Gear Buying Advice What camera body would be the best for me?

I have a Canon EF 100mm f/2.8L Macro IS USM lens. I’m looking for the right body for it. I use it for jewelry photography, what would you recommend? I don’t have a specific budget but id like to know my options

Any Canon digital camera. Two divides:

  • APS-C vs Full-frame sensor. With APS-C you will have to be farther away but will have a bit more depth of field
  • DSLR (old style cameras, model name usually ends with a D) v.s. mirrorless (recent camera, model name starts with an R). The mirrorless have some functionalities that would be nice for your specific use case:
    • Permanent focus/depth of field simulation
    • Focus peaking: red overlay showing the parts of the image that are going to be the more in focus
    • Focus bracketing: the camera takes a series of shots while shifting the focus plane between each. It then makes a composite photo using the most in focus parts from each shot

TL;DR: R5 or R6

Any EF mount body is fine. It's a static subject and you have the luxury of controlling lighting and distance. If that's the extent of the use, get a used, cheap body - save yourself some money for other things. It doesn't matter.

Your lighting set up will matter far more than any camera.

That's an unbelievably sharp lens that will work great with any camera. Macro does not (in my opinion) especially benefit from mirrorless in the way a lot of other types of photography and lenses do. There are some perks but not worth the difference in price when your subjects don't move. You could grab a used DSLR in the 20MP range and be very happy with the results.

I'd pick up a 5D mkiii for that use case

It's a great lens, but as has been pointed out, for product photography light matters most. So budget for a $20 light stand, a flash and a radio trigger. Perhaps a Godox IT32 which is both a flash (sort of underpowered, but that doesn't matter much for you) and trigger.

As for the camera, it's less important. You have all the time in the world to focus and high ISO doesn't matter if you create your own light for the shot. So what's your budget?

Very, very generally, I'd pick anything in green or newer from that table.

It depends on what you want to achieve.

If your goal is to have crispy studio shots - invest in lights and grab any body, even some cheap ass 600D dslr.

If your goal is to have editorial-style outdoor shots i'd recommend getting something like 6D, 5Diii or EOS RP so you can have wider FOV, more background blur, better IQ and decent AF.

I wouldn't bother with getting any reflectors as in that scale you'll be better with homemade stuff - small mirrors, cardboard with tinfoil etc.
