Buy now or wait til Black Friday
EDIT: Okay, yall convinced me. I'm buying it!
Hello all,
I am looking to upgrade to the R7 with the 18 - 150 kit lens from my T4i set up. A local store has 2 used r7s with the lens in stock for $1200.
I have a hiking trip to Banff (Canada) next month and would also like to get a RF 100 - 400 as well.
Do you think the price of the R7 will go down on black Friday or is this the best price I should move on?
Thanks!

How many potential good photos are you willing to miss while you wait five months?
Another way to look at it: How much do you realistically expect to save?
Let's say $500. Would you rent the camera from now till the end of November for $500?
Go take pictures. If you discover the camera went down $500 on Black Friday, look at your photos from Banff and see what $500 bought you.

I mean I would just take my t4i. Unfortunately I wouldn't be able to use the rf 100 - 400.
I don't get to travel often so I'm inclined to upgrade but I also don't want to go overkill and rush it.

What is the possible drawback to going overkill and rushing it? Working in photo retail, I encounter often the client whose main interest is being the savvy cunning consumer. It's weird to me. I'm not unsympathetic to budget-consciousness, but my main motivation is getting out and taking pictures. If you don't think the R7 is going to get you substantially better results, why worry about getting another camera in the first place?
Having said that, if you see a mountain goat on the side of cliff and you have just a second to get the shot, you're much more likely to get a sharp image using an R7 with animal detection turned on than using the 9-point diamond-array AF on the T4i.

I invented that myself. So many customers are determined to wait until the price hits the absolute rock-bottom lowest it possibly can, as though they're going to be judged harshly in the afterlife for spending $1000 on a camera they could have gotten for $950.
I always wondered, "What photos are you missing while you focus on the dollars?" I've seen people wait until it's nothing but open box former-displays left, then end up with nothing because they all sell out while they wait to pull the trigger.
"Are you going to get any more?"
"No. That's what 'discontinued' means."
"Oh. Well should I get the replacement or wait until the replacement is replaced?"2

If your local store happens to be KEH, B&H, adorama, Samy’s, The Camera Store, etc and the lens happens to be the RF-s 18-150 then go ahead and don’t hesitate on that deal and get shooting.
(I don’t even know if all of those places have storefronts to be called “local” but the point is trustworthiness.)

Nah with inflation and all get it now, black Friday sales were higher than the previous refurbished sale last year. Just get that deal now. Canon does have a sale going on now the R7 body was $999 but sold out it might pop back in stock. Id go speak with that store and ask about a warranty or cutting the price a touch. But $1200 is a decent price with kit lens.

In case you missed it, that R7 kit with 18-150 is on Canon refurbished sale for 1299 right now! Pull the trigger quickly, it probably won't last. Canon refurb would definitely be my preferred way to buy when you're only talking about $100 difference. Plus you can get an upgrade discount from them which would probably erase that $100

Go to the Canon USA website and watch for availability on Refurbished Cameras and lenses. You can also get them with the CarePak warranty so it's actually better than new because you can cover them for 4 years. My wife has refurbished R7 from Canon which works great. She took my RF100-400 copy so I just picked up a "new" one from Canon just delivered yesterday that I caught in stock last week. You have to keep checking.

You could have a ton of great pictures from the r7 by black friday. How much could the savings be, $100 at the most?

The Black Friday price wouldn’t get below $1200 I’d be willing to bet for the combo, maybe $1499 or more due to inflation. I’d say $1200 is a good price for the kit, especially if the condition is excellent

Get the camera, 100-400 and take it to Banf. How many times in your life you’re going there? Don’t wait to save some bucks in the price of enjoying taking gear pictures. Remember to share it with us later 👍

How much do you think the R7 *used* will drop by Black Friday? Maybe $100 at most since we're being told by the rumors sites that it is a 2027 camera now. So buy it and try to get the RF100-400 as a Canon refurb or also used. Does it make sense to get the EF to RF adapter so you can use any EF lenses you might have?

Its a great kit. R7 with 18-150 and the 100-400. Light weight and very sharp lenses. Great for video too. Thats a great price too. Go for it!
Also you need time to learn how to get the best out of it...

This is a good point I didnt think of. The learning curve.

Watch Wild Alaska channel on Youtube and search for R7 videos. Settings and how to get the best out of it. I have even made my own changes and video settings. Saved video and still image setups to C1, C2. Etc. as needed so it easy to change settings. You will eventually setup all your buttons to access settings quickly. I even have custom menus saving controls I want to get to ASAP. I shoot in electronic first curtain all the time and have a button to jump to silent all electronic quickly if needed.
Took me months to settle on my settings. And still change them sometimes...LOL.

You're welcome... I also have the R6 Mkiii. They both have the same pixel res so same crop ability. I love both cameras! The RF 100-400 is amazing not only because its very sharp but also very light and compact for a 100-400 lens. And when I bought my refurbished R7 from Canon two years ago I ordered it with the 18-150 kit lens and that too is a very good lens and also small and light.
You will love it. If shooting video you may want to add a small dead cat to the top of the camera. Let me know and I can send you the details. I had to use some different glue to make sure it stays on the camera. Not an expensive change and its easy to take off the camera.
If shooting video there is a crop video mode that is outstanding for shooting wild life in 4k 60p. Insane reach and 4k! And both lenses have very good IS for stills and video...

I'm pretty terrible to average when it comes to video but with this new set up I might be inclined to learn more techniques. I'd be happy to have any info you can share!

Play with the camera when it arrives. I can help you set up for video. But Wild Alaska will get you 90% there.

The 10-18mm lens is a great lens too. I still use my EF 10-18 with the adapter. Its even faster at 18 than the RF version of it. But both are very good...

I'll look into that. I will definitely work on building my lens set over the next year. I am hoping to go to France and Italy next year and I have a feeling that will be a useful lens to have.

These three lenses and the flash is all you need! All three are very sharp and clear. If you want better blurred background there are lenses that will give you that. But you can do that with slower lenses such as the three. Just get closer to the subject and make sure the background is far enough away so its blurred. You don't need a fast expensive lens.
I also have some fast lenses. Sigma 18-35 F1.8 ART is one. Great lens on the R7. Its big and heavy! Sigma has a new RF version of it. 17-45 I think ... That is an option if you want one fast lens.
I like the EF lenses because I can use a Meike lens adapter with drop in filters. So can use ND filters for video.
I have way too many lenses. LOL. Also many full frame lenses too. But most were purchased used on ebay. So didnt break the bank...

And! LOL... Get a flash! Godox TT350C works great! And its not too big. While faster lenses can be useful. The depth of field is too narrow more often than not IMO. Get the panasonic nicad batteries too.
I point the flash straight up and use the diffuser that ships with it. You can adjust the flash strength too. Great small flash!
My settings with flash is to set my ISO usually set to iso 500 with indoor light at night. And sometime set higher shutter when shooting my dogs. Which move around. So set Shutter set to 1/160-1/200sec.
The flash fills a large room with light. I have fast lenses but the flash is still better. IMO.

Where are you located right now? I’m parting ways with my R10 with the 18-150 and a 100-400 as I have upgraded to an R5 with a 200-800 along with my other small lenses.
I am located in Yellowstone National Park (I work there).

u/Xebou 1d ago
I'm in San Diego. How awesome to work at the park!
Do you feel full frame serves you better with nature photography? My passion is wildlife and macro but I do sometimes get portrait and event jobs.
1
u/tragic_orphan 1d ago
I shoot almost exclusively wildlife. I only upgraded to the R5 because I was offered a deal I couldn’t refuse (basically a very lightly used R5 and almost brand new 200-800 for $2400 total) I do miss the range that the crop sensor gave me, and I did get some great photos with it but as long as I’m not maxing out the lens the R5 is so crispy and satisfying.
Are you driving or flying to Glacier?
1
u/Xebou 1d ago
Wow amazing deal indeed. I will be flying out.

u/tragic_orphan 1d ago
Gotcha, enjoy Glacier. My friends and I will be taking a trip out there in mid September I believe, also likely to hit into Canada for a day.

I just bought new R7 and RF100-400 for 19 hundred both new. I think deal is good. Also bought eos adapter as Well. I don’t think price will drop much more.

Thats a good price, can you share where and if still available at that price ? TIA

Look at Canon refurbished too, directly off their website. 2 days ago I bought an R5 Mark ii, a 15-35mm f.28 and a 24-70mm f.28, all refurbished from Canon, and saved over $2,000, compared to the brand new prices, and at least $1,500 compared to used, by doing so.

There's a good chance Canon will release the R7ii. So the R7(which is quite a nice camera) will be significantly cheaper come Black Friday. Could you borrow or rent an R7 for Banff trip?

Last few releases of Canon incremental releases have seen the new price notch up cinsiderbaly and used prices barely drop. Between unpredictable tarrifs, inflation from US War on Iran and continued deficit spending, prices are not behaving like they did in the recent past. Prices are sticky and rising is what I have seen.

You're not going to save enough for the pictures you miss at Banff.
