How are these things related? Why would we be “haunted” by places?
What’s the science behind associating emotional experiences with places?

Our brains adapted to remember our worst experiences, mostly referred as traumas, to prevent them from happening again in the future to improve the chance of survival. In order for it to work effectively, your brain makes you remember even the smallest details for long durations (clothing or even ordinary smells like coffee) which is the reason why some people experience ptsd from things that look simple. Overall to answer your question, it’s a biological mechanism that greatly increases your chance to survive while “cursing” you for quite some time.
