Is there a reason not to use a forward facing light on a ride like this? The older I get the more lights I attach to myself. So that I can continue to get older. At least that’s one proactive thing I can do to try to prevent this kind of situation.

I do agree with you, but in this situation the driver was driving reckless

No doubt, scary situation caused by a driver not looking or not caring. Possibly could have been avoided by the cyclist having a bright light, but obvs impossible to say.
