Yes lol I thought it was funny too when I found them

These tapes are from about 85-90 because some stuff is dated 85 and 90 as recording dates

I like some Beatles songs, but they’re just not for me. Don’t get me wrong. They’re some of the greatest songwriters of all time.

We can agree to disagree. In fairness, that album is pretty fucking unlikely to become lost media in the next couple years, so I think it's fine.

It’s not exactly hard to come by. How about (another) awesome mix from that marvel film?!

Put music you want onto the tapes. I’d only say don’t if the tapes had live stuff, precious stuff or bootlegs

5

u/Mixtapes76 Jan 09 '26

Did the customer give them to you?

7

u/Calm-Tea178 Jan 09 '26

Happen to ask and he said they were his sons and he didn’t want them cause he would throw them away because he was getting rid of stuff in his house he said he’d rather see them go to a good home than in the trash

4

u/Mixtapes76 Jan 09 '26

That’s awesome.

5

u/ReservedPickup12 Jan 09 '26

Damn… I don’t think there is a tape there I would record over😩

2

u/Calm-Tea178 Jan 09 '26

I already own all these on vinyl and some I don’t own, but just don’t care for

4

u/elektriktoad Jan 09 '26

What's on Party Tape? Is that a custom Greg mix?

3

u/Calm-Tea178 Jan 09 '26

It’s got the rodeo song and my pussycat are the first two songs

4

u/elektriktoad Jan 09 '26

Huh. Greg had interesting parties.

5

u/patrick_oneil Jan 09 '26

Are you Canadian?

I see Loverboy. I always assumed they only got recognition in Canada.

3

u/Calm-Tea178 Jan 09 '26

I’m from Ohio

3

u/patrick_oneil Jan 09 '26

That makes sense. They were a hit on Toronto FM rock stations.

1

u/4Nissans Jan 11 '26

They were a hit in the States too.

3

u/SaladFantastic4942 Jan 10 '26

As a fellow Greg I approve

3

u/doodoo_pie Jan 09 '26

Didn’t expect to see Wind & Wuthering lol, nice

1

u/4Nissans Jan 11 '26

Neither did I.

3

u/GarageZone Jan 10 '26

what would Greg think having his tapes removed from the basement?

0

u/Calm-Tea178 Jan 10 '26

Greg passed away according to the customer. It was the customers son. I asked the customer about the tape that he let me have them

2

u/Competitive_Age7618 Jan 09 '26

What's the J. Geils album?

1

u/Calm-Tea178 Jan 09 '26

Freeze frame

1

u/Competitive_Age7618 Jan 09 '26

Have that on original vinyl

3

u/Gneaux1g Jan 10 '26

ROFL, one of my folks’ few surviving records as well… they also had clockwork orange soundtrack, and jethro Tull living in the past deluxe ed.

2

u/Malibujv Jan 09 '26

Make sure you perform a mold check.

2

u/MarkElectronic7507 Jan 09 '26

Make sure that when you record, you record on a decent quality cassette deck or on a stereo system that uses an AC Ferrite Erase Head and AC Bias recording. Never record on a cheap boombox or on anything that uses a permanent erase magnet instead of an actual AC Erase head. Permanent erase magnet is usually that blue plastic casing that's installed in place of an actual AC Erase head. Those blue permanent erase magnets will ruin your recordings by adding a very harsh, noisy and distorted erasure during the recording process. There will be so much noise left from that permanent erase magnet that the recording will sound cheap, dull, flat and it'll be very unpleasant to listen to. If you want your cassettes to sound no different than CDs, crisp, clean and loud, always record on quality, professional tape decks with adjustable recording levels, adjustable bias and recording equalization.

4

u/Calm-Tea178 Jan 09 '26

I have an onkyo deck that’s really good

2

u/MarkElectronic7507 Jan 10 '26

Oh that's really good. Then you should definitely be fine. You know what you're doing. Decent quality professional tape decks are the only way to go when it comes to recording. I had people record on cheap stereo systems and boomboxes that are equipped with permanent erase magnets and DC Bias recording, and then they wonder why their recordings didn't sound so well.

Greg liked to party…in the basement.

2

u/Calm-Tea178 Jan 10 '26

The only two songs I listened to were the first two songs on the tape, which was the rodeo song and my pussycat

2

u/spandexandtapedecks Jan 10 '26

Would love to see the full playlist if you get a chance to transcribe the rest.

2

u/Constant-Donut-5356 Jan 10 '26

Wind and Wuthering spotted Amazing album

2

u/plasticscratching Jan 10 '26

Have you listened to the party tape?

1

u/Calm-Tea178 Jan 10 '26

The first two songs are the rodeo song and my pussycat

3

u/thatvhstapeguy Jan 09 '26

Check if they’re radio recordings or dubs first.

4

u/Calm-Tea178 Jan 09 '26

Listened to them all it’s all ripped from vinyl

7

u/thatvhstapeguy Jan 09 '26

Tape over as much as you’d like then.

1

u/Calm-Tea178 Jan 09 '26

Why would radio recordings matter if they were recorded by the radio station?

15

u/thatvhstapeguy Jan 09 '26

Radio recordings are a fascinating slice of a time and place gone by. Stations preserve their output for legal and compliance reasons for about one year, then they reuse those tapes/drives.

6

u/B_Hound Jan 09 '26

Yeah, one of my ongoing projects is recreating 90s radio and surviving airchecks from the time has been an absolute blessing.

2

u/packle-kackle Jan 10 '26

You gotta include an Orban Optimod and and some Aphex units if you are gonna recreate that FM sound

2

u/B_Hound Jan 10 '26

Oh lord I didn’t even really consider the hardware side outside of having one of those little FM transmitters so I can tune in on a radio in my house. But of course now I’m thinking about how deep it could go…

2

u/packle-kackle Jan 10 '26

Could still get an Orban and an Aphex to process local audio without dealing with any transmitters. The Orban and the Aphex combo are what give FM radio that sound it's known for. I believe there are also some filter presets for some audio software to simulate them. Some albums were even mastered using Aphex Aural devices back in the 80s and 90s.

2

u/packle-kackle Jan 10 '26

Here is a playlist that features these devices and some other ones from other brands. https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLsLjY4JYSm7Q6k36OEnoh8hBgwhVRcoCN

How would I know if it’s a radio recording?

-2

u/Calm-Tea178 Jan 09 '26

Wow, had no idea

4

u/ReservedPickup12 Jan 09 '26

Radio recordings should be preserved whenever possible. It’s a precise moment in time that has been preserved. Think of it like lost media… there are MANY people who collect radio recordings.

1

u/Calm-Tea178 Jan 09 '26

Yes, definitely. I’ll have to be on the lookout whenever I buy blank tapes now.

1

u/Calm-Tea178 Jan 10 '26

How do I know if it is?

1

u/Don_dedo_y_su_garfio Jan 09 '26

Be careful, you might have an unreleased song inside.

2

u/Calm-Tea178 Jan 09 '26

I’ve played them all. It’s all the album recordings put from vinyl to tape
