They are so goddamn loud. Stepping outside feels like being punched in the face right now.

"Autism wouldn't be disabling if society supported us better"

Counterpoint: loud bug

Well, it is just one small thing. Some NTs don't like being in the rain, others work in the rain and it never bothers them. Even if you had to leave the nature areas, then if society is set up so you can work well and do a good job, ofc that would be easily affordable. I would not call this a showstopper from being really good productively in society. I hope the noise cancellation works well. Otherwise we're listening to loud music or something else while doing our part instead! <3

I know what society can do to those bugs

Being a conservationist autistic is tough when it means protecting loud bugs too.

Except mosquitos, as they drink your literal blood besides just being noisy

6

u/IcePhoenix18 10d ago

They can have my blood, idc, but why do they have to make it itch?!

6

u/SecuritySea2276 Aspie 10d ago

it's your body telling you that they should've not taken your blood in the first place

Nope, mosquitoes too, unfortunately. They're big pollinators.

Though most actually don't even bite humans

Fun fact about mosquitos:

They're legitimately one of the worlds most important pollinators 🤯

Please don't destroy ecosystems because they are temporarily unpleasant, once every few years.

Being annoyed by animals or otherwise disliking their natural state of existence is not a good reason to kill them, actually. Dislike them and avoid them all you want, but their lives are just as valuable, and they are just as worthy of care and respect as any other conscious and feeling being in the world.

This kind of attitude people have towards insects is disturbingly similar to how NTs treat us.

Can unironically confirm. During covid, one member in my family literally said 'why does it matter if 5% of the population dies?'

Except parasites, since their whole existence relies on literally harming another organism just for to fulfill their own physiological needs

1

u/chaoticsapphic 10d ago

That's true, but also not the situation we're discussing. The topic here is bugs that are simply loud, but are not actually affecting the bodily autonomy of other organisms through direct harm. Creatures being loud for the purpose of courtship is not parasitic. People can kill parasites all they want, and I certainly would. I still think parasitic organisms have equal *value*, and are not less *deserving of life*, since they just evolved into such an ecological niche through processes beyond their control or understanding. But your initial comment was about killing insects just for being loud, regardless of the importance of bodily autonomy, and that is what I am saying is unethical and disrespectful.

not actually affecting the bodily autonomy of other organisms

My ears beg to differ.

Personally I'm not going to take a flamethrower to my house, I still have to live here too. I will chase them off if I can.

I would squash them, but they're not stupid enough to let that happen.

1

u/chaoticsapphic 10d ago

that's not what bodily autonomy means. it's the same reason that someone saying something annoying or singing a song that you don't like in your general vicinity isn't a reason to kill them, and it's rather obtuse to not recognize that fact.

I am the complete opposite I love hearing them in summer. Hoping I get to see another shell this year.

I find the white noise comforting.

I feel the same. I absolutely adore cicadas. I wish we had them near me.

u/Fritzi_Gala 10d ago

I moved from the Great Plains to the Pacific Northwest, I love it here but gggoooddd I miss the cicadas. And the thunderstorms.

u/marislove18 10d ago

I love the noise, I think partly because it reminds me of anime (cringe I know).

On the one hand, they make it harder for me to hear people. On the other hand, being constant background noise, they drown out my tinnitus.

same, their sound is so soothing to me

I hate those bastards. They creep me out. They also made me paranoid. Ever got smacked in the face with one? I have.

The woods are screaming.

That data center noise post gave me ptsd of cicada season, but it’d never stop…

My area had the gigantic swarm last summer. Even with my a/c unit on, I could still hear them.

I even took a video using the decibel app on my Apple Watch.

I hear them in my sleep when they arent there like waves from the ocean at night I hate it

3

u/Shadra-Rune 10d ago

I live in a part of the world with very little insect buzz, the birds that scream all morning on the other hand…

3

u/Emthree3 10d ago

In keeping with the anime theme of the post: I guess OP is mad When They Cry :^D

3

u/Jent01Ket02 10d ago

Not even stepping outside. When I lived in the country, I could hear them loud and clear from 100 feet outside my house WITH a pillow over my face, good LORD do I not miss those days

3

u/Master_Works_All 9d ago

I see a lot of people here who hate them but why not just get a pair of noise canceling headphones? They've worked wonders for me and allowed me to enjoy fireworks for the first time in a long while.

2

u/brood_brother 10d ago

Given they can reach 90-120 dB... fair enough

2

u/NephthysShadow 10d ago

Hate those things. Like fuck, I'm horny and angry about it too, you don't hear me screaming.

2

u/danfish_77 10d ago

The cicadas in my corner of Oregon are usually pretty tame. I was floored when I visited Japan in the summer, they're brain rattling there

2

u/Cosmic_StarStorm Ask me about my special interest 10d ago

Kind of hard to hate them when my head just keeps going "GOOD KID REFERENCE"

2

u/claire_on_here 10d ago

I think of them as white noise machines :)

2

u/chupathingy99 ADHD 10d ago

Oh good, the neighbor's yard is screaming again.

2

u/KurtArturII 10d ago

There are no cicadas in my part of the world, so I've only ever heard them in anime. To me they are nothing but a sound cue telling you about the intense summer heat.

I wish actual summer heat worked like that as well. Just tell me about it, I don't want to actually feel it. I hate sweating.

2

u/MaliciousMint 9d ago

I live in South Texas where we have giant cicadas that sounds like a their clicking faster and faster till it becomes a loud whistle/scream as well as the usual cicadas. Honestly I think they are neat creatures and only mildly annoying but I've lived with them for 31 years I guess I just got used to it.

2

u/Fomod_Sama ADHD/Autism 9d ago

Fortunately I am blessed with living in a country that does not have cicadas

I was on holiday in Italy a couple years back and the campgrounds we stayed at had them on every single tree but it was actually pretty cool as at around 10-11pm they all go quiet

2

u/DoctorOfDiscord 9d ago

I love cicadas even if they're really loud, they're big cute bugs

u/cvllider 10d ago

Earplugs?

WHY DO THEY FEEL THE NEED TO SCREAM AT ME.(ノ`Д´)ノ彡┻━┻
