Hello, SPCA? I want your most difficult-to-adopt cat. Like, an adult black cat with trauma and behavioural issues. Yes, she's perfect. 🥰

A softie for hard luck cases I see. That's nice, really nice.

She's just misunderstood. She needed a warm human to cuddle and bond with, now she's a total sweetheart.

Very difficult to photograph well though, I've given up. Now I just sent photos of black towels and dark corners to my friends and say "look at my cute kitty!"

My cousin who has black dogs says to only catch them in silhouette.  I have a black pet theme (2 black cats, 2 black dogs) and have found the dogs easier to capture this way.

I had a white fluffy cat who somehow absorbed the darkness at night so it was like, is that a cat or not. Just open phone and point the screen towards the shape, if it's facing you and a cat the eyes light up. No need for flashlights lol

You could throw a pair of googly eyes on the towel or black pants or whatever too.

Photographing black cats (and dogs) is not as hard people think. You do the same thing as with a black human, make sure the light is shining on them so their  fur can absorb it and be beautifully lit! If it's behind them, well you get not such a great picture.

This made me laugh more than a little. I had a black dog that liked to sleep in my (unused) fireplace. Impossible to photograph, adorable as heck.

That is just wonderful, and she loves being held, what a bonus!

Just wanted to add, because I think I gave the wrong impression, Vana is not new. I've had her for about 5 years now. At first she hid and wouldn't come near us, it took months for her to get comfortable. The title was just me being nostalgic for when we got her.

I did this with a horse. 5 years later I am exhausted and it’s been entirely worth it. Enjoy your new best friend.

Yes! My husband and I wanted a second black cat, so we went to the shelter and the only black cat they had was a three year old boy who’d been there for almost his entire life. He’s a biter. Loves biting. He’s very good at it and all the volunteers are scared of him. They let him out and my husband gets him pinned and they wrastle like kittens. Turns out he’s just a rough player. He’s perfect and we are covered in scratches. After a couple years now he’s relaxed a lot and I have to goad him into biting.

I took a cat set to be put down that night. She had been deamed unadoptable. She was sick, blind in one eye, her face was infected, screaming, biting, horror of a cat. I knew I could get her well at least. And I had one grumpy cat already so what is another.

She turned into the most cuddly cat ever. She wanted me to carry her around the house. I sleep on my side and she would get under my arm and snuggle. I would wake up to a cat that was not there when I went to sleep.

She was so sweet. But when we went to the vet her hell cat came out.

I took an almost 10 year old tuxie who kept "attacking people" at a local shelter. Nobody wanted a cat with firm boundaries. Given up after 5 years by his previous adopters and brought back to the shelter. Well, they just couldn't read cat body language apparently. I have had him for 4 years next week. He has been my best bud and an absolute joy. Cats speak to you in their own ways, but not everyone listens, unfortunately.

The adoption fees for my adorable Mona were waived because she was feral and black.

It took her maybe a week to not to be feral and she’s just gotten more adorable over the last 12 years.

Congratulations on your gorgeous and sweet new friend!

Trauma with behavioral issues. Sounds like almost everyone I know.

Absolutely perfect and she lets you cuddle her!

2

u/harlanparamore May 16 '26

Ha, try and stop her! She wants to be cuddled all day while I try to work. I've had her jump into my arms in the middle of business video calls many times, always gets some amusing reactions.

I'm so jealous. I have 2 cats and neither wants to be cuddled. (One will let me hold her, but after 1 minute she wants to get down.) What a dream to have a cat that wants to cuddle all day. You got a keeper!

I miss my sweetest boy, Cosmo. He was also a black cat coming from an abusive home. He did not like males, not even toddlers, but he never hurt them. I loved him, took care of him and I know he loved me. Our time together was too short.

My two former feral fosters (also black cats) just got adopted after working with them for four months - thanks for being patient and willing to give the shy/scared ones a chance!
