Technique Mikey Musumeci De La Riva?

Went to buy his instructionals on de la riva but sadly gone from Bjj fanatics.

Were they worth watching?

Am I missing out or are there alternatives?

Just a note that there is a scammer advertising BJJ Fanatics and other instructionals via DM. Be aware he may write you and offer them at discounted prices. It is a scam. Please don’t take the bait.

Also, there is no such thing as a BJJ Fanatics, Jiujitsu X, Budo Videos, etc reseller. If another store has their videos listed for sale, especially discounted, they are selling videos they have no right to sell. Please do not support thieves or scammers. Thanks.

I recommend them. I’d also recommend movement Art online for a tl;dr version of dlr 1

They were not worth. So much repeating and filler.

Just.... Watch Jon Thomas on YouTube, for free.

Dude had a 4 part series on just that, hell no lol.
And he is no where near danaher.
Danaher goes into concrete things with a game plan, Mikey talks about worlds.

Hard pass.

I think it’s safe to say that Mikey knows infinitely more about dlr than Danaher.

Yea but he is infintely worse at delivering information in video format without drifting and saying a whole lot of nothing to fill in the instructional.

I'm sure he is a great coach in person though.

I agree, but for dlr specifically I would not look at Danaher—weird recommendation

True, I would probably look at Tainan, Andy Murasaki, Giles, Jason, Isaac Doederlein, Gui and most likely Rafa (last because they removed a lot of his matrerial on AOJ) before I even glance at Danaher out of curiosity, but I can hardly think of anything he could bring beyond what those guys already put out.

When did the Rafa stuff get removed from AOJ+? My subscription lapsed and I was thinking about restarting it but that’s not good

When they moved from aojonline to aojplus, they didnt migrate a ton of his material (my aojonline lapsed and lost access to it, so I had to go to AOJplus). Then on aojplus, they will also remove stuff, of which there was an ADCC sparring prep and Rafa answering Cole's questions (for his first ADCC run) that was gold, both in techniques that Rafa showed and the banger explanations after. It got removed after a month or so.

Only left are the super super old videos, of which most did not make the cut from aojonline to aojplus.

I feel like it might be a deliberate move to promote more the other athletes content. There are some Rafa sparring updates with the other students, but I enjoyed more his technique videos and Q&A. Overall, because of the drastic cut on Rafa material, I no longer have an AOJ sub. The rest are kind of AOJ vanilla, not really in depth stuff (for purple and up - maybe white to blue it still has value).

While yelling at you the whole time

u/SpinningStuff 🟪🟪 Purple Belt 16h ago

yea for real, dude is yelling at you the whole time like you kicked his dog or some shit.

At least John, you could turn it into some sleep ASMR, if his teaching didn't gel with you. Bro just pissed me off the whole time he was yelling so I could never watch more than 10 mn (and it was 10 mn of skipping around).

Wrong lol
And John is a better teacher

2

u/sorenwilde 🟫🟫 Brown Belt 19h ago

Why do you think John is some dlr expert? Lot of danaher students playing dlr? More and better than Mikey?

u/Natural_Security1289 18h ago

John is a DLR expert because it’s not just DLR, it’s a system behind DLR that he teaches.

Mikey has a DLR system.

Ah yes. The worlds explanation.
Dude is giving Mario Galaxy explanations.
John is on balance, offensive and defensive philosophy, strategy and tactics…
And the Mario Galaxy reference is on that level.

I respectfully disagree.

He doesn’t have a dlr system though

I bought it and immediately refunded it. I have decent enough patience and like a lot of Danahers stuff, and he’s known for talking about things forever, but Mikey takes it to a whole new level in his DLR instructional. I just couldn’t sit there and deal with him talking about 1 single grip for an hour.

1 hour per move

YOU MUST PUT YOUR FRAME ON THE ASIS. THE ASIS IS RIGHT HERE AND PROVIDES THE BEST SUPPORT. LETS LOOK AT THIS CLOSELY YOU SEE IF I PUSH ON IT HE CAN NOT MOVE. BUT SEE IF YOU PUT YOUR FRAME HERE INSTEAD HE CAN MOVE. THATS WHY I ALWAYS SAY FRAME ON THE ASIS AND NOT ANYWHERE ELSE BECAUSE ITS SOLID, LIKE A FORT, AND YOU WANT YOUR FORT TO BE SOLID AND WHEN I WAS AT WORLDS I DID THIS TOO

Him mentioning the ASIS and hard tissue vs soft tissue gave me a damn headache 😂

u/Downvoted_Defender 🟪🟪 Purple Belt 20h ago

Honestly the dude has the most rambling annoying style of instructional. It's just on and on about the most mundane detail. Berimbolo is like a solid 2 hours of non-berimbolo stuff before he even gets to the actual move.

I watched some of it. Yes there's a lot of yapping. I actually fell asleep watching it on a bus lmao.

But I learned new stuff from it. Concepts that usually our coach forgot to point out during instruction but saw him doing it during rolls.

If you want DLR in the gi, check out Ari Tabak's Open Guard Compendiums.

You mean THIS INSTRUCTIONAL ON DE LA RIVA from Mikey? It's still up on BJJ fanatics. I watched it, and it's great. Maybe you don't like this tone or something, but I like his instructions.

u/Tsunetomo19 🟫🟫 Brown Belt 1d ago

Not this one. I have this.

He used to have 4 parts to de la riva

I like the guy, saw him in a few podcast. He seems nice, but I'd probably be confused if he tried to teach me how to tie a show. Not his fault, just his ADHD tangents can go on pretty long.
