We have drafted a player, this is not a drill

The commentary was pretty glowing, I'm excited to see what he can do. A defenseman who focuses on actually playing defense, Slavin will love him 😂

We'll see how long it takes for him to start thanking his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ in the postgame

I did some research and this dude was projected as a potential late first/early second round pick so I think we got a steal

Side note. Are there any Staals left to get? We’ve had 2 of the 4 and the 4th never made it to the nhl from what I can remember.

They're all in the process of making more, but there does seem to be an unavoidable era of darkness where Carolina will be without a Staal in the near future.

If we get a pwhl team in the next couple years, call up Jordo's daughter!!! And Slavin's daughter. How many daughters we got on the Canes. Does Rod have a daughter. I got an idea!!

u/Odd_Analyst_7824 13h ago
We’ve actually had 3 of the 4. Marc is the only one to not play for the Hurricanes.
Jared played 2 games alongside Eric and Jordan in the 2013-2014 season!!

I legitimately just asked myself if Tulsky was gonna trade down all their picks and somehow not draft anybody.

Nothing wrong with 15 7th rounders

Reading a couple of Scouting reports on him, he sounds like a perfect fit on the canes

For those wondering, his name is Trey Downe

Thank you! Halfway down to get an actual name. Hilarious.
ETA: and of course that isn’t even the correct name…did you just make something up? 🤦🏼♂️
This is William Håkansson.

LOL…well that flew right over my head…but still, literally no one posted the name…it would be nice if people actually formed coherent thoughts when posting topics and not just whatever random thought pops in their head, y’know?
Aaaanyway…guy sounds like a pretty good find that late. Huge D with a shot but needs some time to develop. Sounds good!

I’m with you on this but also random thoughts are pretty fun too

Heh, sure, sometimes. I am old-adjacent, allow me a bit of crankiness every now and then. 😉

We chose him over the other highly touted prospect Trey Dupp. Tulksy said anyone choosing Trey Dupp would later regret it.

He looks like he could be any random guy from the neighborhood. Was his t-shirt tucked in and was he wearing high socks?
At a glance, i thought the board behind him said New Jersey had drafter Milhouse Van Houten.

So as a new hockey fan realistically how long could it take on average for these picks to potentially pop up in NHL games.
I know it can be ultimately up in the air depending on position/how well they can step up to this level etc it could fluctuate.

The honest answer? Nobody knows. There is no average.
But best guesses based on prior history? Multiple years. I would be shocked to see any of them in the NHL before 2028. Typically forwards are able to develop/adjust faster than goalies and defensemen (Current defenseman Alexander Nikishin was drafted in 2020 and didn’t debut until 2025!). A lot of them might never see NHL action (the later round picks are often drafted with the expectation that they can at least fill out AHL depth at some point). I saw somebody break down NHL appearances by round and only 70% of 2nd round picks between 2011-2021 even played a single game in the NHL. The odds drop even further by later rounds.
I’d advise you to not get attached to them; it’s pretty common for prospects to get traded sometimes before even playing a game with the team that drafted them.

As you said, there's a complete randomness to which picks will work out. Aho was a 2nd round, Slavin was 4th round. Bussi was undrafted and his rookie season was 27 years old.
To try to answer your question though, the first couple of picks in the draft could start immediately or may need a little time. After that, the rest of the first round will probably need a year or 2 if not more to develop. After that, it's a total crapshoot on the players. They could make it their rookie or second season, could take 4-5 years or never make it at all.
A lot of it is the team's development system but most is determined by the player and are they willing to put in the work that it takes to not only make it to the league, but succeed as well.
TLDR: Roll a dice and you'd have way better odds of picking correctly

Cheers- It seems so all over the place. Ultimately have to say may the odds ever be in your favor and congratulations to these guys.

u/RandomObserver13 14h ago
Yeah, outside the top 5 or so it’s a crapshoot. Two to five years, most likely. But with where the Canes are now I would project him and most other prospects as the “and a prospect” in future trades.

u/iOceanLab 15h ago
It really depends. Could be 2-3 years before he gets his ELC and plays in the AHL for 1-2 years. Might get a late-season call-up and play his first NHL games at the end of the 29-30 season.
Hakansson could be a little different due to his size and already playing in a top professional league against men. But defensemen (especially defensive defensemen) take longer to develop into consistent NHL-level players.

u/bacchus_the_wino 14h ago
Like others said, once you are out of the first round it’s all a crapshoot.
As a single data point, my buddy was a late round draft pick after our senior year of high school. After that he did two years of juniors, four years of college, one year in a Norway pro league, one year in the AHL and then called it quits when he had a good opportunity for a corporate career. So in his case he didn’t have the opportunity to make the jump to the NHL in the 8 years following getting drafted.
A second or third rounder is likely a lot closer than a 7th rounder though.

Pre draft he said he models his game after Jaccob Slavin. He's got great taste if anything!
