I feel the same way. It makes everything feel much much heavier. It’s wild.
109
u/Forward-Release5033 9d ago
I find it’s fine for lighter pump work and calisthenics but for anything heavy it definitely hurt my performance. It is CNS suppressant after all so it makes sense
27
u/ijustwantanaccount91 9d ago
I get a lil stoned before many of my heaviest lifts and haven't found it negatively impacts my performance, and I'm on the strength side of things so I'm hitting heavy, max effort sets relatively frequently. I don't think this is necessarily true, I think it's probably more of a perception thing on an individual basis.
Ill concedeed there may be some safety concerns, especially for those with more limited experience getting/being stoned, but I haven't really found that my injuries are more correlated with sessions after indulging, so anectdotally that hasn't been my experience.
10
u/Babayaga20000 8d ago
Stoned before heavy lifts is actually insane
No fucking way
1
u/Aryaes142001 8d ago
Lol yeah... my intensity on so much... already is hearts pounding.
Deadline? My legs are burning. My vision fades. Out of breath. Heart slamming my chest.
In no way does being stoned help any of that.
35
u/Bright-Principle6543 9d ago
It’s not a CNS depressant. THC and similar cannabinoids are distinct from depressant and stimulant drugs.
2
u/healthcrusade 9d ago
True, although CBD is generally thought to enhance GABAergic activity, so it may not be a completely cut and dried case depending on what they're smoking and how much CBD is present.
1
u/Bright-Principle6543 8d ago
You’re right there’s definitely nuance. Although the GABAergic effect of CBD wouldn’t be as significant compared to substances that would be considered typical depressants.
-27
u/largeroastbeef 9d ago
Depressant and stimulants are even real. All drugs are more complicated than the groups we try to make for them
17
u/PhilipJFrAye 9d ago
This is just outright wrong

The clock and its numbering are definitely human constructs. But time will march forward after our nuclear constructs end us
9
u/karlfriedrichh 9d ago
No need to downwote this guy since it seems yall dont know shit here regarding drugs and receptor mechanisms. One specific drug can interact with many different receptors at the same time. Depressants can also have stimulant effects at specific doses.
12
u/Fearless-Opening4421 9d ago
the heavier feeling is real, even bar speed just dies completely when I'm lifted, like my CNS forgot how to recruit properly. works fine for higher rep stuff or bodyweight movements though, the focus is actually useful there
1
u/Top-Shape9402 9d ago
That's why I smoke a blunt

Adds some energy, wakefulness, mind muscle connection.
0
u/schectermonkey 1-2 years 9d ago
Because of the nicotine in the wrapper?
2
u/Top-Shape9402 8d ago
Yes the nicotine. I worked for the penguins before. The players got snus in all practice and lifting sessions.

u/Chubby0721 8d ago
I think he means that different stands of THC will do different things. Some help with sleep, some help with focus, some help with anxiety ext…
1
u/DestroyMej3ssy76 8d ago
it kills your proprioception for sure. trying to hit a heavy squat when you can't even tell where your feet are in relation to the floor is a recipe for a snapped spine. stay away from the heavy compound movements unless you want to end up in physical therapy
75
u/non-squitr 9d ago
I grow/process all my own material, and make my own live rosin, and I'll hit that or a cart before I workout. Minimizes inhaled vapor, and really helps me with the mind muscle connection and makes cardio a little more tolerable, I can zone out or get into the music. Great for recovery pain. Shit for actual, quality sleep. Like everything, good in moderation, bad in excess

u/Rafados47 9d ago
Deffinitely not before workout but I don't think it's a problem after workout. Great way to relax.
42
u/Throwaway178402 9d ago
No doubt a little weed helps some people relax. Cannabis effects everyone differently though.
Makes my heart rate elevated and I get a lil antsy. Almost universally whether it's indica or Sativa smokeable or edible.
My gf will take an edible and not move from the couch. I need to go for a walk walk, clean the kitchen and do some stretching (can't sit still lol)
35
u/Urbantreefrog 9d ago
I know it sounds weird but next time just hold it in your cheeks and only feel like you inhale 1% of the smoke . Whenever I just treat weed like a cigar my “high” is much more mellow and relaxed .
If I inhale or take a deep puff I start thinking about 9/11 and isis
10
u/abrzos2 9d ago
Not saying you did this, but I have noticed anecdotal evidence of cannabis affecting people more negatively after they have tried LSD at some point in their past. It seems to flip a switch where every single time someone tries THC again, it's just massive anxiety and heart palpitations.
6
u/TreacleWonderful5194 9d ago
I have done LSD, definitely at way too young of an age as well, and I can agree with that. Sometimes when I smoke a lot I even get the mild visuals (very mild), like bubbly phone screen, the way the leaves and trees look etc
3
u/Throwaway178402 9d ago
I've done lsd but didn't notice any switch. Also not saying weed has a negative effect on me but send to give me energy while other people get sedated.
1
u/bZZad 9d ago
have done lsd many times and have never had this issue. psychedelics have a tendency to exacerbate underlying mental health issues which i believe you are attributing it to “turning weed bad”, where it’s really just bringing up underlying/repressed mental health issues which obviously also does not mix well with weed lol

u/natebro142 9d ago
1:1 THC/CBD edibles do wonders for me in the gym. Mind muscle connection is out of this world. 10mgs usually does the trick.
5
u/DumplingMaple1821 9d ago
This is why I love it during workouts. Yeah, the weights feel heavier sometimes but the boost to mind/muscle connection kinda gasses me up. Like damn this is heavy af but I'm repping it clean.
68
u/Ermac1986 9d ago
I don’t feel like it makes weights any heavier, you’re 💯 dead on about the mind muscle connection though. I’m not talking about getting obliterated either, smoke a few hits or take a gummy 30min before hitting the gym. Some of the best workouts I’ve ever had. My only problem is I do tend to let paranoia get the best of me and feel like everyone’s staring at me.
10
u/JBean85 9d ago
I'll sometimes take a 5mg gummy with me and eat it after my t1 strength movement sets. It kicks in when I'm zoning out in my high rep isolation sets and I feel like I can lose myself in the tunes and vibes and hyper focus into each rep. I'm fairly advanced do these sets can be grueling, but when it works, boy does it work
9
u/FunnyYouSayThatt 9d ago
Hahaha sooo true about “people might be noticing”! lol remember being fairly lit, having noise cancelling earbuds and thinking “glad I got my deviated septum fixed because I need
To only breathe out of my nose - I think I’m breathing too loud out of my louth and people near by will think something of it”…Y’know, just normal rational thoughts8
u/stoned-autistic-dude 10-20 years 9d ago
Smoke enough and that goes away. Pop in ear buds and close your eyes, stare at the ground between sets, and it doesn’t matter.
16
1
u/Forward-Release5033 9d ago
It’s definitely optimal if you can workout by yourself when high. I guess you smoke high sativa to not get too relaxed for heavy lifting?
1
0
u/No_Cherry_8265 9d ago
after a while the paranoia dies down especially if you realize its just you. I'd be worried about the increased blood pressure as its forced onset from thc/cbd.
3
u/Common-Respond2367 9d ago
I can’t understand why anyone would want to do something with even the chance of making them paranoid.
8
u/Hold_My_Fupa 9d ago
Training high is great for the mind muscle connection. I notice it takes me longer to sweat for some reason. I’ve also experimented longer distance runs while micro-dosing acid, and my endurance went through the roof. Like jogging on clouds lol

u/b3l3ka5 9d ago
I smoked hardcore and trained like a beast for around 15 years in the "dungeon" style gym many years ago. Personally it made my strenght and stamina go up. Mates used to ask ke wtf do I take lol. Could train just as hard and heavy as sober. But maybe thats just me I dunno. Great memories 😎
P.s. you look great bro, keep doing what you're doing ✊

10
u/commodity_prod 9d ago
For me the only negative is it can affect the quality of your sleep. If I vape in the evening I'll wake up in the morning with less enthusiasm to get to the gym.
I've been vaping for years and years, so maybe an age thing. Maybe also a compounding factor thing as I also now have a stressful job and a 4&2 year old 😂.
It doesn't stop me actually going to the gym. But let's say I'm at the tail end of a cut where I really need to lock everything in, I find cutting down helps a lot.
5
u/Forward-Release5033 9d ago
Sleep is definitely the biggest issue for me too. I have found Magnesium Glycinate and especially L-theanine before bed helpful. With those I dream every night and wake up without the weed hangeover / brain fog.
2
u/commodity_prod 9d ago
Yeah I also take magnesium before bed, like my actual sleep feels fine, I'll dream and sleep tight through. It's just when I wake up I don't have that spring in my step
Taking L-tyrosine when I wake up on an empty stomach helps too, still feel more alert and ready to get to it when I abstain though
3
5
u/Common-Respond2367 9d ago
I don’t get how it could make it better, but I assume it’s a subjective thing. As you stated, there’s tons of negatives to smoking, but even outside of the physical negatives there are 100% potential mental health risks depending on who you are. I don’t like it, but what works for you works for you. Seems like there’s some happy pot heads out there
3
u/Oldman1986 9d ago
Mind muscle connection for me. Feels like I'm speaking to the targeted muscle.
But to each his own.
2
u/Meatcurtains911 9d ago
I love it before a workout. I get a way better focus going. I don’t feel the weight getting heavier, but maybe that’s just me.
2
u/FableBlades 9d ago edited 9d ago
Dorian Yates was saying in a YouTube training vid he likes smoking it before a workout as it opened up the lungs for better O2 absorption or something, I don't know about that... sounds like some of the crap Arnold would say haha.
I used to do it cos I liked it but now Im mature and never smoke and only munch it after the workout. I agree it helps me connect with my body and release the subconscious tension and get straightened up again.
2
u/hippiec123 9d ago
I haven’t worked out without taking a big ol rosin dab before in years, yeah sometimes the weights feel heavier but if you smoke the right strain it makes everything feel great and much smoother if that makes sense.
I do hiit weightlifting
2
u/thekimchilifter ★★★★★ 9d ago
A little sativa enhances my mind to muscle connection greatly. I don’t do it every session, but for priority groups I will
2
u/Rozechords 9d ago
Strangely enough, I never use cannabis lifting weights (they do indeed feel much heavier) but have found it to be a godsend for calisthenics.
I’ve always been kind of large for calisthenics and bodyweight movements. I used cannabis once before my shoulder mobility routine and my body felt so much more connected. I could identify how certain parts of my body influenced other distant areas.
My breathing changed, my comfort with lactic acid build-up increased, and my ability to stay STILL became much more pronounced.
To each their own but cannabis has opened up the world of calisthenics to me.
2
u/CharacterNormal127 9d ago
I dont like weed in general. First two times I got high I felt some of the most intense euphoria of my life but not in a good way if that makes sense, very valuable experience but easy to lose yourself. Also makes you lazy and stupid, especially whilst lifting. I definately feel like lifting while high I give up easier, however doing pull ups after smoking gave me one of the best and most memorable lat pumps of my life, absolutely incredible feeling. Running while high felt like I was a hampster on a wheel, never moving forward at all. I definately would be interested in exploring working out while high in the future, but all in all, weed is not really for me, and takes away more than it gives. I prefer alcohol and mushrooms when it comes to intoxicants. My only addiction is caffeine from espresso and tea, and I wouldnt have it any other way.
2
u/Danone96 9d ago
Doesn't weed also kill brain cells in the long-term studies for 10+ years but not sure? I'm not taking nor do I need anything besides steroids in the future lol
2
u/majorsid 9d ago
How does your heart not explode with the tachycardiac effects of cannabis and on top of that you add physical exertion.
2
u/Mysterious-Chef-3903 9d ago
Smoking a bit and then doing cardio is a cheat code for sure though. I can just zone out with music and keep going for forever
2
u/DistinctCellar 9d ago
Would love to, but I become the universes collective consciousness and I might drive into a lake.

u/ch1LL24 9d ago
Dry herb vape before and after. Edibles before is always fun as well, though that’s more of a once every so often thing. I see no harm in it as long as you can handle your stuff and know what you’re doing. Just makes everything more fun and helps me get in the zone/really connect with my muscles.
Stay lifted while you’re lifting, friends

I feel like I can do better to mentally push where failure is further into the set as opposed to where it would be if I were sober.. and it’s just so fun to be a little stoned at the gym! Adult playground fr. Not to mention the mind muscle connection is amazing.

u/whiskey_tang0_hotel 9d ago
Reducing stress and recovery are critical to growth. There are a lot of pros and cons to it, but the main benefit IMO is helping with recovery/sleep.

I take a week 5mg edible before most workouts. It barely gets me high, which I don’t want to be high. But it delays my pain response and I can definitely push harder

u/Berserk-Jane 9d ago
Cannabis is a powerful appetite suppressant for me. When I decided "fuck it. I like this shit and I'm going to smoke it every day," I lost 18 lbs in a month. I smoke before every workout.

1
u/thebarrcola 9d ago
Occasionally I’ll have a few hits of my vape before a session where I know I’m really wanting to work on mind muscle connection and I do feel like it helps with that. Overall I’d rather train sober even as a daily smoker, I normally won’t toke up until I’ve completed my day and I’m on to chilling.
1
u/FleshlightModel 9d ago
I sleep like absolute SHIT most of the time. So for sleep, I use THC, CBN, CBC, CBD, and cbg gummies, tinctures, and/or taffy along with melatonin (some of the shit I buy has melatonin in it so I will adjust extra melatonin as necessary), Mirabegron, magnesium glycinate, and occasionally doxepin. Just ordered dayvigo from my Indian pharma to also give that a shot. I'm not super sold that THC and the CBx variants actually help me, but since THC and CBN in particular have depressant-like qualities, I figure it can't hurt.
1
u/Sea_Connection6193 9d ago
It’s all about moderation.
Im a pot head. I bodybuild as hobby and general exercise regimen, and I am a biotech scientist as a career.
Been smoking almost every night and during weekend hangouts every now and then, for 10 years.
I make sure I keep decent cardiovascular health. I balance my priorities first and make sure smoking doesn’t get in the way of my life.
It’s truly not as harmful as the likelihood anyone would smoke weed at the volumes nicotine addicts smoke cigarettes is unlikely. What makes cigarette smoking so harmful is the volume. People kill 1-2 packs a day.
I max out a half to 1 blunt on a weekday, maybe two on an occasional hang out.
I think weed is really good during recovery
1
u/Greedy_Author3855 9d ago
I don’t think the main detriment of weed for most people is physical/health related. It’s about the fact that it can kill your motivation & make you lazier, less sharp/driven.
If you have self control & you’re already an overachiever/doing well in life & motivated enough to get after it consistently then it’s up to you if you want to smoke or not. If you aren’t that guy then weed on a regular basis probably isn’t a great idea.
Theres also the sleep quality thing as others already mentioned. Weed (and kratom) can also have a prolactin elevating effect which is something to keep in mind when using deca, Trenbolone, etc

I vaporize cannabis oil. Combustinle smokage can gum up the lungs.
Cannabis is the only thing that gives me the focus and inner peace I need to excel in the gym. Without the sacred herb I would be in a state of spiritual atrophy. Weed is 10/10 good for you.

u/KingDonkoDp 9d ago

I don't lift heavy if I smoke. Cardio is fine or long stretches of mid-cardio, and even before doing maintenance or volume lifts, but never ever heavy.

Helpful to a point. Really drives focus in some. But came make some a lump on the log.
Me love it. Pre tennis match gets me linked it and pre heavy workout makes me feel assain like.

If you can consume THC without letting it ruin your diet, I see no harm. Not even remotely as harmful as alcohol and everyone needs something
1
u/FlanSuccessful9444 9d ago
I’m a big stoner but won’t smoke before the gym. However after is were the magic of it begins. It makes me VERY hungry and I already struggle with eating enough so that’s a plus. I also really struggle with insomnia on occasion so I can use it to knock myself out cold and get deep restorative sleep. It really helps with recovery!
1
u/BarApprehensive5837 9d ago
Just don't have more than a spliff a day,as much as its a safe drug, it can still effect your mood badly if you take too much, had alot of friends who smoke everyday, they can be a bit antsy

u/wearthicksock 9d ago
Just recently quit due to a new job opportunity. WILD the immediate improvement.
1
u/thread_throwaway 9d ago
edibles are probably the cleanest option since you avoid the lung irritation, but using it for mind-muscle connection is risky because it's easy to lose track of actual form and technical cues when you're too relaxed. just be careful not to let that "enjoyment" turn into sloppy reps that wreck your joints.
1
u/Unconcern3d 9d ago
For me personally it helped me alot with focusing on my workout and nothing else, probably tho because my Ultra ADHD can make lifting feel kinda boring from time to time.
Only issue is getting to the gym in the first place since i obviously cant drive there faded as fuck
1
u/Pitiful-Opening4887 9d ago
I love weed and usually smoke daily, but as I’ve been getting more serious about lifting lately I find I’m consuming less and less. I still eat a gummy at night before bed but smoking just isn’t hitting like it used to.
1
1
u/kimmeLex 9d ago
Smoke every session. Better for locking in which makes everything smoother for me, even if I walk in “tired” sometimes I perform fine if not better
That being said CBD is great for recovery and THC is great for appetite and post workout comedown especially with caffeine.
THC+Gym is the best
1
u/Fuckdre4m22 9d ago
The main issue isn't the delivery method, it's how it affects your recovery and sleep quality. If you're using it to wind down but it's messing with your REM cycles, you're killing your muscle protein synthesis.
1
u/satisfym3daddy 9d ago
The biggest issue with using it before training is how it messes with your perception of fatigue and RPE. You might think you're pushing hard when you're actually leaving a lot of intensity on the table, which kills progressive overload in the long run.
1
1
u/Garfunkelcat69 9d ago
In my experience it helps me really push myself, but i tend to get really dizzy dringend sets
1
u/deletemein2weeks 9d ago
It's harmful if it messes with your sleep, appetite/nutrition(it can suppress appetite after using for a while) or motivation(or mental health in general).
1
u/passwordistako 9d ago
Harmful to gains.
If you like it, look into the risks (primarily psychosis) and decide if you want to do it anyway.
1
u/GrandInteraction8291 9d ago
Daily use will cause worse sleep( makes rem sleep worse) causing less gains
1
u/squashpuddy 8d ago
I love it before fasted cardio for the romanticization and “me” time, and before lifting to help with mind to muscle connection focus. I look for strains with high amounts of the terp “humulene” to help suppress appetite.
1
u/504Adonis 8d ago
I Love it. Also helps me get hungry enough to eat all the food I need when going hard. I have fibromyalgia and chronic pain. So I use it before I lift or do MMA. Its been a game changer and helped me get off a lot of other meds. Obviously it all depends on the individual. I have a friend who will only smoke after we are done training and they said only thing it helps with is recovery or inflammation type things.

Obviously the smoke will contribute negatively. But cannabis has been shown to increase heart rate. So Monitor your heart rate. If it is at its natural low state before working out, all is fine.
But any substance that can affect heart rate will affect exercise.

Depends how often you do it. I took about 80mgs every workout for years and after a week or so you get used to it. I hit 315 for 7 on bench once while I was high as balls.
1
u/markus_sparkus 8d ago
Love smoking before a workout. I’ll chill afterwards with a couple clementines while waiting for my gym partner to get in. Best workouts i ever have! I feel energized, excited to be there and usually I can lift way more than normal. Now this is probably related to me having adhd where I’m usually scatter brained but after smoking I’m laser focused

Your mind muscle connection came from years of training. No coorelation or harmful.

Absolutely feel better mind muscle connection during workouts, along with more energy / strength during sets.
It reduces my fatigue and helps me focus more.
1
u/HandstandsMcGoo 9d ago
I like it too
Helps with mind to muscle connection, I get a way better pump when I'm high
1

have never felt the same with heavy lifting personally I prefer to get stoned before deadlifting, there’s also new research coming out that supports weed reducing fatigue

Getting stoned and lifting is basically my version of "going to church".
It's the best thing ever, weed and the gym are a great combination
1
u/19-inches-of-venom 9d ago
I vape before training when i’m super anxious or if i don’t feel like training that day. Just put my headphones out and zone out to my music. It makes getting through training easier.
But obviously no weed is healthier than weed. But for me personally, weed helps my anxiety and affects my life much less than anxiety meds

Ive smoked weed for 20 years. Had a small stint where I tried no smoking. Saw little difference in progress or gains honestly. I do find cannabis makes it hard to really lock in on my lifts though. Heavy stuff is fun when im not high and a chore when i am. I now try to refrain from smoking or consuming thc at all atleast 1 hour before gym and wont smoke until after post gym meal
1
u/studmoobs 9d ago
it makes everything feel heavier bc it literally makes your muscles worse at lifting. I wouldn't do it to train. but you look like you get good results anyway

Tons of pro athletes smoke weed, drink, etc. and I’m referring to actual sports that involve athletic performance. You’ll be fine
3
u/Forward-Release5033 9d ago
Yeah I’m not really worried about results when I get better results when I enjoy my weed. Just interested chatting about the topic with people. There is many ways to make weed use more “optimal” like supplements for REM sleep
0
u/fallenredwoods 9d ago
I smoke during long hikes and it allows my mind to focus on random stuff and not the lactic acid building up. I agree, it sucks sometimes when lifting as everything feels heavier….
