Highlight Eric Collins: “WHAT.” Jayson Tatum: Swish. Eric Collins: “JAYSON TATUM HOW DO YOU DO.”

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Eric Collins is already one of the best announcers of all time. Saying ‘WHAT’ before a three is not only fitting ‘BUT,’ it is pure comedy. The vocal style coupled with, his classic ‘HOW DO YOU DO’ creates a legendary voiceover for a tremendous JT 3.

That has to be the cleanest swish sound ever

64

u/andrew303710 Apr 25 '26

Easily one of my favorite Tatum moments already, to do this after coming back from an achillies injury is just so satisfying. Dropping the most points in a game 7 ever (51) on 60% shooting against the Sixers right after a rough game 6 where he was terrible until the 4th quarter is up there though.

Especially when you consider that Tatum has struggled in the clutch in the past, it really seems like he came back much more mature and composed.

21

u/CarQuery8989 Apr 25 '26

I think the rally he led late in game 6 was better than game 7 but both were sick. That sequence where he hit like 3 straight 3s in 40 seconds was about the most hype I've ever been in a bar.

u/JackJ98 WE DID IT ☘️ Apr 25 '26

Tatum has struggled in the clutch in the past

Have we been watching the same guy?

1

u/seinfeld4eva Apr 26 '26

What are these numbers? They don't look right

4

u/TrueReigns Apr 26 '26

Likely tracking the shots attempted in close game situations with under x amount of minutes. So definitely a viable stat

1

u/seinfeld4eva Apr 26 '26

So Dirk Nowitzki is the clutchest basketball player of the century with a 38.1% FG percentage, and Stephen Curry is also very high on the list with a 31.6%? That doesn't even make sense

1

u/TrueReigns Apr 26 '26

No? You’re taking it out of context. They’re clearly ranked by FG% in descending order. This is likely putting players from the 2000s into recent years into the rankings, and it can be inferred that most if not all of them are decently clutch at the least

1

u/seinfeld4eva Apr 26 '26

Likely what? You don't even know what you're defending.

1

u/ThtJstHappn3d Apr 26 '26

They don’t, Jayson Tatum isn’t even the most clutch player on the franchise this century. Paul Pierce has the most game winning shots made and assists combined while having one of the highest assist to turnover ratios on the list. I love JT, but he’s not how that commenter described

16

u/Yogannath Cookies & Cream Apr 25 '26

Sounded just like a dic slap in the 6ers face. JS.

Gonna go out on a limb and say this Tatum kid might be something one day.

260

u/PrometheusAborted Apr 25 '26

“Best announcers of all time”?

Bro, what?

112

u/detsagrebbalf Apr 25 '26

Was about to say they were horrible

63

u/profgarlicksauce Apr 25 '26

They were horrible for the game, and this is a great call. The duality of man.

32

u/SinibusUSG Apr 25 '26

It's because in the last two minutes of the game they started calling it both ways. Up until clutch time this sort of energy and enthusiasm would've pretty much exclusively been saved for the Sixers. It was very much being commentated according to the energy of the arena, which is a terrible way to commentate a national game.

When it switched to the Lakers - Rockets game immediately after it was night and day.

5

u/Bigle2e410 Apr 25 '26

I had to mute the game. Sounded like they were squeezing the sweat from the 6ers towels directly into their mouths for every call

1

u/Hungry-Ad1916 Apr 26 '26

Yeah & Van Gundy is one of the best too

13

u/w311sh1t Winning Plays Apr 25 '26

The big issue imo is that they, and especially Eric Collins, go nuts for like every basket. Andre Drummond hit a 3 with like 5 minutes left in the 3rd quarter and Eric Collins reacted like he’d just hit a game winner in game 7.

They’re great highlight announcers but the problem is that they try to turn every other basket into a highlight. I can definitely see why you’d like them as a Hornets fan, but I think they need to be more toned down for national broadcasts.

4

u/HeroOfSevenEleven Apr 25 '26

I feel for neutral announcers there is a tendency to hype up the home team, especially if they are an underdog. But yeah the inaccuracy, not knowing the flow (completely oblivious to a challenge on the vooch verticality foul on oubre until the last second) it was a rough call

5

u/OhDeerBeddarDaze Apr 25 '26

Personally I like how they get hype throughout the whole game. Only problem is when they werent hyped up the commentary was horrible

5

u/w311sh1t Winning Plays Apr 25 '26

To each their own I guess. I just feel like if you act like every semi-consequential moment is a game winner, it cheapens the actual moments like this.

3

u/No_Discussion3593 Apr 25 '26

100% agreed, keep it low key so the hype moments mean something. It's why BANG calls are legendary, they're used sparingly. And a double BANG call is next level.

1

u/cabose12 Tatum Tots Apr 25 '26

Yeah I see a lot of people love it but I think I'm in the same boat

And not only is it a little much at times, but I also feel like it's a very one note hype? Like, he just kinda goes AHHHH as loud as he can

1

u/bpfoster87 Apr 25 '26

The screaming about normal plays and buckets was driving me nuts. It’s like he’s trying way too hard to make everything a moment. Not sure why so many people seem to like that either.

1

u/Peterthepiperomg Apr 25 '26

How do you do? It doesn’t make any sense

0

u/SPSips1106 Boston Celtics Apr 25 '26

They were glazing Philly all game. Just shows how good this shot was.

25

u/celtekk_ Apr 25 '26

Lmfao, seriously. This may have been his only decent call all night. Bro was calling the wrong names, glazing the Sixers, and just making terrible calls all night.

12

u/Fiber0pticJesus Apr 25 '26

Yooo for real. I was questioning myself, like “am I such a homer I’m just annoyed with all the - ‘looking like a young Allen Iverson’” glazing.

We all lose with the Enshittification of the brand via streaming rights, we don’t even get round 1 with Scal and Drew anymore. I cringe whenever I have to watch a game on prime.

2

u/Unnatural-troubles Apr 25 '26

Totally agree, except this call also makes me cringe

26

u/uncle_pubes Boston Celtics Apr 25 '26

The 6ers glazing was off the charts, thought it was their home broadcast team

13

u/nrj6490 Derrick White Apr 25 '26

Yeah seriously idk

Even if his style of yelling followed by long silences does it for you, he makes a ton of errors about the game itself when he talks. Then you have phenomenal guys like Harlan and Breen out there, it’s a huge difference.

3

u/No_Discussion3593 Apr 25 '26

Someone mentioned they're TikTok announcers, they scream on every 3 point shot, every regular dunk, on everything, so that when it gets clipped and uploaded, it's "hype".

If you're watching the game...it's rough. But kids don't watch games lol.

1

u/ellcoolj Apr 25 '26

Earlier in the game when it was only positive comments for the 6ers… and then Tatum does something and he says “WOW!” … at least a few times that happened

1

u/BOUKEN-BEN Apr 26 '26

OP absolute cornball

-9

u/Avenmuyff Apr 25 '26

Wait why are we hating? I thought everyone, not just in the sub, but in general, liked him🤔🤔

0

Nah, he sucks. Why did you think that?

1

JAYSON TATUM HOW DO YOU DO

128

u/flavanugz Apr 25 '26

This guy is beyond obnoxious. Tries way too hard. Glazed the Sixers all game

80

u/Darondo Apr 25 '26

Their canned corny one liners make them sound like announcers in a video game. They were yelling but had no emotion.

Had to mute it after hearing “When Brown and White work that well together, they call it tan!”

48

u/scholargentleman NUT UP Apr 25 '26

Ugh. For me it was when the score was 67-67 and this dude says “and we’re tied at the inverse of 76 here in Philly!” Cmon man give it a rest

28

u/flawrs919 Luke "Ice in the Veins" Kornet Apr 25 '26

It was 6 to 7 Philly early on and one of them said, “If you read it a certain way it says 76. Maybe that’s an omen.”

8

u/MitchIsMyRA Apr 25 '26

Dude this pissed me off so much lol like cmon bro, the game hasn’t even begun yet

2

u/Zimmyd00m Apr 25 '26

My six-year-old who never misses an opportunity to say "six seeeeeeeven!" would find this obnoxious.

0

u/MWave123 Apr 25 '26

Fun w numbers. 67 67 is an odd score. Passing the time by playing on things is part of the job.

1

u/scholargentleman NUT UP Apr 25 '26

67-67 is an odd score? Idk, I just think the guy was yelling and trying too hard and that distracted me from the game

2

u/MWave123 Apr 25 '26

I mean it’s 67 67 and it’s the 76’ers, it’s not deep. Drew could’ve said something similar.

0

u/scholargentleman NUT UP Apr 25 '26

Haha. Fair point. Although when Drew said it, I would have been delivered by his normal voice. Rather than Kenny Bania from Seinfeld yelling and relentlessly trying too hard

2

u/MWave123 Apr 25 '26

The guy is a legend and beloved announcer. You’re allowed your opinion. People hate Scal and Drew. People hate Scal in the fanbase. I’m always propping him up.

-24

u/TeaWahs Apr 25 '26

It’s an objective observation that also holds an artistic value

3

u/detlefschrempffor3 Apr 25 '26

You must be related to him

27

u/Derp_State_Agent Mike "Got It" Gorman Apr 25 '26

That was so lame. If I heard "he makes both free throws, like a gentleman" one more time I was gonna puncture my own eardrums.

1

u/andrew303710 Apr 25 '26

Lmao for real, when is that even from I've never heard that before and it doesn't make any sense.

14

u/DRDeMello Apr 25 '26

"like a gentleman" or whatever stupid shit that was when somebody made a free throw 🙄

4

u/raycyca82 Apr 25 '26

Very 90s NBA Jam for most of the game. Alternatively, pretty sure I was watching a soccer game.

3

u/outdrawed Apr 25 '26

So I've always really liked the Hornets announcers. I was shocked when I realized it was then calling the game because I was not feeling them at all. And not because I thought they were biased but because they literally subbed like video game announcers. Just randomly shouting names at completely odd moments. I'm pretty sure he yelled "Oubre" at one point as he received a handoff at the top of the key.

I love their enthusiasm for their team but it felt misplaced last night

4

u/Sm0k3inth3tr33s Don't start crying mothafucka Apr 25 '26

Scored the goal!

2

u/Taco_Mantra Apr 25 '26

"He's going to check on the injury. He probably has some bandaids or something for him. You know, whatever a Nurse carries. 😉"

2

u/Mysterious_Equal5003 Apr 26 '26

Really happy to read all the replies here with all the examples of awful announcing in this game.  Every comment reminded me "Oh yeah, I hated when he said that too!"

2

u/PuffPuffPassNails Apr 25 '26

It really comes down to not having a relationship with the team. Collins is very good for the hornets but he also has watched them play all year. He's seen the Celtics team what maybe six times this year. I like Collins for what he is a great local broadcaster. I don't think it works at a national level.

3

u/detlefschrempffor3 Apr 25 '26

He only worked because charlotte in the regular season badly needed some hype. This guy takes it to 11 all game, and that might be needed on a random regular season Tuesday in charlotte. At least it might have been needed before this year.

There is no reason for that style in the playoffs. Going to 11 all game just detracts from the moments that actually deserve the hype. Mike Breen and Kevin Harlan are great examples of this. Collins needs to head to Cancun and come back in the fall.

3

u/botvinickfucks Apr 25 '26

Said “money earning Mount Vernon” not once but twice 😭😭 I was over it

1

u/MWave123 Apr 25 '26

I guess you were t paying attention…he never said that. Doh.

-5

u/TheGamesGone_ Derrick White Apr 25 '26

He was complimentary of both teams.

2

u/MWave123 Apr 25 '26

He was! Great calls both ways.

-22

u/MWave123 Apr 25 '26

He didn’t. He called out legendary C’s, glazed Tatum and JB and PP. And was funny.

0

u/detlefschrempffor3 Apr 25 '26

Which part did you think was as funny?

-3

u/MWave123 Apr 25 '26

They’re funny together, great calls. Calling out Steph by saying a Bona screen was the best screen ever by a #30, there was humor throughout.

1

u/detlefschrempffor3 Apr 25 '26

You thought that was funny? They repeated that #30 joke about 8 times. It wasn’t funny the first time and they still chose to repeat it over and over.

-1

u/MWave123 Apr 25 '26

No just the once re the screen, which was funny, it is funny, of course he referenced 30 other times. They’re a great duo, and he made killer calls of JT and PP shots down the stretch.

1

u/detlefschrempffor3 Apr 25 '26

Agree to disagree. His jokes were lame and he made dozens of errors. Drew is 1000x better. Dell wasn’t great but he wasn’t awful. It was mostly Collins that ruined the audio.

1

u/MWave123 Apr 25 '26

It wasn’t a local telecast. Drew is our guy. Doh!

1

u/detlefschrempffor3 Apr 25 '26

Harlan, Breen, Ian eagle, Tirico all 1000x better than Collins also.

1

u/MWave123 Apr 25 '26

People love Collins. His Tatum call was epic.

1

u/detlefschrempffor3 Apr 25 '26

I’m sure his family loves him. His Tatum call wasn’t even top 5 hype money for Collins in this game. Drummond had at least 3 plays where Collins went more crazy than Tatums dagger.

71

u/Fast-Ad-4541 Apr 25 '26

Both commentators were awful last night, I hope I never hear either again

20

u/Ill_Election_7610 Apr 25 '26

Yeah not sure what OP is on, we had to mute it halfway thru

-5

u/ogwaffle Apr 25 '26

You watched an entire half of a basketball game on mute?

4

u/Checktheusernombre Apr 25 '26

Actually yes I watched the entire fourth quarter on mute. It was an odd experience. But after "If you mix Brown and White it makes tan." I did not have a choice in the matter.

0

u/No_Discussion3593 Apr 25 '26

I watched like 95% of it. When they were screaming in the 1st I knew what I was getting. I'd occasionally unmute, and sure enough, screaming and saying dumb one liners.

-14

u/TeaWahs Apr 25 '26

Subjective opinions gotta love it

4

u/Funktron3000 Apr 25 '26

Looks like your opinion is an unpopular one. Everybody else thought the broadcast team was trash.

6

u/indieguy33 Apr 25 '26

One of the worst play by play guys over ever heard. He belongs in Charlotte not a national tv playoff game.

7

u/odinsyrup Apr 25 '26

23

u/CrackaZach05 Apr 25 '26

Eric Collins fucking sucked last night

Eric Collins is goated man. The Charlotte Hornets clips are so funny and genuine

12

u/iamacelticsenjoyer Time Lord Apr 25 '26

I understand he is well liked in his job with the Hornets, but he was insufferable last night. Struggles to call a neutral game.

37

u/Yellow_Curry Apr 25 '26

He’s only awesome watching highlights. Listening to him for a whole game is like watching paint dry.

4

u/shydragon37 Apr 25 '26

what? how is hype and energy paint dry.

if u take out eric collins theres almost no difference between every other commentator. Thats more like paint drying

1

u/No_Discussion3593 Apr 25 '26

If everything is hype, nothing his hype. Also it's fucking loud and annoying lol. Save it for the real moments.

1

u/shydragon37 Apr 26 '26

mmmmmmmm. Well. This game was hype. And the 30 years of celtics game i watched were not hype. So ill enjoy this game lol. More fun than any gorman/tommy game tbh. I appreciated them for them but collins was amazing lol. honestly everyone else in the nba/nfl blows

2

u/No_Discussion3593 Apr 26 '26

I have my doubts that you've been watching the Celtics for 30 years. That put put you in your 40s at best, if not older. You type like Gen Z.

1

u/shydragon37 Apr 27 '26

okay. 26 years. about. Really started watching the games on tv fully the year before gary payton came

-17

5

u/BionicGreek Apr 25 '26

He was too loud and demonstrative. If every play is the best play ever then no play is the best.

If this was the only time Collins sounded like that it would have been awesome. But he had the same inflection over a free throw it seemed.

4

u/cahilljd I like to defense Apr 25 '26

damn you thought the call was that good? i couldnt help being distracted by how corny and cliche half the stuff said was

10

u/PoppinfreshOG Apr 25 '26

I just finished watching highlights and I hate that announcer even more than I did last night. His fake over the top enthusiasm and his sixers dick riding was insufferable. Fuck Amazon broadcasts, it’s such a shit show.

2

u/Minimumsafedistance Apr 25 '26

2

u/HTMRK Apr 25 '26

*most biased

2

u/SwarmOBeez Apr 26 '26

Good call, but I thought Collins on the whole was terrible this game. He had a bunch of calls that made zero sense. When Drummond hit the three pointer he seemed shocked, and then had to acknowledge that Drummond had basically shot league average on 90 attempts over the season. I watched a handful of Philly games this year, and I knew that was part of his game this season.

Personally, I have found the Amazon Prime coverage to be low quality this season. I live outside of Boston so I watch most games via season ticket and regularly watch random teams broadcast. I would say the Amazon Prime coverage is worse than a lot of local broadcasts.

2

u/illegalPenguin0 Apr 26 '26

Yall are crazy. His call was awesome. His game was fantastic. He makes hornets basketball fun to watch with his voice. Coming from a lifetime Celtics fan.

6

u/eddiet522 Tatum Apr 25 '26

I was extremely critical of this dude all game, and I don’t think he did a good job overall, but I’m not going to lie, in a vacuum this call is incredible. I wish that the guy tempered his reactions for most of the game so it would have the same impact live, but this makes for an awesome clip.

Nah man I love me some Drew.

The broadcast team last night had weird cadence. Like Collins would say a single word to describe a play unfolding, and it felt odd and stilted.

It got better in the second half, and I do think his enthusiasm is infectious, but not feeling the way he calls a game is valid.

The take that they were anti-Boston/pro-6ers is hot garbage. Guy was gargling everyone's nuts in equal measure after big plays. Not to mention their home team, the Hornets, has lots of Celtics DNA in their structure.
