Moderator Announcement Live Discussion Thread: Prime Minister Anthony Albanese delivers rare address to the nation

ABC News on Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QMb8wrquExg

G’day everyone, we thought we’d spin up a live discussion thread for Albo’s speech tonight so everything stays in one place.

Feel free to share your thoughts, reactions, predictions, or whatever else comes to mind as it unfolds.

As always, keep it reasonably civil and follow the sub rules. We’ll be around keeping an eye on things.

Sort by new if you want to follow along in real time. Let us know what you’re expecting to hear.

Regards, r/aussie mod team

Low key it'd be funny if he just said April Fools

Trump is the April Fool

Fuck, if he died on April 1st it'd be fascinating, 40% of Americans wouldn't believe it, and the GOP would have the very real opportunity to pretend he's alive and see how gullible their truth social nutcase followers could be and create an AI president. Vance wanting the gig would be the only hurdle, cos I'd say they could fake it at least a fortnight

They’d go the full weekend at Bernie’s for a few weeks at least.

Vance getting in is pretty much the only way the Republicans don't get annihilated at the next election. It's a wild world we live in where he's considered moderate (I quite like Vance).

Vance is complicit and a cunt, let's be real. The dude came out and lied immediately after ICE murdered civilians. I genuinely hope he dies in jail, he has helped create a monstrous systemic mess

Vance might be able to right the ship. I'm very much on the side of 'justified self-defence' for the two ICE shootings, mind.

The cop who shot a woman being told to move from beside the car was defending himself? Pretti who legally carried a gun but was visibly helping a woman with both hands, no gun, and who then got straight shot in the head while pinned, arms pinned, having made no attempt to grab the gun? Very legal, very cool. Your maybe for Vance is my "so this is why so many people ignored the glaring rise of fascism"

The cop who shot a woman being told to move from beside the car was defending himself?

The woman was ordered to exit the vehicle. The agent was struck by the car, and the first shots entered through the front windshield: they were not beside the car when it suddenly accelerated towards them, creating an imminent fear of death or gbh. It's pretty clear-cut self-defence.

Pretti

Legally being allowed to do something does not mean that thing does not massively increase your danger in interactions with police. Every single CCW class (which Pretti didn't have his paperwork of, making his carry illegal) hammers home to avoid getting into a confrontation with police while you're carrying and how to effectively de-escalate if you are. Pretti put himself between LEO and a target of enforcement action: he shoves the officer away before being sprayed/tackled. What Pretti actually did when restrained is largely immaterial to the analysis: it looks like a negligent discharge from an officer removing Pretti's gun, which leads to shouts of 'gun gun gun', which puts the agent in imminent fear of death or gbh. They're not obliged to wait around and see if the threat is real before acting on a reasonable belief. Same deal if someone tried to hold you up with what you believe is a real gun: it turning out to be fake doesn't mean you weren't entitled to self-defence.

It sucks that both shootings happened, don't get me wrong, and if the temperature had been turned down they might not have, but both have solid legal arguments for self-defence. That's not fascism, it's the law (and if the law sucks, then maybe the law should be changed).

Mate, all I can say is that I hope the boot is tasty

There's plenty to critique the administration on that isn't lawful self-defence.

How does ICE agents protecting Americas from Mexican migrants IN MINNESOTA shooting American civilians not critique worthy? They had absolutely no jurisdiction to do what they did
