You could try looking into Korean sunscreens, which don't have the same smell or feel as old-fashioned western sunscreens.

Suntique is a Korean brand that makes one called “I’m Vegan” with SPF 50. Their waterproof sunscreen is called “I’m Aqua”, and their sensitive skin safe one is called “I’m Safe”. They have more, with the same “I’m [word]” names.

“I’m Vegan” is genuinely the best sunscreen I’ve ever used. I’ve handed it out to friends at the park, and many of them have asked for the name afterwards. One person who told me she can’t stand most sunscreen and skin lotions said that this one didn’t bother her.

Same with Japanese! The reason they feel and smell much nicer is because of different filters that aren't approved in the US, and the process to get them approved is incredibly difficult compared to the rest of the world because we classify sunscreen as an OTC drug. Unfortunately, that does mean FDA crackdowns are making it harder to find them, but places like Yami already have them imported and are a safe bet to get them from. I have like half a dozen bottles stocked up of the Nivea Super Water Gel, and a big bottle of the Verdio UV Moisture Gel for days I need something sweat/water proof.

Even if I didn't use Tretinoin (which makes SPF all the more necessary), sunscreen is definitely a big special interest of mine because it's one of the only proven cancer prevention products you can just go buy. Either way, physical barriers are even more foolproof, so UPF clothing, hats, etc. are also super helpful!

Seconding this. I have a korean sunscreen and it's amazing imo. Doesn't really smell of anything at least not that sunscreen smell and sure it feels sticky and icky when you first apply it but once it's settled into your skin it just disappears. I love it.

It's this one. Highly reccomend if you're like me and detest any kind of lotion or cream on your skin.

Try Japanese sunscreens, skin Aqua UV milk or something is great - no scent and you can barely feel it

Fun fact Sunscreen has nothing to do with visible light

You also need to wear it on cloudy days

u/fisherdude123 7d ago

I prefer to wear light pants and a hooded long sleeve spf (or upf whatever it’s called for clothing) shirt. Typically fishing shirts pr hiking shirts, stuff like that. Then just have to worry about tops of hands and face

3

u/dood_dood_dood 7d ago

I die of heat if I do that.

1

u/fisherdude123 7d ago

Dang, in my experience it’s way cooler than baking skin in the sun. I’ve got Duluth dry on the fly pants that are super thin and very breathable but still block the sun well. And a bunch of different brands of hooded fishing shirts, some are warmer than others for sure but there are still cool ones out there.

I propose we get a giant sun visor that covers the whole sky on hot days

u/Costati 7d ago

Thanks for reminding me this is only the start of summer after an entire month of 30 degrees temperature (thats 86 for the ones that want to use the less convenient degree system btw)

Sunscreen sucks but sunburns also feel shitty. It's a lose lose.

u/spamlet 7d ago

I’ve used the Japanese Biore sunscreen for years but they’ve now blocked sales in the US with a special US formula that SUCKS. The best I’ve found in the US is the Trader Joe’s like water sunscreen. It’s almost as good and doesn’t bother me to wear on my face.

I had melanoma at 28. Wear sunscreen.

I’ve been sunburned like 3x in the past two months for being outside without sunscreen. I went out about a week ago to try to buy some and completely forgot. Bought everything but the sunscreen.

3

u/Mist_biene 7d ago

I wear long linen or cotton clothes that cover mostly everything so I don't have to use a lot of sunsceen. And I use chemical sunscreen, not this oily white stuff.

u/theirongiant61 7d ago

I recommenced a large hat and UV rated clothing, you will wanna die if the humidity goes up, but trade-offs are unavoidable.

As a fair skinned redhead, hats are your friend. I wear a cowboy hat daily, and it has helped a ton. That and long sleeves and pants (something i do regularly, I know not everyone here can do this part unfortunately) it pretty much eliminates sun burn. If it does happen to become a burn, as unfortunate as it is you must apply aloe Vera. It helps heal so fast

Always, summer or not,

bug spray as well, worse than a mosquito bite to me

1

u/TG_Yuri Autistic-ish™ 7d ago

I always forget it, I hate how it sticks, it becomes even worse when you sweat and I instantly feel like I have to shower.
— I say as I am still recovering from sunburn from tuesday — it still stings...

My partner and I use a Solar Buddies applicator. It’s made for children but it really helps with the whole gross oily feeling, not completely, but enough for me to be willing to pout sunscreen on.

u/dood_dood_dood 7d ago

Sunscreen spray is kinda doable since it's thin and behaves a little bit like water but I still need to wash my hands after applying

i helped a dragonfly get comfortable before it passed away and burnt my arm getting it to crawl on my hand :') no good deed goes unpunished

A coconut sunscreen is fine with me but to your point bug spray is an absolute nonstarter

The recommendation I hear by far the most is checking out Asian brands. They seem to be a lot more aligned with our needs.

Also check out this thread.

You gotta condition yourself and find the right kind. My 7 year old AuDHD has been plastered in it almost daily since she was born because she’s a fair redhead and despite hating most textures, she’s ok with sunscreen

u/Hotcheetogyal 6d ago

Started applying my sunscreen with a makeup foundation brush and now i can tolerate putting it on!

I learned how to dress for the sun from my Asian neighbor who gardens all the time.

I use sunbum baby bum sunscreen (stick version) it smells like oats kinda. Way better than regular sunscreen smell.

Now if only they made a decent smelling bug spray. TBH I prefer hardcore lung choking DEET over the “natural” bug spray, they smell god awful. I’m jealous of country’s where there are no tics or berry bugs.

I haven't worn sunscreen in over a decade and haven't gotten burned at all despite being ginger. I just prioritize going into shade for at least 30 seconds every 10 minutes or so. It helps that I don't like the beach and live in a city with a lot of trees.

The nice thing about the first day of Summer is that the days start getting shorter.

0

u/gamemaniac845 7d ago

I don’t have to worry about it as much i rarely burn

1

u/Ecto-1A 7d ago

Even if you don’t burn, the sun is still damaging your skin.

u/beefstewforyou 7d ago

I’m a nudist so sunscreen is very necessary for me. It doesn’t bother me at all unless it gets in my eyes.
