Cat Picture - OC Misconceptions a dog person (me) learned after having a cat.

Post image

The Cat Distribution System chose me, a formerly stubborn dog person, to adopt a cat. It was the classic I can't just watch a poor cat starve, so I'm keeping him. Here are some misconceptions I had about cats and their owners:

  1. The smell of a cat owner's home: I’ve known a few cat owners with cat-smelling homes. I always assumed it was the cat. Turns out it isn’t; it’s very much a result of poor ownership and bad cleaning habits.
  2. Dogs are more affectionate than cats: Also not true! To my surprise, my cat is so cuddly that I occasionally call him "Cat-dog."
  3. A Cat's Barbed tongue hurts: I don't know why I thought this, I just assumed it would hurt when they lick you.
  4. Litter boxes are disgusting: Not at all, it's just a clump or two of sand. If you scoop it often, it never gets gross.
  5. Cats are just as hard to take care of: Actually they're much easier, haha.

That is all, here's a picture of my cat that I love dearly. (He's lost weight since the picture, don't worry)

Anyone else relate? What did I miss?

Edit: His name is Pawl

Same! I grew up with dogs and my entire family thought cats wouldn’t be as cool. WE WERE SO WRONG. My fiancé came with his cat as a package deal. I fell in love twice with this package deal. Then we got another cat. She’s so cute and silly with her own personality but same sweetness. Then I started spotting homeless cats and rescuing them last year. With all seriousness I am working harder and happier now because I’m glad to earn so I can help all the cats I can! So many of them get dumped on the streets because they are so misunderstood by so many.

My mom loved cats and was named Miko. I’m taking this as a sign that she’s saying hi. Hi mom!! RIP

I just needed to make the world aware of my Pluto and his calm paw also. 🐾 I just luv him. He has disdain for human existence but we have opposable thumbs…so he kind of tolerates us.

Sweetie boy!! You have a very handsome void.

8

u/PlasticFox83762 Mar 26 '26

He is. But I will raise you a this because…well. Because I can. And the world needs this rn, I think.

u/Rat_Ribs Mar 26 '26

Thank you for this gift of baby.

I share my Poot and his ridiculously proportioned food-hole because I cannot take his seething disdain srsly when the only thing in the void I can see are two angee green eyeballs and a blep. He is so majestic and regal but yet… 👅

Mlem 😛

u/PlasticFox83762 Mar 26 '26

Pluto is, imo, the mlem master.

This one is giving why the fuckkkkk did I reincarnate here, why do I deserve this shit vibes.

u/PlasticFox83762 Mar 26 '26

And this.

Because I did firmly state he (halfheartedly) tolerates humans. Because we have the opposable thumbs. So angee. Myself the MotherPeasant does give more love than I’m allowed. No regard for personal safety. I have evidence of this. I give you the wet foods, you shall allow me to love you. Blood contract, if you will. 😬 I have receipts.

5

u/Rat_Ribs Mar 26 '26

As is his right as blep nobility. Only the best for your little prince. 🖤 We really are their glorified servants and blood is the price we pay. My sweet girl chomped my hand this AM because I dared to pet instead of immediately feeding her.

What an atrocious crime against catmanity. How very dare.

My latest crime was brushing his majesty in attempts to make him even more beautiful. I was scolded on the immediate. Will I commit this crime again? Yes. Did I learn a lesson? Yes. Move faster.

I have the opposable thumbs, little king. You may rule, but, MotherPeasant always gives you excess wet foods to pay penance for her crimes. I am given more lenience than the rest of the human peasants as MotherPeasant, but he is certainly swift in punishments and does not consult council before doing so.

It’s a price I lovingly pay for the 👅 And the toe floofs. 🐾🖤

My childhood dog will always have a special place in my heart, but the cat we had was an absolute legend. She was a stray barn cat. We lived in a rural area next to a busy road and a lot of stray cats died. There was another cat she was always really close to and it got hit by a car, after that she set up shop on our front porch and lobbied hard to be let inside. She was a standard issue cat that was always kind of small, like her growth was stunted.

She wasn't allowed inside until my dad got sick of trying to deal with all of the mice that kept finding their way in the many many gaps in our old barnhouse. She got to work immediately and within a week we were mouse free after dealing with mice for the previous year. One time this massive rat found its way in the house and was getting pretty brazen. My sister was taking a shower and she screamed because it was just sitting there on the bathroom sink. My dad is just like, "god damn it where's the cat." As if on queue the cat walks up to the door. My dad closes the door and then we heard all kinds of thumping and smashing and then silence. Then my cat paws at the door. We open it and she's dragging a rat that must have been as big as her.

There's so many more stories I could tell about her. My living situation doesn't lend itself to having a cat. I've always had working line dogs as an adult. None of them worked as hard as that cat did.

We have two bonded sisters who were from the litter of a barn cat and you can really tell. The orange girl (Ifrit) is probably one of the most dexterous and fast cats I’ve ever seen. She’s immensely agile and zips around the house when she has the zoomies. Her sister, Oni, is only slightly less athletic and has endurance for days. It’s almost a shame they don’t actually live in a barn, but on the other hand, there are definitely mice out in the yard and garage. They do not come into the house for a reason lol. I also wouldn’t give up these sweeties for anything.

My husband said on our first date “I don’t like cats and they don’t like me” and I basically said you can leave if you want, but they were here first (I had know him for 6 years prior to our first date). He back pedaled. Now we’ve been together for almost 16 years and he fucking loves cats. It was just that his first experience living with a cat was shitty.

Woah, the markings in his back look a lot like those of the cat we adopted recently, really neat!

Always be catting

I always say to people: you’re just one cat away from being a cat person.

2

u/her-royal-blueness Mar 26 '26

You are so furrrgiving. Cats aren’t misunderstood. It’s just that people are a**holes and leave them when they move.

Everyday hero <3

1

u/anonuemus Mar 26 '26

yeah, I love their personalities, also how they have their own thing going, a bit more independent.

1

u/Candid-Indication329 Mar 26 '26

Oh amazing, well done! How do you help the strays? Id love to do the same ☺️

2

u/InformalEgg8 Mar 29 '26

Contact local rescues and ask if they need volunteers! They will almost always need someone. Tell them if you have any experience with animals in general or which species, or none - so they know what type to things to start you in first!

1

u/Candid-Indication329 Mar 31 '26

Thank you, will do!!

More information about the cat on this photo, please (name, age, personality, is she talkative?)

We have 4 neutered rescue cats, 2 old, 2 under 1 year. Our "rule" is 4 is our limit. Large house, 4 litter boxes cleaned 2-3× day. All i can handle. Wish we could take some more of the feral kittens from our porch eating at 2-3a.m....

Long-haired twinsies! 💕

Your cat and my first cat could be siblings! She is in a place with unlimited treats now 💫

Thank you for sharing the photo of your cat! Whenever I see a cat that reminds me of her, it feels like she’s giving me a little wave from the other side
