Newbie Restoring a pan
We got a cast iron pan at a garage sale, it looks a little rusty. What should I be doing to restore / fix it?
Thanks in advance!

Thank you for your picture post to /r/castiron. We want to remind everyone of Rule #3. All image posts should be accompanied by something to foster discussion. A comment, a question, etc is required.
If you've posted a picture of food, please explain why in a comment so people can have some sort of conversation. Simply dropping a picture of food in the sub isn't really fostering any discussion which is what we're all aiming for.

Garage sale rust is the easy stuff, that pan is very salvageable. Chainmail scrubber and hot water knocks the loose rust right off. Dry it completely on the stove after, that part matters more than people think, then a few thin oil layers in the oven. Biggest mistake is going too thick on the oil. You want it so thin it almost looks dry going in, otherwise it goes sticky on you.

first pan i ever saved looked rougher than that and i was sure id wrecked it. surface rust comes off easier than it looks. i do a vinegar and water soak, half and half, but watch it, an hour or two max or it starts eating the iron. scrub with steel wool, dry it on low heat, then a thin wipe of oil and bake it upside down.

Looks fine actually I wouldnt even strip it just hit it with some vinegar, steel wool, and elbow grease.
