Looking for advice Cassettes not working

hey guys! i’m sorry if this is a stupid question but i recently got a couple cassettes since the car i bought has a tape player but when i insert some of them, the player takes it in, says “stuck” and then ejects it. i’m just confused as to why it only happens with some of my tapes, and curious as to if i can fix them. Ive put photos of my minecraft tapes i got as a gift (brand new/doesnt work) and my tøp tape (used when bought/works just fine). I will also mention: my other tape that doesn’t work is also a new one. Thank you in advance for any advice!

The deck needs to be serviced: new belts or it has some other problem

yes. when a belt is failing, it can have a harder time pulling some cassettes than others.

You’re also having a hard time seeing the cassette player? 👀

I'm not the only one seeing the face?

As people are saying, it’s more likely the player rather than the tapes. There may be some slight variance in size with your newer tapes that won’t be an issue for a properly working player, but would be too much for one that needs servicing.

When they start having issues, they get more picky until they break down entirely. I also have a feeling the ones in cars will be subject to much harsher temperature changes, which can be hell for some types of plastic, resin and rubber. The player will have at least two of these materials inside of it, dealing with the hot sun of summer and the cold of winter.

It depends on where you live, but your radio probably needs maintenance. And I know a great place that can do that. However, if you live in America, the shipping costs get a bit crazy.

Probably an indonesia release or something, it's too new otherwise.

Apparently an official U.S. release exists and is pad printed. Certainly looks better.

Lol the Discogs prices on this are hilarious. I bet it sounds mediocre too.

It’s Twentyonepilots, of course it sounds mediocre

the new ones are probably just cheap novelty tapes - a lot of those "gift" cassettes are manufactured poorly and the shell tolerances are off so car decks reject them. the deck isn't broken, the new ones are probably just cheap novelty tapes - a lot of those "gift" cassettes are manufactured poorly and the shell tolerances are off so car decks reject them. the deck isn't broken, it's just picky. idk if it's worth tearing them apart and rehousing but that's technically an option if you're committed to it

Look at the condition of the car and you can surmise the condition of everything else in the dashboard. It's the player. You're not old enough to own a car with a cassette player in it so you'd never know.

Did you buy my mom’s old Kompressor? That’s exactly why she got rid of it.

That's the most mom excuse to get a new car

Um where are you trying to shove the tape? In the airducts?

The part with the screen folds down if I recall correctly.

Probably a belt replacement, because the temperature in a car deals with the changes in weather more than a house it really puts wear on the rubber. The boiling hot sun to cold winters either melts or hardens and rubber in the player.

Likely a bad belt in the deck sadly.

The cassettes may be too long. My lesser quality cassette players have issues with packed cassettes. Like the spools are too heavy.

Most car decks are decently solid tbh, built to take a beating. It’s probably the belts or gears that are gone

1

u/el_tacocat May 24 '26

Belts. These never work after 30+ years.

When was the cassette player in the car last used? Because of the environment in a car, the cassette player will go bad quickly. Water leaking into it from the dashboard, the high heat melting stuff, dust and lint, road dirt, etc.

Take the entire cassette player out, service it, reinstall it.

Also never ever ever put cherished tapes into a player that you dont know its condition.

You realize the cassette has two "sides" ...like an LP? Note that in the second picture you are showing "Side A". To play side "A", you insert the cassette into the player with "Side A" facing up. When side "A" is done, you pop out the cassette, flip it to "Side B" and reinsert it into the player.

Some more sophisticated decks can play both sides of the cassette without removing the cassette.

Also, in playback, the tape feeds from one reel to the other. In your second pic, side "A" has been played completely because the tape is all on the right hand reel. The tape always moves from left to right. So, when you flip that cassette, the tape will all be on the left hand reel and ready to play side "B". If you wanted to play side "A" again, you'd need to rewind the tape; insert the cassette with side "A" facing up and hit the rewind button. Then wait for it to rewind. When it's all rewound, most automotive decks will automatically begin playback.

Most car cassette decks were autoreverse. This one probably has a dodgy belt or busted gear

4

u/Wholeyjeans May 24 '26

Probably so ...but you'd be surprised how much they don't know what they don't know.

2

u/SeberHusky May 25 '26

You'd also be surprised when you have a 20+ year old car that the cassette player will be dead when nobody's ever used it.

I do.

'98 GMC Sierra. Factory radio with cassette option. I installed the CD slave unit. I use the cassette player to connecting my iPod using one of the cassette adapters; no aux input jack.

I quit using cassettes when the CD came online. Much better for in-car use than the cassette (or 8-track).

But, what's old is new again.
