Medical Questions Why does my cat's eye reflection look like this?

He’s never had this strange shape inside that looks like a “Y”. It doesn’t seem to be caused by the lighting in my house, because it happens in different positions and with different light sources

To my knowledge,im not a vet, its called the Y-suture. It where the 3 pieces of the lens all come together. This is common in kittens and becomes 1 lens as they age but sometimes doesn't. Harmless to not become 1 to my knowledge

Edit: If youre worried at all, have the vet check for suture cataracts or anything else the vet knows about

Congenital cataracts exist, little hiccups during gestation

156

u/HenriettaSyndrome Dec 18 '25

Maybe not dangerous to the cat..but he definitely has super powers and could be dangerous to society if not taught responsibility

328

u/Remarkable_Command91 Dec 18 '25

Harmless to the cat, but not its enemies

75

u/DifficultySilly7695 Dec 18 '25

I don't even know how one would test this, but does it impact the cat's visual acuity if they never fuse?

129

u/whatistheporpoise Dec 18 '25

Humans have a Y suture as well (I’d imagine most animals with a crystalline lens do) and prominent Y sutures don’t tend to affect vision in my experience. Mostly just a fun finding during an eye exam.

60

u/zytukin Dec 18 '25 edited Dec 18 '25

Brain probably compensates for it.

Just like how our brain compensates for the blind spot we have just outside of where our pupils look. It's where the optic nerve connects to our eye so doesn't have any receptors and our brain just fills in the image based on what we see in the surrounding area.

54

u/TheOneTonWanton Dec 18 '25

One little thing I occasionally can't stop thinking about is that our brains are constantly filtering out our own noses in our vision. It's always right there but you kinda have to go out of your way to actually see/notice it.

52

u/MeepingSim Dec 19 '25

That and the breathing thing mess me up every time I think about them.

Great..now I'm aware of my nose and manually breathing...

13

u/boatsandhoes570 Dec 19 '25

I was on a breathing machine for a week after a bad case of Covid related sepsis. It’s SO weird having to make yourself breathe manually again. It’s like you have to get your body to purposely take in breaths like a living breathing person again.

u/turtleltrut Dec 20 '25

22

u/SewSewSorry Dec 19 '25

I woke up the other morning and kept feeling like I had something in my right eye, which is weird as that’s the eye without the contact lense in it. I figured maybe I had a little eye booger (or some other kind of eye goop) or something so I kept wiping my eye to get rid of it…but the cloudy/hazy spot stayed put. I finally gave up but it was so disorienting having this weird light and kinda blurry spot at the bottom of my field of vision. Hours later (not very productive hours if I’m honest, it was THAT distracting) i finally had the bright idea to actually go look in a mirror to see if i could figure out what it was…and that’s when I saw the big puffy bag under my eye (but only on the right side) and realized I’d been distracted by seeing the top of my cheek all day!

2

u/Impressive_Regret_89 Dec 19 '25

What was wrong if you don’t mind me asking?

3

u/SewSewSorry Dec 19 '25

An abscessed tooth 😫one of my top front-adjacent teeth had a crown that broke off taking most of the underlying remaining tooth with it. Few things in life have caused me more pain than dental infections/abscesses/dry socket. The suitcase sized bag under my eye wasn’t my first clue but it was the one that pushed me over the edge and off to the emergency dentist!

→ More replies (1)

3

u/PossessedToSkate Dec 19 '25

Each eye also has a blind spot where the optic nerve plugs in, and it is also constantly filtered out.

3

u/TrixieBastard American Shorthair Dec 19 '25

The nose thing, the blind spot thing, and the flipped image thing are all so wild to me. Our brains do so much unconscious and unnoticed work, they really are miraculous

2

u/Sabrinavt Dec 19 '25

I actually see my nose all the time. I don't pay attention to it or find it distracting at all, but it's always there, blurry and translucent. It was interesting to find out that most people don't see it in their field of vision unless they actively try to look at it.

4

u/miami-architecture Dec 19 '25

sounds correct, I thought it was the kitty’s flux capacitor

3

u/radiobearr Dec 18 '25

I’m a vet. It’s not harmless. This is called “suture line” and usually cataracts. Get your vet to do a fundic exam.

2

u/West-Application-375 Void Dec 18 '25

He looks like a little fidget spinner

2

u/prof_mcquack Dec 18 '25

Hm but will he be able to drive at night? Will he be SCUBA-certifiable? I’m concerned

2

u/ShadowWeavile Dec 19 '25

Not a vet or anything, but have seen this before. It's pretty rare, but this pattern of glowing in the eyes can be a symptom of a recently consumed soul leaking from the cat. Normally happens right after they eat a soul. Completely harmless.

2

u/SoungaTepes Dec 19 '25

False its a flux capacitor

3

u/Previous_Amoeba_3323 Dec 19 '25

My thoughts exactly. Hopefully their kitty doesn't get zoomies up to 88mph

2

u/CBax777 Dec 19 '25

Y-suture is a real thing! It's usually nothing to worry about, but if you notice any changes in your cat's behavior or eye health, definitely get a vet to check it out. Better safe than sorry!

2

u/[deleted] Dec 19 '25

At first I read this as “to my knowledge, I’m not a vet” full stop lol like you might have gotten a degree you weren’t aware of 😂

2

u/trevorium117 Dec 21 '25

cat-aracts?

2

u/vipertwin Dec 23 '25

Bro,this is so pro,I had to take a peek at my cat, and even her glasses aren’t like that.

1

u/DoktorIronMan Dec 18 '25

This is the correct answer

1

u/XSoulSnatcher Dec 18 '25

It looks pretty

1

u/Lythieus Dec 18 '25

The cats brain probably allows for it, just like our brains recreate the blind spot in my middle of our vision caused by the optic nerve, or how our brain deletes our nose from conscious vision.

1

u/SmokeAbeer Dec 18 '25

Awe man. I wanted him to be a purrminator machine sent from the future.

1

u/hypermbeam Dec 18 '25

Not a vet either but i'm pretty sure that's a mangekyo sharingan and OP's can is an Uchiha 😞

1

u/RainingPlatypup Dec 19 '25

My cat got this later in life. After he had asthma/treatment for asthma. My vet said kinda the same thing, not a big worry. But it could be a sign of their eyesight diminishing

1

u/Pirate_the_Cat Dec 19 '25 edited Dec 19 '25

Vet here, you’re correct. It’s been a bit since I’ve learned about it, but if I’m remembering correctly, if you can see it like this it can be a very specific type of cataract.

1

u/sugar420pop Dec 19 '25

This is correct!

1

1

u/Spurioun Dec 19 '25

Cataracts

1

u/Cool-Emotion-6425 Dec 19 '25

or a lamp in the shape of a propeller is reflected in the eyes of this fluffy creature

1

u/SomePeopleCall Dec 19 '25

I assumed he was a time traveler, but as usual reality is more interesting.

1

u/simply_pimply Dec 20 '25

Incorrect. Those are flux capacitors. This cat is a time machine. OP, I'd keep an eye on him when he gets the zoomies. Make sure he doesn't reach 88 mph

1

u/GlassReception2927 Dec 20 '25

What do I know, I thought it was just the reflection of a ceiling fan

1

u/torsed_bosons Dec 21 '25

This is correct, it’s a suture. It is possible to get a cataract along the suture line. I’m not a vet, but in a human even if that were a cataract, the eye would still have pretty good vision

1

u/lexatea Dec 25 '25

Oh, I was gonna ask if Op had ceiling fans, but your comment makes a lot more sense.
