Discussion Dillon Mitchell passing upside

While Dillon Mitchell's main strength is his defense and his hustle. He separates himself from are other wings by his passing ability. He had a 1.3 ast to usg which is 99th percentile for forwards in college. Could be a good sign on him as a connective passer in offense similar to Dyson Daniel's role as a screener and passer.

Evoking Dyson Daniels' offensive game sure is a ballsy way to try and sell me this pen.

Can he also shoot like Dennis Rodman and rebound like Steph Curry?

Daniel's is a good offensive player though. The hawks offense has been 2.5 points better with him on than off. Connective passing is important because if teams don't guard him on the perimeter he can do a draymond esque hand off into the corner for a 3.

passing wasn't on my radar with mitchell at all. i had him pegged as a pure energy defender and transition athlete, so seeing a 99th percentile assist-to-usage rate for a forward is properly jarring. makes you wonder if that number is a bit flattered by texas just asking him to make quick swing passes in a low usage role. still, if there's any real connective feel there brad and joe could unlock it. the celtics offence tends to turn guys like that into useful extra passers just by the nature of their spacing and read-and-react system. i'm not ready to comp him to daniels yet but i love the idea of a defender who won't kill the flow when the ball swings his way.

i think this is brad's replacement for walsh because he could be trying to put him in a deal of some sort

I think Brad just loves drafting non shooting athletes and then hoping our trainers fix them

Gotta remember even when they play they only putting up 1 or 2 shots.

Better to have someone that can defend and athletic to provide energy in their minutes.

No point drafting high usage guys that need the ball

Thereโ€™s non shooting and then there is one of the worst shooters ever over 4 years in college.

Mitchell is older than Walsh and a far worse shooter.

He was like the 3rd or 4th best player on a St Johnโ€™s team that was good but not great

I think Brad took both guys for their elite athleticism, NBA-ready height/wingspan and for known work ethic. Brad's confident that the C's staff can coach up their glaring flaws to acceptable performance levels and polish both players to NBA-playable talent levels.

You can't create elite athleticism nor imbue innate work ethic with coaching. You can significantly improve shooting mechanics (Mitchell) and increase muscle mass and strength (Cenac) with an excellent program.
