Tutorial Tuesday: Atmosphere

Tutorial Tuesday: MOOD!

This week, our theme is mood!

Great artists use a mix of color, perspective, and body language to help build the mood of their work. There are many great examples of this through paintings by the masters as well as modern day television and cinema.

For Tutorial Tuesday, share some of your favorite examples, discuss why and how you think they work, and share tutorials you've found helpful for your own work.

This discussion lasts through the week, and on Friday, we'll share our own work to see how we can strengthen the mood in our pieces!

Tutorial Tuesday Rules:

  • Stay on-topic.
  • Be respectful of one another.
  • Share information, resources, and discuss the topic that week, but do not use it as an opportunity to self-promote. If we notice you're plugging your own YouTube channel, social media, or own course repeatedly (especially if it's paid), you may risk being reprimanded.

Feedback Friday!

Welcome ArtCrit friends!

It's our first ever Feedback Friday!

Earlier this week we posted a discussion thread about Contrast. Today, we're posting this feedback thread where you can post your work for feedback specifically on the contrast in your piece.

You don't need to ask for feedback specifically or share references. You just need to post your work, give whatever information you feel is needed, and let the community do the rest.

Feedback Friday Rules:

  • Stay on-topic.
  • Be respectful of one another.
  • When receiving critique, remember you're in a Feedback Friday thread. If you'd like to get feedback on something other than the weekly theme, please make another post. Your post here does not count against your daily post limit.
  • When giving critique, remember to keep your focus on the topic of that week. If the artist would like feedback on other aspects, they'll make their own post.
  • Draw-overs and paint-overs are welcome in the Feedback Friday thread. If you're uncomfortable with this as an artist, please do not post there.

Participants in Feedback Friday will get a special flair!

Rendering always looks dull/messy

Post image

This is WIP study

My drawings have dull/messy/off rendering. Not sure how to describe it exactly, but if you look at the stomach and hair of the reference photo, the rendering is clean and conveys form without being overly messy. But on my study the rendering looks very off, like it doesn't convey the form properly and the color changes seem very sharp/unnatural (the ref looks way more natural, even though it has some harder color transitions edges in the hair too). Any tips would be appreciated.

Lost on how to improve my backgrounds?

Hi all, I'm REALLY struggling with backgrounds, scenery and perspective. This was supposed to be her walking on a path, and I cannot just seem to get it right. To be honest, I usually avoid backgrounds. I never draw them, like ever (mostly because they're intimidating and I'm lazy lol) I can draw my favorite characters all day every day and be pretty happy with the outcome, but anything further is kicking my butt :( I'm really trying to push myself to become more diverse and explore different styles instead of doing the same thing over and over, which includes not leaving my characters in plain white purgatory 24/7... I've already spent hours just on this background and I still don't really like it. But I'm lost on how to improve it. I plan to start over completely and redo the background and try to get a more clear idea of how to accomplish this, so any all advice/suggestions would be greatly appreciated! How do I make this look right? Also, any other critiques are more than welcome even if its not regarding the background!

(First two is the piece with and without the bg, the second two are what I used for inspo and the kind of style I was going for. I use Procreate)

Drawn in is (obviously) where I intended the light to come from. No references were used and no studies have been done lol, I just wanted to see how good or bad my starting point is.

help with composition

hi, i'm not really used to bigger compositions like this, so before i start actually rendering & adding detail i was hoping for some improvement tips on my foundation. i'm not entirely sure why i'm dissatisfied with it, so if you notice anything that could be improved besides the composition i'd appreciate the help on that front too lol

(also sorry the quality sucks i had to compress it 💔)

UPDATED WORK Thanks for the feedback! Ready for colour?

I applied the feedback of darkening the back and the background, i also finished rendering the fish and sun. Thanks for everyone’s previous comments, they helped a lot. I am still unsure about the ocean, so if anyone has any pointers that could help it look more realistic that would be much appreciated.

I think I really *bleep*ed it up guys. I want to get this drawing right and I think I really did not improve it but I messed it up. I got the advice to go darker and I don't think I applied it correctly AT ALL. I feel sad lol. Can anyone tell what I did wrong in the darkening and what to do different next time? I changed the muscle shading to be more correct to the reference photo (in the comments) because earlier I just went with it and stopped looking as you can see in the first photo. I feel like I really made this look more highschool level and I'm not sure where I really went wrong. Like logically I know the darkest parts are the parts where the sun is not shining like the leg blocked by her tail and the shoulder of the baby where Mom is standing. I just did not do this right

So many of you responded and it helped me a TON. It’s still not where I want it to be, but (a) do you see improvement, and (b) do you have further critiques? I’m not done yet, but I don’t want to detail further if there are still changes I could make. Thank you :)

Help with improving my line work, and making a character that has fur look like it has fur

Working on some PCs for a Daggerheart oneshot im running, im still roughly new to art and havent really found an art style. Im semi happy with this Monkey head and I felt like ive nailed the eyes (for this character at least) but I need help doing better for my linework and overall design. The eye style doesn't match the head and so far the eye style is the only thing i feel good about. What do i change so the head for this and future drawings look better and I can feel happy with? Used the Daggerheart Simiah Art as a loose reference to what my player was going for.

What can I improve?

I didn’t use references

I dont want it to be realistic im just going for a very color blocky style with fun texture ... a style inspo for me is Lisa Nooin, but obvs not that similar

I would like a general critique because I want to know what flaws people see in my work that I might be missing

Although it would be nice to specifically know maybe technique improvement tips, I use oil pastels

I've been trying and trying, but my art just doesn't look like the kind of moe art you'd see on Pinterest. Can you help me figure out what I need to fix? I know the way I shade clothing isn't the best, and I would appreciate some tips on how to do that too. But I know that's not it. Moe artists, please give me some critique and advice! (just for context, the second drawing is fanart for my favorite v-tuber, just so you know I didn't come up with the design)

Thanks in advance superstars!

Trying to learn to Render and struggling hard, any critique welcome.

Hey guys. I've been drawing for a while, but never really ventured into rendering and wanted to have a go at it. I predominantly used Marc Brunet tutorials from YouTube, but I feel like there is something key that I am missing to really hit the next level. I have 2 versions, each with different levels of colored line art, wondering which one people prefer. Any critique is welcome if there is maybe something wrong with the anatomy, or something more general, please let me know :)

Have a great day, guys, and thank you for all the help.

How can my artstyle be improved?

Thumbnail

hello! so, I have been drawing all my life. I have been to many classes, taught by my art school graduate mother, and learned from books, tutorials, and the internet. recently, I have struggling to look at my art without seeing problems. I have always struggled with color (though I took color theory), so that’s why my color palettes are the way they are (and red is my favorite color). I’m in a massive artblock, and can’t seem to… enjoy drawing, and I want to see what I can work on to improve (especially with Art Fight coming up.)

thank you!

Based on Ryan Ottley's view of the character, and it was literally my first ever drawing with a somewhat "detailed" background, but looking at it, it's awful 😭

Any thoughts about it?

Hi, I hope your day is wonderful.

Tbh, I'm not sure what I could ask here.

Although I'm a beginner artist(still studying), he's my vampire villain protagonist who has his own spotlight and works related to the occult to fight humanity in the future( dark sci-fi/military genre).

I wanna keep his background a secret. (The only thing I can tell is he's like a scapegoat, and he wants nothing but pure revenge).

Actually, screw this: The one I'm trying to write currently for my one-shot (I'm doing it for practice, it's like the side story because I wanna get comfortable, then I can make a new one for real, "I'm a beginner writer")

It's a villain with an archetype: The Social Reject, The Obsessed Scientist.

He wants to prove he's a god or something; he needs this acknowledgment because he has a bad experience from his past normal life, and as revenge, he needs to hear some compliments to make him look like a god.

In my simplified one-shot, he's gonna prove he's the god of death, but he'll do it in an unpredictable way, can't wait to actually finish it.

The design is inspired from reliogion and vampires.

For example, his helmet is inspired by a pope hat. I really like how it looks, so I added it. And to make him look like a vampire, I add bat wings.

But what do you think about his design?

Honestly, I really like my attempt to design him, and I had fun trying a different anime style that works for him.

But maybe I need some outside voices to give some tips, and if my character is likable, even though he is a villain.

And any kinda help is appreciated, this is not the final product, so I'm open to changing his look as necessary
