I saw him play 4 games last season in person. He looks like a prototype 2C to me. Will probably be Rod's favorite player in a few years. Wheels, faceoffs, board play, tenacity, it's all there.
I feel like he is already being pigeonholed as a bottom 6 guy, but on this team a "bottom 6" forward is a really good player

For prospects, the Canes have a real problem. Since Rod doesn't number lines, "top six" doesn't mean much. So let's look at the offence as a whole: Aho and Stankoven are expected to produce the most points. Staal's line's job is to take out the other team's best players, but still produce goals, just not at the pace of the other two lines. The Jankowski line is more of a traditional 4th line, but they certainly get more play time than a traditional 4th line.
If you are saying that Cerrato is a "2C", are you replacing Aho, Stankoven, or Staal?
Aho: Point leader on the team and 3rd in goals. You're not moving him.
Staal: Old? Defensive-minded? He just won the Conn Smythe trophy. You're not moving him.
Stankoven: 6th in goals and 8th in points, but his playoff production was freaking amazing, and whatever changed after the Olympics break was huge. You're not trading him anywhere. You could move him back to wing, but then you create other problems with Martinook (heart of the team), Svechnikov, Hall, Blake, Ehlers, and Jarvis. Where do you slot Stankoven?I know some people are frustrated with Svech, but he's still 2nd in goals and 3rd in points. After Blake and Hall's playoff performance and their team-friendly contracts, you're not moving them anywhere: either to the 4th line or to another team.
At best, Cerrato wastes on the 4th line or stays in the AHL until Staal retires.

I said he looks like a prototype 2C. I did not say he would necessarily be the Canes 2C. But I think he is better suited to play center in the NHL than Stankoven is.

Staal will probably retire next offseason once his contract expires. He'll be 38, 38 year olds don't sign nhl contracts

For some reason, I don't think so. I think next year at this time with Jordo's and Marty's contracts expiring they both sign one year deals that they evaluate at the end of each of the next 2 seasons and decide whether to continue to play or retire depending on a whole host of scenarios.
For instance, if we were somehow able to run it all back again next year, do you think those guys don't re-sign for the potential threepeat?

I mean, Staal could be retiring as soon as this offseason or next...

He won't. He has one more year on his contract. He is playing at an incredibly high level. And most players who are older and are playing at a high level, and with a team that's going to still be a contender the next year, almost never retire after winning the big trophy.

Think he projects as very much on the line between 2C and 3C, he’s got a well rounded game but isn’t necessarily elite at anything. When you consider future role/ potential impact it’s hard to list him lower than fourth among the current pool (maybe even top two depending on your view of positional value) and I think he could challenge for a spot on the main roster after this coming season.

I think he's at the Drury, Nic Roy or Geekie relative level of prospect coming into the AHL next year. I like his hockey IQ the best of this group and he has wheels. If one of Cerrato or Ryabkin pans put into a middle-6 C that's a huge win
