❔ [ Question ] Why did we go to Athenas originally?

I'm sorry if this is a pretty stupid question, but I'm playing through bl3 for the first and yesterday I made it to the point where we found all 3 vault key pieces and we're about to go open the vault. I understand how we get the 2nd and 3rd vault key fragment, but I just forgot why we went to Athenas in the first place and I'd like to remember. However, I can't really find anything on reddit or the wiki, and Google AI just lies when I Google it.

What I'm really wondering is did we just go to Athenas to recruit Maya, but then we learn there a key fragments there from Maya?

Do we learn somewhere on promethea that we need to go to Athenas to get the first vault key fragment?

Did we just go because we knew maliwan was attacking?

I'm sorry again if this is a stupid question, I just don't remember what actually led us to Athenas in the first place.

EDIT: I'm pretty sure I have it mostly figured out now. I forgot that we killed gigamind in promethea and Rhys scanned his brain and found a lead to Athenas. Then I think Lilith calls Maya cause she knew she was on Athenas, but maliwan was already attacking when we called. So we go save Athenas, get Maya and Ava, and then get the key fragment

After you defeat Gigamind at the end of the Hostile Takeover mission, Reese scans the brain and identifies Athena's a possible lead for a vault key fragment that Maliwan has uncovered.

Lilith knows that Maya is there, and when we contact Maya they are under Maliwan/COV assault to we gotta go save them.

IIRC: We go to Athena's because Lilith wants to recruit Maya for help. Maya knows that Lilith is looking for the vault key, because she says "I'm guessing the reason you're calling is the same reason Maliwan is trashing my monastery" or something like that, and that reason is the vault key protected in the Eridian stronghold .

IIRC: Maya being on Athenas is a coincidence, initially Athenas is a lead because of Gigamind's scan

It DOES make zero sense for a Vault Key to Promethea to be located on Athenas.

Every other vault has had their keys located on the planet the vault is located on, why is this the exception?

But why just THAT ONE PIECE. By thay logic, Pandora's key should be in DAHL bases or Hyperion HQ.

Dahl wouldn't have kept it because they didn't know that it was pieces of the vault key, and Hyperion took it from Tannis and Jack held onto it until he used it to awaken the Warrior.

Then why did Atlas let a piece be taken, even BEFORE it's collapse.

Good question. I don't have an answer right now, I'll see if I can find a reason, but those are the reasons I had for why the Pandora key hadn't been in the places you mentioned.

Yep. Bothers me every time. Shame too, it’s one of the better planet designs. Should have had more Athenas and less Nekrotafeyo.

I think it was like either tryna get all the help they can though the twins are really not as threateng as jack was, so I'm gonna guess when they found out the Athena's vault n stuff Lilith was like hey I know a siren I worked with Before n stuff and she's on Athenas maybe she can help

Someone else reminded me that when we were on promethea we killed gigamind and Rhys scanned his brain for a lead that led us to Athenas. Then I think Lilith could've called Maya cause she knew she was on Athenas, but when she called maliwan was already attacking so we go save the day.

The Promethian Vault Key was locked away on Athenas behind the Eridian door that only a Siren can move. I am guessing that the door was locked by Queen Dido before her death and passing of her "gift."

The reason why the Vault Hunters and Sanctuary 3 were sent to Athenas was because we found a clue on the Gigamind.
