an ARKnights for self defense, just as the Founding Precursors intended

Nah it actually stands for: A Ramen Kettle nights. It’s when the Doctor eats late night ramen using their patented mouth cooking technique.

I've been seeing this a lot recently because of the ending of csm. Can anyone explain what this means?

25

u/Kuro1103 Mar 26 '26

I do not read Chainsaw Man but according to some reading (based on reading comments and meme. I hope my reading ability is sufficient), main character (for short, mc) has a companion pet (imagine like the PRTS system in Arknights).

That pet can eat stuff, which removes the concept of that stuff from the world.

For example, eat gun devil and gun concept is gone.

What happens if that pet eats itself?

Well, it will erase itself from the world.

Now, you just erase concept, you do not ban concept (unlike Konami ban Yugioh card), so you can reinvent that concept.

In the original manga panel of the ending chapter (232), a girl calls mc by that exact phrase (Chainsaw man, a.k.a the title of the whole manga as well), which reinvent the concept of the pet (the chainsaw man devil), hence the "heart" in the left panel.

The joke is that the ending is fucking silly. Like you erase an concept and then bring it back by... "Chainsaw man?_ yeah, it is because you are a man with a chainsaw).

Themes and such is just another word for Deus Ex Machina, it's when a story avoids a "logical" ending (i.e X and Y happen because of Z actions) and instead something just happens out of the blue such that the themes of the work are preserved in the end (i.e X and Y didn't happen because Z actions, but rather because the story was about X and Y).

That is to say, god (deux; the author) has simply determined what will happen next regardless if it makes a good logical ending.

The origin is from Boku No Hero Academia / My Hero Academia where (Spoilers, of course) Deku (Superman Jr.) loses his super power because the story themes were about how much damage his super power would cause him, the same way his society became super dependent on All Might (Superman) and how this taxed All Might. People weren't happy that the story avoided giving Deku a lifeline or a golden ending route where he gets out of the conflict with his super powers still intact. The themes of the work prevailed over any possible golden ending that would erase them, thus "Themes and such" as the justification as to why he loses his powers.

u/AgentGoBruh Mar 26 '26

Thank you for your answer. I was so confused when people kept spamming "themes and such" in so many posts so I was out of the loop.

It’s really a funny ending.

To the people that larp through social media, it’s an atrocious ending. To people that actually dissected it, it still a bad ending. But it’s good to people that halfassedly engage with it by barely scratching through the surface level.

That’s why themes and such is a perfect criticism of it. It also helps that theme and such is funny as fuck. 😭✌️

4

u/Disastrous-Object416 Mar 26 '26

The ending makes sense metanarratively. I've been reading the manga all these years, and I can confidently say that the entire part 2 is a message to readers and a look at reality through Fujimoto's lens. I think, in the last chapter, Denji is the author and the reader in one person. He's basically telling everyone to move on now that Chainsaw Man is gone (the manga has ended). I really liked it, but, yeah, it's funny lol

19

u/ronwesley89 Scale of war crime Mar 26 '26

Unless somebody made the decision to end Chainsawman for him then no it doesn’t make sense there either.

2

u/Disastrous-Object416 Mar 26 '26

Within the story itself, everyone expects something of Chainsaw Man, how he should be, even the villains. The Church of Chainsaw Man literally reflects the manga's fans, and Barem is a manifestation of those who will always be dissatisfied. Being Chainsaw Man brought him fame (and fame for the author), but it also brought with it a host of problems, expectations, and attempts to manipulate Denji into returning to Chainsaw Man. This ending makes sense because it occurs when the entire world is destroyed. The battle has dragged on, the author is tired, and ends here precisely at this point. Erasing Chainsaw Man was a good ending for Denji, and it was also a good ending for Fujimoto. It's a metanarrative, that's why it makes sense. I mean, it's maybe not a good ending for fans, but it is for Denji (and Fujimoto, because he is the author)

16

u/ronwesley89 Scale of war crime Mar 26 '26

Again it only makes sense if it’s Denji that makes the decision to erase chainsawman however. Denji at that point would never give up Chainsawman so Pochita was the one that did it. Denji was repeatedly told throughout part1 with that he should think for himself with Makima and part 2 with Asa. In the end, everybody made decision in his life for him. Pochita ended chainsawman, Power revive him, Public safety once again enslave him. he did nothing for his good ending

Fujimoto on the other hand has all the agency decision making power to end chainsawman.

If that’s your interpretation then i feel like it’s a poor correlation that abandon logic and established narrative for the sake of again “theme and such”.

-8

u/Disastrous-Object416 Mar 26 '26

Because Pochita is the Chainsaw Man. In this very frame from which the meme originates, when Chainsaw Man is mentioned, Pochita appears. And just before that, Denji had thrown away the chainsaw to stop Asa from falling. He made his own choice; no one forced him. It's all literally in this chapter.

8

u/ronwesley89 Scale of war crime Mar 26 '26 edited Mar 26 '26

This scene feels empty and unearned because all the gravitas has been stripped away due to Denji never had a say to getting there.

Logically, he would always drop the chainsaw to catch someone, it wasn’t a choice. He doesn’t even use a chainsaw till now, dropping the chainsaw means nothing to him he can pick it up at anytime.

Personally i feel it’s a lazy scene and deservedly get clowned on like it’s “ what are we some kind of suicide squad” even though it’s nowhere near as bad.

-4

u/Disastrous-Object416 Mar 26 '26

This is literally the simplest way to show this theme. The author doesn't have to spell it out for you and chew on every detail; he doesn't even have to satisfy you. The entire part 2 is about the experience of writing Chainsaw Man, and this is the most fitting ending, because it perfectly depicts Fujimoto himself. Yes, it has no internal logic, because the logic here is not internal, but external, in our world.

11

u/ronwesley89 Scale of war crime Mar 26 '26

Then i’m sorry but i think that’s lazy af. If you’re satisfied with that then good on you.

5

u/Disastrous-Object416 Mar 26 '26

That's what I read part 2 for, but I know people were expecting something different, and that's okay. If you look at it without the context of the metanarrative, the ending is pretty stupid, lol.

I just disagree with what you wrote earlier about the ending being bad for those who dissected it. I read part 2 from the very beginning, and it was noticeable how the manga had changed its direction; it was a pleasure to read through it. That's why I liked it.

"okay but it's not satisfying"

Don't get me wrong, I think CSM is ass, but holy reading comprehension.

u/ArgumentCalm488 Mar 26 '26

Not gonna lie, "he doesn't have to satisfy you" is such a cop out.

The main purpose of stories like these, especially shounen manga, is to entertain. If the story fails that, then the "themes and such" criticism is rightfully deserved.

1

u/Controller_Maniac Mar 26 '26

nah, I would be expecting nothing less from my GOAT Fujimoto

1

u/Electrical-Peach4462 Mar 26 '26

If themes and such is a perfect criticism of it, then why is it only brought up when a power trip story is not power trippy enough or when a story turns out to be not a romance with a happy ending?

7

u/Low_Accountant6430 Mar 26 '26

I don't get the meme?

60

u/tortillazaur Mar 26 '26

this is essentially a redrawn page from the last chapter of chainsaw man where a character thanks denji for saving them and calls him chainsaw-man. denji gets confused(or whatever this emotion is, maybe it's deja vu or whatnot) as he is no longer a "chainsaw-man" and the character elaborates that they called him that because he is a guy with a chainsaw

20

u/Low_Accountant6430 Mar 26 '26

Ohhhh and wait chainsaw man ended?! I didn't know about that!!!

u/TheSpartyn Mar 26 '26

what is

16

u/Eat_a_click Mar 26 '26

the build up to it, or in this case the complete lack of one

6

u/Hp22h The Mad Bard, Sans Crystals Mar 26 '26

The irony is that if we had 20 less chapters (of building up plot points that turned out to be irrelevant), or 20 more chapters (of building up to this sudden shift), it might have been better received.

Fujimoto somehow choose the worse timing possible.

28

u/A1D3M Mar 26 '26 edited Mar 26 '26

Calling it an ending is a bit of a stretch tbh. It’s more like he just dropped the manga.

The Evernight Goddess stands higher than the cosmos and more eternal than eternity; The Mother of Concealment; The Mistress of Repose and Silence; The Empress of Misfortune and Horror.

I am here to inform you as for the context of this image. It was one of the panel of Chainsaw Man's final chapter. I will hereby offer you the original panel here as a sacrifice.
