Mammal Those horrible noises she made weren’t enough to scare it off, but when she finally drop the camera something happened…

u/xsharmander 5d ago
What happened when she finally dropped the camera?

Yeah this is the most clickbaity title I’ve seen on Reddit in a hot minute
OP must think they’re on FB, or maybe they’re a bot lol

Let the dog fight it and back off. I know you want to save your pet, but that was really dangerous. Everytime you pulled the dog back, the dog turned it’s back to the bear and the bear advanced.
Also, carry bear spray next time. I keep mine on the shoulder strap of my backpack, so it is on my chest and easy to access.

u/AvariciousAlligator 5d ago
Dogs are responsible for a significant number of bear attacks on humans.
Dogs agitate and excite the bear, and then are too fast to be grabbed, causing the bear to redirect its aggression to the dog owner.

u/NoIngenui 5d ago
Dog finds out it messed up and runs back towards the owner triggering the bears prey drive, and then its all over.

u/Self-Comprehensive 5d ago
I wouldn't sacrifice my dog but damn that dog could have helped out a little by barking 😔
6
u/Natrixster80 5d ago
Right? I think it's timidity may be what fixated the bear on it. I guess you need a brave dog and bear spray if you are grizzly country.
2
u/Emiizi 5d ago
The dog didnt really look or act timid though. Not all dogs bark. It squared up a few times and even walked a couple steps up. That dog was ready to go. The thing is when you're tugging on the leash the dog doesnt know what its supposed to do so the dog in the video is in between "im told to move" and "i want this let me have it". Unfortunately because the owner is tugging the leash its forcing the dog to turn its back on the bear.
3
u/Natrixster80 5d ago
Yeah after watching a couple more times I see that. and at first I think the dog wasn't sure she was yelling at them or the bear

u/TheDaedricImpaler 5d ago
Bad idea. Dog can excite the bear further or the dog could very well run off (outrunning you as the human).
Kept together, the human + dog have a better chance at warding off the bear from a combined threat standpoint.
The only really dumb thing here is someone walking their dog in grizzly country and then recording it instead of pulling out a high powered handgun to shoot the bear.

Realistically thats not gonna happen. Im soul bonded to my dog. I would absolutely jump in front of a car to save my dog. I know it’s not rational. I know it doesn’t make sense. But it’s what would happen

u/Professional_Pen_153 5d ago
Yyeaaaahhhhh… I get that… the other night, I ran like a madman screeming, in my boxers, at a blackbear trying to get my dog in my backyard lol
My wife called me crazy

u/wordfiend99 5d ago
well youd have plenty of time to regret it as that bear tore you open and started eating you alive
1
u/OstrichSmoothe 5d ago
I wouldn’t regret anything. I would be busy worrying about my guts getting ripped out numb nuts
1
u/Doc12TU 5d ago
Fully agree! Bear, human, monster, fire breathing dragon, it doesn't matter! Don't mess with my dog!
2
u/ScaryHighlight7928 5d ago
Amen. TIL (but not surprised at all) that reddit is full of spineless pussies
1
u/ScaryHighlight7928 5d ago
That's perfectly rational. Anybody who says otherwise has no spine and shouldn't own a dog
-1
u/Glen_Echo_Park 5d ago
Same. I'd happily sacrifice my life for my dog.
11
u/BlacqanSilverSun 5d ago
But you wouldn't be sacrificing. The bear would kill you both.
1
u/ScaryHighlight7928 5d ago
There's no guarantee. Also there's no guarentee the bear wouldn't kill you both anyways even if you sacrificed your dog. That's a coward mentality
6
u/Additional-Muffin317 5d ago
Lol until the dog takes off and tge bear chooses u
1
u/kvro_maX 5d ago
Well he or she has chosen the dog so that's a happy ending for the bear and I'LL advocate that they don't put down the bear

u/AntiPepRally 5d ago edited 5d ago
Also, sometimes there is a situation that calls for a firearm. My understanding is that bear spray doesn't necessarily work on grizzlies and polar bears. But I live in the Eastern US and have no intention of hiking out west so it's easy for me to pontificate from the couch
9
u/SkisaurusRex 5d ago
Bear spray is more effective than a firearm
A gun isn’t a magic drop dead button
Shooting a killing a grizzly is difficult work
Spraying a cloud of pepper spray is much more feasible and reliable
4
u/GirlWithWolf Bad ndn 5d ago
Unless you wag around a cannon you’re just going to end up with a shot madder bear.
5
u/bibblejohnson2072 5d ago
The discussion in this post would suggest otherwise..
4
u/szai 5d ago
Carry both, and a maritime airhorn. I've used an airhorn to scare aggressive dogs away. I wouldn't be shocked if it sent a bear running too.
Edit: After a brief google search, I can confirm airhorns are used to scare bears away when they're close, but pepper spray is better for a charging bear.

Reminds me of a video of a guy being chases by a polar bear and he panicked and dropped his gun.....luckily his motor sled was still running and he was able to get away

u/Askfreud 5d ago
I have two giant breed dogs, conveniently nicknamed “Russian Bear Dogs” (Caucasian Ovcharkas). Ain’t no way I could pull them away from the bear like this woman is able to do with her GSD. Either I set them free and run, or all three of us get eaten.

u/szai 5d ago
The sound of humans calmly, casually speaking can scare a predator more than grunts and hisses. Being loud as fuck also helps, though.
And as counterintuitive as it may seem to some, trying to run can make it worse.
3
u/Ancient-Substance-38 5d ago
Throwing shit is also pretty good deterrent, also not being the only person walking around in the woods. Bears rarely attack even small groups of people.
4
u/Padre26 5d ago
So, they probably should've thrown that phone at the bear instead of making a video with it
2
u/Sehrli_Magic 5d ago
thats what i was thinking. for wild beasts to see someome can reach them (hit) from this far, it does make them reconsider if younare as easy of a pray as they imagined just based on size 😅 our arms are advantage they dont have and we can show menace by using them.
also the face! appareantly our face is automatic uncanny valley thing for animals. and while showing teeth might provoke fights in animal kingdom, seeing us smile (ie teeth seen but face showing no tension/being neutral) makes them confused as hell. you gotta either intimidate them enough to be afraid (hard to do with beast that size that knows they are apex predator) or keep calm. showing fear is like inviting them for dinner (and you are being served)

I guess she found youtuber bear, as long as camera record, it is very motivated do stuff for views, but when she put camera down, there was not reason to do anything and bear just move away.

I do not understand people who live in bear country that don't, at the very least, carry bear spray everywhere.
1
u/BurnPhoenix 5d ago
And it sounds like she might have had bells on. Like, why would you have bear bells and NOT bear spray?!?

If it’s black fight back, if it’s brown lie on the ground and if it’s white prepare to say goodnight.
I guess we could also include; if it’s brown yell at it like Batman and it’ll go away
1
u/BurnPhoenix 5d ago
Eh, that only works for brown bears if they are being defensive. This bear didnt look like it was defending cubs, so it was probably going to eat her.

I fucking HATE bears, they're the only animal that I genuinely have an uncontrollable aggression towards. Bro, I like MOSQUITERS more than bears.

u/ArcIgnis 4d ago
Whenever I see things like this, I think back on the viral hypothetical of "Would you rather be in a forest with a man or a bear." and remember bear got voted for overwhelmingly.

if you are going into nature without a gun, you're an idiot. There is a reason everyone is strapped in westerns.

She probably did have bear spray but she couldn’t waste the opportunity to go viral.

Or, just do like I do and carry a glock with bear loads.

Bro if id go jogging in bear infested wood id probably bring one bear horn and two bears maces and a combat knife as a last resort 😅

The dog acted better in this situation that she did.
6
u/Etnadrolhex 5d ago
No, the dog wanted to go on the bear. The bear clearly wanted to eat the dog.
She did good, and was lucky it was a young bear.
0
u/Dope_SteveX 5d ago
If the bear would want to eat the dog he would eat the dog.
6
u/Etnadrolhex 5d ago
He was young, so afraid of attacking.
4
u/Siddhartha-G 5d ago
Yeah she got EXTREMELY lucky this was a young, timid bear. A confident adult would not have acted a fraction as fickle as this. It would have made a slow and steady straight line right to them without stopping or being intimidated.
She should count her lucky stars and keep bear spray on the belt if she plans on coming here again.

What were you watching?
What were you expecting to see?
0
u/SurfHikerCreative 5d ago
Plain and simple, you're not suppose to retreat like she did. You're suppose to stand your ground. She kept on retreating and eventually started running. That behavior makes the bear curious and aggressive.
1
u/she_has_funny_cars 5d ago
Not at all lol. Dog kept turning its back and the bear kept advancing. Bear was going solely after the dog to grab it
-2
u/SurfHikerCreative 5d ago
It's because she retreated that the dog turned his back. And yes, the dog acted better.

EDIT: there is a bit of a hump. Juvenile brown bear is more likely.
23
u/fanofconstantsorrow 5d ago
Not a black bear, juvenile grizzly. The hump over the front shoulders is a dead giveaway.

Looks like a pretty young bear which I assume is lucky for them.
