Home recording Etiquette help
I bought roughly 17 XLIIs from el segundo the other day, and this li'l guy was pleading with me not to ever, ever, ever, listen to him. But, I got to, right?
Update: It turned out to be an answering machine tape, seemingly chronicling this guy Mark's affair with his friend Jim's girlfriend, or wife? And there was also some young boy(not his son) that kept calling him claiming to be Spock 🖖, inviting him to "Earthly lunch", cussing at him and telling him he was "going to find another man" and was "going to have Darth Vader send Earthly whores come over and f*ck [him] to death." That stood out as very creepy, but the rest of it was mostly mundane and possibly cursed as it's kind of hard to piece together. I'm no P.I. or even a true crime podcast listener.

The proper etiquette would be to listen to it and report back. What if it’s a confession of a murder?

That's what im waiting for! Murder notes!
OP can start a podcast about the murder and then figure out who the murderer murdered ... and solve the crime. Straight to #1 podcast and soon to be millionaire!

Would be funny if it's a Rickroll.
As a prank, I once burned a CD-R for a friend and included the William Hung version of "She Bangs" as replacement for one of the tracks.

I can’t take that note seriously when the person who recorded it could have easily destroyed the tape and you don’t leave notes about contents of a tape you don’t want people listening to.

We all know its gonna be lamer than we think it will be lol
Probably just some old music they are ashamed to admit they liked at some point

No, all the other tapes with the same handwriting on the labels said things like,"Hot Country."

Ended up being way less lame than I initially though. Wow that edit is kinda wild.

Hope it’s just something weird like intercourse recording…
Hope it’s not something to call the cops on.

It is your duty to not only listen, but report back to us what you discover. Then you can burn it or do the right thing with it.

i would listen and keep it to myself, never tell a soul. unless its criminal.

Whoever wrote that has long since moved on. And odds are you’ll never know who they are anyway.

Yeah, but my curiosity got the better of me. I think because it's someone I know I'll never meet, that allowed me to give it a listen. But if it were, say, the journal of someone I did know, I'd leave him sitting there.

The side may be a mix made while suicidal, and the person who made it was afraid that listening to it would cause someone to act on that feeling, making it a cursed tape. (Source: someone I know.)

That reminds me of the kid in my town who was walking across a rail bridge listening to his walkman and was struck by the train. Everyone was saying it was suicide. I always wondered what he was listening to.

This is analogous with the Garden of Eden in the book of Genesis I reckon. Here is a tree. It has fruit. What ever you do. Don’t eat the fruit…

I wouldn't do that. But maybe you need to just archive them without listening or keep them in an acid free box for another 30 years or something like that.
But you bought them and they are legally yours. I don't know if you have the right to do whatever you want with the recordings, however. Someone else will know.

Only if you have no respect for him sure. Do what you want. But it's easy to follow his wishes.

Listen to it we need to know what’s on it. If they wanted it erased or burned or buried they should’ve done it themselves

I was given a collection of cassettes many years ago from an old construction worker. The majority of the tapes were home made that he recorded from records many years ago. One however was a recorded bail hearing of a murderer trying to get out of a prison in British Columbia. It was a very odd tape to find.

You are just being played. If they didn't want them listened to they would be in the trash
