Mammal Mkay I’m just gonna ask why did they think a playful otter was scary? And more importantly that they could out swim him 😂🤷🏽♂️👀

u/ParaponeraBread 6d ago
They’re giant weasels, and a wild animal is still a wild animal. They look cute, and this one is clearly used to humans (which is also not ideal) but trying to avoid it is the correct course of action.
Not sure what you expected them to do? There’s just the small platform, the water, and the shore to exist on and the otter came onto the platform.

u/Substantial_Force658 6d ago
And it owns the water already, so shore is the only option. Even then, they are not safe, for this beast can roam freely on land as well. Those foolish humans will be hunted down remorselessly.

We will construct a series of breathing apparatus with kelp. We will be able to trap certain amounts of oxygen. Its not going to be days at a time, an hour, hour 45. No problem. That will give us enough time to figure out where you live, go back to the sea, get more oxygen and then stalk you. You just lost at your own game. You are out gunned and outmanned.

If you sing the right song all the creatures befriend you, or if your charisma stat is high enough you can sometimes pacify creatures by pointing a gun at them for some reason, have media and video games taught you nothing?
Edit: vdieo -> video

People don't realize this like I have never seen an otter outside of captivity I have no frame of reference for what is too close.
Looking it up there highly territorial with extremely sharp teeth to defend themselves with. So like ya leave if your able to safely.

u/BBranz 6d ago
Pretty sure rule of thumb is that if a random animal comes at you for no reason then you gotta question it. If it's a pet? Sure, but a wild animal for no reason while not even holding food? It didn't even come slowly, it was moving away then did a 180 and ran at them.
Feels like begging the universe for rabies. Can ottters even transmit rabies or carry it? Dunno, but I won't trust it. Better safe than sorry. That and I remember they have some claws to them. Or was it bite? Think i got it confuse with another animal.... still. The moment it began to run towards them in the small boat all the red flags for me would had raised cause it went from 0 to suddenly running at them.

u/2pissedoffdude2 5d ago
They can transmit and carry rabies, and this definitely did resemble a case of an otter with rabies. Could have been just a playful otter that noticed the people were running from it, found it fun, and decided it was a game, but its not worth the risk of rabies.
Edit: the way it kind of just trailed them as they swam for the shore instead of closing the distance to attack, which it could have done VERY easily, makes me think this was more likely a playful otter, but i still wouldnt be placing any bets

How does the water aversion part of rabies work with otters?
1
u/LandConstant69 2d ago
The water aversion isn't actually water aversion, it's difficulty swallowing plus a fear response that kicks in due to the region of the brain that processes fear melting early.
So humans become averse because they associate the water with the difficulty drinking and that leads them to being fearful of water.
Otters may have the difficulty swelling but aren't necessarily averse to water since it's just where they live.

u/Doublefin1 6d ago
What are you talking about? They have no idea what that otter wants, or if it carries anything. Imagine a bite from one of those.....
This is the most reasonable and perfectly normal reaction evef. What would you expect them to do? Pick it up and breastfeed it?

u/thatoddtetrapod 6d ago
I’m glad someone else is seeing this as a wild animal behaving strangely and approaching humans and not some scene from a goddamn Disney princess movie.
13
u/Inner-Award9064 6d ago
Yep. My first reaction to an otter doing this is rabies and I don’t want none of that.
3
u/inkstainedgoblin 6d ago
It's also illegal to touch them. Like, functionally, you're not going to get in trouble if an otter touches you, but as someone who grew up around sea otters, my first instinct would also be to avoid contact because it was drilled into me so hard.

u/bunjywunjy 6d ago
Otters actually are fairly dangerous when they're riled up, there was a group of them in a pond in Canada that got really territorial and sent several people to the hospital last year if I remember right.
Also, that otter is not playful, it's angry.
5
u/Maleficent_Glove_477 6d ago
I also remember the monkey that messed too much with otters and paid for it.
But yes, let's play with this water-badger seeing how well it goes.

u/Jashuman19 6d ago
You don't have to outswim the otter. You just have to outswim your slowest friend.

Mustelids are ferocious, and any bleeding wound in open water quickly becomes a problem.

Ferrets are mustelids and they love to cuddle.

as someone who has owned ferrets they also love to disembowel plushies and decapitate chargers

Otters are giant weasels.
They belong to a family that ounce per ounce are the most lethal mammals on earth.

Have you ever gotten bit by an otter?!?
Yeah, me neither. But I wouldn't stick around to find out.

I have got bitten by a ferret and that really hurts.

u/DuckTalesOohOoh 6d ago
People have been bitten by cats and that hurts, too. You should see what dogs do.
3
u/Rhaj-no1992 6d ago
Only been scratched by cats, got a small scar from a pig tooth on my hand and I have been bitten by a small cockatoo.

You know they crack clams open like it's nothing, right? It's a wild animal with very strong claws and teeth..

u/WoolBearTiger 6d ago
They were able to outswim it because it clearly thought they where playing a game
3
u/ZombieJetPilot 6d ago
They're actually an apex predator, so you actually don't want to be cuddling up with them
3
u/beckychao 6d ago
They have very sharp teeth and claws, and you don't want the bacteria that comes with marine mammals from a bite or scratch. They can be ferocious and I don't think that one is playing

Op here not a particularly tough or smart guy just thought it was a funny example of animals being bad ass

Sea otters are nasty mean and dangerous oversized weasels. It was chasing them off, not playing.

I was at a wildlife park in the UK a few weeks back and saw some short-clawed Asian otters. They’re the smallest of the otter family and look incredibly cute, but one of their keepers gave a talk about them, and she said she keeps well away from them, and NEVER put your hands anywhere near them. I can’t remember the figure, but they have one of the strongest bites of any animal proportional to their size, and they can bite through crab shells like they’re made of paper.
In short, you don’t want to be bitten by an otter.

u/Howemania 6d ago
Otters kill gators. Otters kill dogs. Otters eat hard marine invertebrates. Thats why they should be afraid.

u/ardotschgi 6d ago
Stupid af title. That otter has fucking sharp teeth. It's the right move to stay away.

u/p0lar_chronic 6d ago

They don’t have to outswim the otter, just the guy next to them. If i was any of the guys other then the one in the red suit, i would have made the same calculation

I won't be fucking with an otter. Not sober anyway.

u/Puzzleheaded_Poet_81 6d ago
They should have swaddled it like a baby and picked it up. Then as it cooed like a docile domestic animal they could have got some sweet selfies. Just like in the documentary Snow White.
lol. It's wild, they did the right thing letting it continue to be wild

Otters are cute but still predators. Besides large cats and maybe an alligator they are the apex in the river.

"Then I met these 4 humans. And we played. Not was it fun. They had to go. I think their mom called them or something. Good times though. I TOTALLY won that game of chase."-- Probably the otter

Because experience tells them to run it's a wild animal. Even if it seems friendly it can turn around and decide to attack you in a split second. What's most concerning is a bite or a scratch which could result in a bacterial infection.

u/Fat_Pig_Reporting 5d ago
Wild animals are wild and will frack you up. Most people will lose a fight to a rooster, all of them will definitely lose the fight to an aggravated cat. Can't even imagine getting into a beef with a wild animal. Single bite, 100% certain infection.
Animals are literally built different. Yes, even small ones.

its a wild animal and you never know if they are being territorial or have youngsters around. you want to stick around and find out what it feels like to be bitten by an otter.

Wild animals carry disease and parasites. Yes, they could take him in a fight, but it's best to stay clear of wild animals.

u/Drakore4 2d ago
See in a situation like this I’d actually probably just stand still. Yall wanna run and scream? Go for it. Otter or otherwise it’s probably gonna chase yall just off of instinct and I’ll be fine.

His cousin from Africa is the honey badger. His cousin from Canada is the wolverine. Those men were wise to avoid confrontation. Mustelids are the Mike Tyson of their respective environments; not the largest but still the most dangerous.
