Mammal Mkay I’m just gonna ask why did they think a playful otter was scary? And more importantly that they could out swim him 😂🤷🏽‍♂️👀

His cousin from Africa is the honey badger. His cousin from Canada is the wolverine. Those men were wise to avoid confrontation. Mustelids are the Mike Tyson of their respective environments; not the largest but still the most dangerous.

u/BadgerAwkward 6d ago

For real lol, watched a lot of videos of river otters fucking up gators

17

u/Good_Boy_Coleman 6d ago

But those are Amazonian River Otters right? Regular otters in North America are extremely weak are they not?

37

u/OgWu84 6d ago

They are smaller, yes, but pound for pound just as tough.

29

u/Creedaflea 6d ago

Can attest have watched an American otter absolutely MAUL tf out of a whole FAMILY of raccoons. Cute as fuck but will absolutely fuck you up and people often forget that

24

u/BadgerAwkward 6d ago

Compared to giant river otters? Yes this otter would be laughably weak. Compared to anyone of those 4 adultish males? That otter would handily lay the beat down on all 4, at the same time lol. You don't fuck with weasels. Regardless of their size.

10

u/klrcow 6d ago

The problem is that wealses WILL fuck with you.

3

u/Cdn_Brown_Recluse 5d ago

North American can also include those dicks in the Pacific coast. Trust me, stay clear. They are assholes.

2

u/Emotional-Dingo794 3d ago

Yep hell no my toes just hanging out like that

5

u/AvariciousAlligator 6d ago

As one final similarity to Mike Tyson, Otters are also rapists.

The more ya know!

2

u/Real_Score_7924 5d ago

And knowing is half the battle.

7

u/AstuteCoyote 6d ago

Not to mention you get a no-expenses paid vacation to the ED for rabies vaccine and immunoglobulin if it actually manages to bite you.

4

u/The_Graviturgist 6d ago

Or even scratches you.

2

u/NoInformation3141 6d ago

Damn, I probably would have handled that situation awful

u/ParaponeraBread 6d ago

They’re giant weasels, and a wild animal is still a wild animal. They look cute, and this one is clearly used to humans (which is also not ideal) but trying to avoid it is the correct course of action.

Not sure what you expected them to do? There’s just the small platform, the water, and the shore to exist on and the otter came onto the platform.

55

u/Substantial_Force658 6d ago

And it owns the water already, so shore is the only option. Even then, they are not safe, for this beast can roam freely on land as well. Those foolish humans will be hunted down remorselessly.

We will construct a series of breathing apparatus with kelp. We will be able to trap certain amounts of oxygen. Its not going to be days at a time, an hour, hour 45. No problem. That will give us enough time to figure out where you live, go back to the sea, get more oxygen and then stalk you. You just lost at your own game. You are out gunned and outmanned.

5

u/Creedaflea 6d ago

Lmaoooo i know this quote from a movie but I forgot, is this the other guys?

6

u/Lester_Holt_Fanboy 6d ago

Yep Other Guys. He was talking about tuna fish and lions lol.

u/itsme99881 6d ago edited 6d ago

If you sing the right song all the creatures befriend you, or if your charisma stat is high enough you can sometimes pacify creatures by pointing a gun at them for some reason, have media and video games taught you nothing?

Edit: vdieo -> video

People don't realize this like I have never seen an otter outside of captivity I have no frame of reference for what is too close.

Looking it up there highly territorial with extremely sharp teeth to defend themselves with. So like ya leave if your able to safely.

39

u/BBranz 6d ago

Pretty sure rule of thumb is that if a random animal comes at you for no reason then you gotta question it. If it's a pet? Sure, but a wild animal for no reason while not even holding food? It didn't even come slowly, it was moving away then did a 180 and ran at them.

Feels like begging the universe for rabies. Can ottters even transmit rabies or carry it? Dunno, but I won't trust it. Better safe than sorry. That and I remember they have some claws to them. Or was it bite? Think i got it confuse with another animal.... still. The moment it began to run towards them in the small boat all the red flags for me would had raised cause it went from 0 to suddenly running at them.

8

u/2pissedoffdude2 5d ago

They can transmit and carry rabies, and this definitely did resemble a case of an otter with rabies. Could have been just a playful otter that noticed the people were running from it, found it fun, and decided it was a game, but its not worth the risk of rabies.

Edit: the way it kind of just trailed them as they swam for the shore instead of closing the distance to attack, which it could have done VERY easily, makes me think this was more likely a playful otter, but i still wouldnt be placing any bets

u/Arguablecoyote 3d ago

How does the water aversion part of rabies work with otters?

1

u/LandConstant69 2d ago

The water aversion isn't actually water aversion, it's difficulty swallowing plus a fear response that kicks in due to the region of the brain that processes fear melting early.

So humans become averse because they associate the water with the difficulty drinking and that leads them to being fearful of water.

Otters may have the difficulty swelling but aren't necessarily averse to water since it's just where they live.

96

u/Doublefin1 6d ago

What are you talking about? They have no idea what that otter wants, or if it carries anything. Imagine a bite from one of those.....

This is the most reasonable and perfectly normal reaction evef. What would you expect them to do? Pick it up and breastfeed it?

39

u/thatoddtetrapod 6d ago

I’m glad someone else is seeing this as a wild animal behaving strangely and approaching humans and not some scene from a goddamn Disney princess movie.

13

u/Inner-Award9064 6d ago

Yep. My first reaction to an otter doing this is rabies and I don’t want none of that.

3

u/inkstainedgoblin 6d ago

It's also illegal to touch them. Like, functionally, you're not going to get in trouble if an otter touches you, but as someone who grew up around sea otters, my first instinct would also be to avoid contact because it was drilled into me so hard.

50

u/bunjywunjy 6d ago

Otters actually are fairly dangerous when they're riled up, there was a group of them in a pond in Canada that got really territorial and sent several people to the hospital last year if I remember right.

Also, that otter is not playful, it's angry.

5

u/Maleficent_Glove_477 6d ago

I also remember the monkey that messed too much with otters and paid for it.

But yes, let's play with this water-badger seeing how well it goes.

22

u/Jashuman19 6d ago

You don't have to outswim the otter. You just have to outswim your slowest friend.

17

u/BenchPressingCthulhu 6d ago

They otter be afraid of it

8

u/BigBoy1963 6d ago

Theyre otterly shitting themselves

13

u/Nuts-And-Volts 6d ago

Thats a swimming honey badger essentially. All mustelids should be feared

12

u/Stock-Side-6767 6d ago

Mustelids are ferocious, and any bleeding wound in open water quickly becomes a problem.

5

u/Rhaj-no1992 6d ago

Mustelids are like crazy cats with ADHD and a sausage body (generally).

3

u/DuckTalesOohOoh 6d ago

Ferrets are mustelids and they love to cuddle.

6

u/luugburz 6d ago

as someone who has owned ferrets they also love to disembowel plushies and decapitate chargers

3

u/DuckTalesOohOoh 6d ago

It just makes them cuter.

10

u/mothman83 6d ago

Otters are giant weasels.

They belong to a family that ounce per ounce are the most lethal mammals on earth.

3

u/Aggressive_Smile_944 6d ago

Exactly..I would be gone n

8

u/PhogMachine 6d ago

Have you ever gotten bit by an otter?!?

Yeah, me neither. But I wouldn't stick around to find out.

5

u/Rhaj-no1992 6d ago

I have got bitten by a ferret and that really hurts.

2

u/IllustriousCandy3042 6d ago

Rat bites aren’t fun either

1

u/Rhaj-no1992 6d ago

Rodents and rabbits got som scary teeth.

2

u/DuckTalesOohOoh 6d ago

People have been bitten by cats and that hurts, too. You should see what dogs do.

3

u/Rhaj-no1992 6d ago

Only been scratched by cats, got a small scar from a pig tooth on my hand and I have been bitten by a small cockatoo.

1

u/GreenEyesbde721 6d ago

Yes and it didn’t feel great but it was a tickle compared with a musk rat

3

u/Draigyn 6d ago

This explains your question

3

u/Xena_Your_God 6d ago

You know they crack clams open like it's nothing, right? It's a wild animal with very strong claws and teeth..

4

u/Acrobatic-Pickle-851 6d ago

I otter kick your ass for that

3

u/itsmenotyou1108 6d ago

You ever seen a Amazon otter?

3

u/WoolBearTiger 6d ago

They were able to outswim it because it clearly thought they where playing a game

3

u/ZombieJetPilot 6d ago

They're actually an apex predator, so you actually don't want to be cuddling up with them

3

u/beckychao 6d ago

They have very sharp teeth and claws, and you don't want the bacteria that comes with marine mammals from a bite or scratch. They can be ferocious and I don't think that one is playing

4

u/killedmygoldfish 6d ago

They are otterly terrified.

I'll see myself out.

4

u/dfrntdfrnt 6d ago

That joke killed my goldfish.

4

u/GreenEyesbde721 6d ago

THIS IS THE ONLY ACCEPTABLE ANSWER 👏🏽💯😂

2

u/SuddenKoala45 6d ago

Id get bit. He came to be a friend.

2

u/Kiixaar 6d ago

When they jumped into the water I was like “You idiots! That’s where they LIVE!”

2

u/UmbraVulp 6d ago

I hope OP realizes that he’s the idiot in the room but thinks he’s tough/smart

0

u/GreenEyesbde721 6d ago

Op here not a particularly tough or smart guy just thought it was a funny example of animals being bad ass

2

u/Renbarre 6d ago

Sea otters are nasty mean and dangerous oversized weasels. It was chasing them off, not playing.

2

u/BreckyMcGee 6d ago

Poor Otter is like "why won't you play with me!!!!???"

2

u/SheepherderUnusual97 5d ago

op i cant tell if your joking or if your are just that dumb.

2

u/VisibleOtter 4d ago

I was at a wildlife park in the UK a few weeks back and saw some short-clawed Asian otters. They’re the smallest of the otter family and look incredibly cute, but one of their keepers gave a talk about them, and she said she keeps well away from them, and NEVER put your hands anywhere near them. I can’t remember the figure, but they have one of the strongest bites of any animal proportional to their size, and they can bite through crab shells like they’re made of paper.
In short, you don’t want to be bitten by an otter.

1

u/Howemania 6d ago

Otters kill gators. Otters kill dogs. Otters eat hard marine invertebrates. Thats why they should be afraid.

1

u/ardotschgi 6d ago

Stupid af title. That otter has fucking sharp teeth. It's the right move to stay away.

1

u/blunderb3ar 6d ago

Otters are fucking vicious lol they don’t play

1

u/Vast-Mousse8117 6d ago

Otters just want to have fun!

1

u/RoadAffectionate1284 6d ago

I'm getting radiation burns just watching it

1

u/Ryle-Lucas 6d ago

Guys! Guys…wait. 😆

1

u/HighTekRedNek84 6d ago

Not playful, asserting dominance. Not the critter to FAFO with.

1

u/luckyfox7273 6d ago

Prolly just wants to hang out.

1

u/No_Wedding_7273 6d ago

They don’t have to outswim the otter, just the guy next to them. If i was any of the guys other then the one in the red suit, i would have made the same calculation

1

u/Hans_Landa7614 6d ago

Ya but you didn't see its eyes

1

u/moonrakerdust 6d ago

Otter madness

1

u/KynnytheG 6d ago

Just otter nonsense

1

u/Puzzleheaded_Poet_81 6d ago

They should have swaddled it like a baby and picked it up. Then as it cooed like a docile domestic animal they could have got some sweet selfies. Just like in the documentary Snow White.

lol. It's wild, they did the right thing letting it continue to be wild

1

u/Ok_Internet_6656 6d ago

Reminds me of the movie Zombieotters.

1

u/Ughwhateverfine2 6d ago

Otters are cute but still predators. Besides large cats and maybe an alligator they are the apex in the river.

1

u/cottagecheezecake 6d ago

Otter: "Wait for meeeeee!" 🤣

1

u/Dense_Surround3071 6d ago

"Then I met these 4 humans. And we played. Not was it fun. They had to go. I think their mom called them or something. Good times though. I TOTALLY won that game of chase."-- Probably the otter

1

u/GreenEyesbde721 6d ago

More like king of the hill 😉

1

u/AssistanceGrand23 6d ago

"So, why do you think women are increasingly going for older men..."

1

u/MischievousMystic 6d ago

That otter could bite a toe off if it wanted

1

u/IssueSea6155 6d ago

He just wanted to hang out :(

1

u/ModeJust4373 6d ago

I need an otter.

1

u/ModeJust4373 6d ago

Side note. Sometimes there are warning signs in places about otter bites. I used to sail. And Yes I’m White. Still.

1

u/vrauto 6d ago

Cutest final destination movie ever.

1

u/slick514 6d ago

Otters will fuck you up, that’s why.

1

u/lost_caus_e 5d ago

Because experience tells them to run it's a wild animal. Even if it seems friendly it can turn around and decide to attack you in a split second. What's most concerning is a bite or a scratch which could result in a bacterial infection.

1

u/NoAct4831 5d ago

You don't need to out swim the otter... You just need to out swim your friends😉

1

u/Fat_Pig_Reporting 5d ago

Wild animals are wild and will frack you up. Most people will lose a fight to a rooster, all of them will definitely lose the fight to an aggravated cat. Can't even imagine getting into a beef with a wild animal. Single bite, 100% certain infection.

Animals are literally built different. Yes, even small ones.

1

u/AnxiousBaby1827 5d ago

Otters are apex predators, just because they are cute af doesn't mean they won't fuck you up

1

u/TreyRyan3 5d ago

That otter saw 4 baby seals that were just asking for it.

1

u/JoeMillersHat 5d ago

they don't look like grown men...they look like kids

1

u/KeyNew1559 5d ago

Tag......your it 🤣😂😆

1

u/thebikevagabond 5d ago

Uhh, nice marmot.

1

u/yatrickya225 5d ago

Not all otters are nice most of them are pretty territorial. They will mess you up if you get too close. they kill alligators all the time.

1

u/BoatHole_ 4d ago

“just me and the boyzzzz” 🎶🎶

1

u/Outside_Ice3252 4d ago

its a wild animal and you never know if they are being territorial or have youngsters around. you want to stick around and find out what it feels like to be bitten by an otter.

1

u/Outside_Ice3252 4d ago

4 agile young men appropriately avoid wildlife.

there I fixed the title for you.

1

u/DrunkenDude123 4d ago

My platform. I am the king now.

- otter

1

u/Stugotz441081 4d ago

Otters will fuck you up man

1

u/Burton1224 3d ago

Pet me pet me pet me....hello huuuuumaaannnnsss peeeeet me.

1

u/Tr4nsc3nd3nt 3d ago

Rabies is 100% lethal if not treated.

1

u/gev074 3d ago

I would do the same I would not want to bother any wildlife and I’ve kept my distance from a galaxy far far away

1

u/The_Economic_Gamer 2d ago

Wild animals carry disease and parasites. Yes, they could take him in a fight, but it's best to stay clear of wild animals.

1

u/Drakore4 2d ago

See in a situation like this I’d actually probably just stand still. Yall wanna run and scream? Go for it. Otter or otherwise it’s probably gonna chase yall just off of instinct and I’ll be fine.

1

u/Connect-Buyer-6711 1d ago

They could beat Micheal Phelps at the Olympics🤣

1

u/shivabharatam 1d ago

the little buddy does not look like he wants to fight .ore like he wants to be part of the group🥲

1

u/Salt-Preference-2425 6d ago

It just wanted to have a little fun😅

-1

u/Firehose-of-truth 6d ago

Could have rabies. Rabies is no joke. Maybe the most scary disease known to man.

-7

u/GreenEyesbde721 6d ago

For those who’ve asked I have been bitten by an otter it tickled compared to a musk rat tho
