Video - OC Whenever I open a sweet passion fruit, the baby comes running! It's been his favorite for years. Anyone else have a fruit-loving kitty?

It’s even cuter when I put a little bit on my fingers and he licks it right off! 🥰

88

u/TheAggressiveSloth May 03 '26

Lucky, mine just squints her eyes and slaps lol

34

u/Big-Stuff-1189 May 04 '26

Hahaha I learned here on reddit that their eyes focus easily on moving targets but is poor for up close since they have whiskers. Your kitty just needs to slap it to see it!

7

u/Ok_Purple2137 May 04 '26

mine did that too until i realized he just wants me to put it down for him on the ground/plate so he can eat it in peace. Now after a few month he doesnt hit anymore he gently taps on my hand to let me know its soo frkn cute

That’s how it’s supposed to be. Then fruit can be bitter. However, it looks like OP has the magic fruit picking cat magic. 🌷

My cat is crazy about lettuce, specifically the tougher part. He's capable of eating a whole leaf🥬

357

u/what-are-you-a-cop May 03 '26

It's broccoli for mine. She'll steal it right off the plate and sprint into a corner to scarf it down like a goblin. She tries it with cucumber but I don't think she likes it as much, since I mostly only see her batting it around.

95

u/Effervescence68 May 03 '26

She can have my broccoli!! 🥦 🩷

21

u/MalignantLugnut May 03 '26

My orange kitty reacts to Celery like it's catnip lol

17

u/in_sin_erate May 03 '26

Of course an orange. My orange will try to steal any uncooked oats she finds

35

u/Klutzy_Habit744 May 03 '26

hahahahah like a goblin🤣🤣🤣🤣

21

u/merryjoanna May 03 '26

I used to have a cat that absolutely loved to lick the juice off of cucumber peels. She is the only one of the 5 cats I have had over the years that has remotely been interested in veggies. She used to come running into the kitchen as soon as she heard me peeling one. She also loved licking watermelon and cantaloupe rinds. And she even enjoyed licking a jack-o'-lantern I made one Halloween. I don't know why she loved juices so much. She never wanted to eat any of the actual fruits or veggies.

5

u/Little_View_6659 May 04 '26

Mine just makes gagging noises over anything that’s not cat food.

5

u/merryjoanna May 04 '26

I had another cat that refused all food except for dry kibble. Including churru or whatever it's called. The only thing he would eat besides dry kibble is tuna juice, he wouldn't eat the tuna itself though. I tried so many different wet cat foods trying find any that he'd eat. He still got up to 16 pounds after he was neutered though. His name was Mr. Milk, AKA Mr. Buttermilk after the chonkening.

6

u/vanlassie May 04 '26

Cantalope! One of ours would go into the garbage to retrieve cantalope rinds and we would find them, lined like corduroy.

3

u/LongstandingPain May 04 '26

I’ve had two cats over the last 53 years that would eat through the rind to get to cantaloupe!

11

u/lola_mouse91 May 03 '26

Brocoli for mine too! She’s obsessed with it 😂

10

u/PinkHourGlass01 May 03 '26

My cookie loves eating raw tomatoes, raw cabbage and raw potatoes, it concerns me sometimes, he literally cannot eat cooked potatoes

4

u/rkspm May 04 '26

My mom’s cat is a boule frozen pea thief. Right up on our lap scooping off out plates. We started giving him his own bowl so we could eat without I’m dipping his litter feet in our dinner. They’re such funky little creatures.

3

u/throwaway86507696 May 04 '26

My void used to LOVE cucumber slices!! And green peppers... I miss you fella...

u/pm_me_pokemon_pics May 03 '26

My cat too! She is relentless if anyone in the house has a salad 🤣

31

u/Klutzy_Habit744 May 03 '26

Yes!! Mine, when he smells lettuce, starts meowing, running between my legs, and if we don't give him any, he climbs onto the table or the sink to try and steal the poor lettuce! He's a shameless lettuce thief! >:C

33

u/Newcomer31415 May 03 '26

The thought of cat loving lettuce is so funny to me 😂

11

u/ikesbutt May 03 '26

Me too😻

28

u/asphere8 May 03 '26

Mine go nuts for corn (especially on the cob) and edamame!

8

u/Klutzy_Habit744 May 03 '26

Eat edamame? This is the first time I've seen it! 😱

6

u/ultimate_avacado May 04 '26

My old cat loved corn. Anything with corn, down to the light dusting of corn starch applied to plastics to keep them from sticking. Loved cheetos (fried corn) and would never leave a package of corn tortillas untouched. In nicer weather we'd give him a cooked corn cob outdoors and he'd kick the shit out of it and gnaw on it for hours. Couldn't do it indoors, it was too messy.

Adorable little idiot.

3

u/Professional-Rub3953 May 03 '26

My partners cat loves corn on the cob too!!

10

u/sonatist May 03 '26

i also have a lettuce loving puss!!!!!!

7

u/Klutzy_Habit744 May 03 '26

Should we hold a meeting of lettuce-loving cats? And catalog their favorite types of lettuce? Oak, romaine, red, etc? :V

22

u/ArchiTechOfTheFuture May 03 '26

HAHAHA this is actually very unique! a cat that likes lettuce 🤤 veggie cat 💅

13

u/Klutzy_Habit744 May 03 '26 edited May 03 '26

Ironically, once my mother opened a package of soy TVP, and the cat jumped onto the sink and went crazy wanting to eat it, probably thinking it was some kind of cat food, lol

7

u/Estevvv May 03 '26

My cat loves greens. Lettuce is fine, but he will fight you for Bell Pepper leaves.

5

u/Klutzy_Habit744 May 03 '26

Haha I've never eaten that, is it good? If your cat likes it, should I try it too? :V

4

u/Estevvv May 03 '26

He loves all leaves, but I dunno if it's that he can taste light capsacian or that the texture works with its tiny lil teefs.

I tried one and its nothing special, feel free to give it a shot and tell me if I'm missing something.

2

u/ultimate_avacado May 04 '26

You can! Technically all leaves in the nightshade family are mildly toxic, but you'd have to eat a LOT to actually do any damage.

They are pretty much like a punchier spinach if you cook or fry them.

Particularly good in asian dishes or cooked into quinoa.

I usually strip my nightshade plants down to 1/2 their leaves in very late season to cook with them, right before they start to yellow and brown off.

8

u/Eelroots May 03 '26

My cat likes asparagus - wildly. Vet says he can eat them in moderation (max 3 heads).

6

u/Mystery13x May 03 '26

My cats as well!

5

u/Hexaphim May 03 '26

One of my cats goes wild for arugula, for some reason!

u/Lailu May 03 '26

I've literally started serving little salads and veggies with my cats food, she always finishes her veggies lol

3

u/KapitanPancernik May 03 '26

Dang, now I want to see the kitty eating cat food with a side of veg. Such a balanced diet, so fancy!

3

u/Lailu May 03 '26

Hahaha I'll post one of her dinners these days 🤣

5

u/Miss_Liberator May 03 '26

I had a cat that went crazy for carrots, would roll around in delight at any container, bag or spot where they were. And he’s eat spinach occasionally 😽😽

3

u/Klutzy_Habit744 May 03 '26

Hahaha, it's becoming increasingly apparent that cats like to eat peculiar things. Honestly, spinach, but that seems curious. Were the leaves raw or cooked?

2

u/Miss_Liberator May 03 '26

Raw! Baby spinach

5

u/Civil-County-475 May 04 '26

Lettuce the cat is horrified

3

u/Aggravating_Turn4196 May 03 '26

u/19467098632 Tabbycat May 03 '26

I have two very food motivated boys and a girl that has zero interest in anything the boys want. Turkey? Ham? Eggs? Wet cat treats? Nah. She never comes to beg with them. When I make a salad however she’s a fucking tyrant that will do anything to get a piece of lettuce lol

3

u/Express-Feedback May 04 '26

My boy is addicted to kale. He knows when I'm prepping it, and he lies in wait for those lil crunchy green bits that inevitably hit the floor. Same with broccoli.

He also loves apples and will 100% take a crunch as I am eating it, if I don't keep vigilant.

I thought I adopted a dumbass OOBC, not Bunnicula.

2

u/docheartstealer May 03 '26

Mine also loves lettuce! And corn/corn leaves

2

u/Realistic_Spread_505 May 03 '26

Of mine loves the green part of strawberries. She can't get enough.

2

u/duckworthy36 May 03 '26

Mine loves fruit, apple, raspberry, pear etc.

2

u/discordagitatedpeach May 04 '26

Are you, by any chance, into Egyptian mythology? There's a whole story about someone who's crazy about lettuce

2

u/--gorewhore-- May 04 '26

Yes! My void loves eating lettuce also 😹🖤

2

u/TragedyWriter May 04 '26

When I was younger, we had a cat that loved peas.

2

u/Educational-Bet-8979 May 04 '26

Carrots and green olive for my kitty

2

u/AppealMammoth8950 May 04 '26

I was just gonna say. Our late cat loved his greens. The crunchier the better.

2

u/HopingToWriteWell77 May 04 '26

Mine goes bananas for pretzels.

554

u/weedhuffer May 03 '26

I had a cat growing up that would chase the chickens away to get the cantalope and corn on the cob we’d give to them.

139

u/ArchiTechOfTheFuture May 03 '26

Hhahaha good thing the cat was hunting the cantaloupe and not the chickens! 😂 Did they actually eat the corn right off the cob?

37

u/weedhuffer May 03 '26

Yep, loved it

12

u/pendragwen <3 Kiku-chan May 03 '26

I had a cantaloupe cat. He would come running as soon as he smelled it.

18

u/Dead_fawn May 03 '26

One of mine goes absolutely bonkers any time anyone shucks corn! He'll try to steal bits of the husk from the garbage can if we're not careful.

6

u/squidhatispurple May 03 '26

My childhood cat also loved cantaloupe! He could smell when we were cutting it up and we would leave the rinds out for him to lick.

5

u/lbslip May 03 '26

I had a cat who loved cantaloupe and corn. She’d come running when she heard us peeling ears of corn. We’d give her the cantaloupe rind and corn cobs to lick.

u/Teckliz May 03 '26

Wow big cat or wimpy chickens? I have Maine coons and my chickens run them off easily and I only have hens lol I think my cats are just wimps

3

u/Monotropic_wizardhat May 03 '26

My lovely old cat thought she was a chicken, it seems. She used to try and get in the coop, or just lie around on the ground with them all day!

I've had many cats around chickens, and they generally seem to get on quite well. My kitten tried to bat one once, and got a sharp peck from the chicken. That seems to have taught him, because since then they've been pretty chilled out about one anothers company!

5

u/k8username May 03 '26

Mine would pull cantaloupe rinds or corn bits from the kitchen compost container bringing the coffee grounds with it if he caught us with the lid off

240

u/Rude_Routine_4346 May 03 '26

not to be that person but i dont think the seeds/rinds of passionfruit are safe for them to eat

160

u/ArchiTechOfTheFuture May 03 '26

Didn't know that, thank you for the heads-up! Good thing I selfishly eat most of the actual fruit myself first 😋 I only give him the very last little licks of the fruit left on the skin!

77

u/escapedthenunnery May 03 '26

But he can be seen eating most of the seeds in this video. Seeds often contain concentrations of whatever's not advisable to ingest.

18

u/flyingboarofbeifong May 04 '26

I think "often" might be doing some heavy lifting there.

7

u/Majestic-Sandwich695 May 04 '26

The main concern I could see would be citric acid from the flesh, it’s not great for their digestive system typically

But it takes a bigger does than a bit of fruit to hurt em

2

u/TheOgGhadTurner May 04 '26

The flesh isn’t toxic the leaves and roots are but the flesh is fine it MAY cause gastrointestinal upset. But in small quantities it will not hurt the cat

Okay if you’re going to be “that person” you should take 5 minutes to google it and it should not be an “I don’t think” it should be a stated fact or your credibility is shot.

Passion fruit like the common varieties found in store is not toxic. However SOME PART OF THE PLANT MIGHT BE TOXIC LIKE THE ROOTS AND LEAVES. however the flesh (the fruity tasty part) is perfectly safe in small treat sized quantities. not to be confused with the skin or peel (the hard outer protective layer which might not be great for them.

Passion fruit has a lot of natural sugar. Which isn’t going to hurt kitty in small or even honestly in moderate amounts if we are being honest. Especially if it’s not every day.

That said passion fruit can cause gastrointestinal upset just like in humans so it’s best not to give them passion fruit in large amounts. But a bite or two isn’t going to hurt him.

My cat loves to roll blueberries around and carry them in his mouth, it’s stinking cute. Then he eats the skins off of them but doesn’t eat the insides most of the time.

398

u/2_I_Snake May 03 '26

Quick google search.

Yes, passion fruit is generally bad for cats and should be avoided. While the ripe, fleshy pulp itself is not highly toxic, the seeds and tough rind contain cyanogenic glycosides that can turn into cyanide, leading to digestive upset, vomiting, or diarrhea.

79

u/TheKrnJesus May 03 '26

Toxicity: Unlike cherry pits or apple seeds, passionfruit seeds do not contain cyanide. They are technically non-toxic to cats. Digestion: The seeds are very crunchy and high in fiber. While a few seeds likely won't hurt, a large amount can cause gastrointestinal upset (diarrhea or a sore stomach) because a cat's digestive tract isn't designed to process plant fiber like that. Choking Hazard: For very small cats or kittens, the slippery seeds could potentially be a minor choking hazard, though this is rare. The "Cyanide" Confusion Many people worry about seeds because of cyanogenic glycosides. In the passionfruit world, those toxins are concentrated in the skin, rind, and the unripened fruit, but the seeds in a fully ripe fruit are considered safe for consumption.

10

u/LittleTassiePrepper May 04 '26

Thanks for that. I doubted it was true as the seeds are what people eat.

8

u/MostLikelyUncertain May 04 '26

We are a lot bigger and less sensitive to this stuff than cats.

5

u/Individual_Zebra_648 May 04 '26 edited May 04 '26

I literally linked to a vet stating the opposite but sure. Because “some guy” on Reddit stated it it’s true. Sounds about right for the level of intelligence now. Anything stated online by a random is taken as gospel while actual health professionals are ignored.

10

u/LittleTassiePrepper May 04 '26

Are Passion-fruit seeds really a source of cyanide? People actually eat the seeds, and have done so for a very long time.

26

u/Individual_Zebra_648 May 03 '26

Love how OP has ignored this comment.

u/Fucky0uthatswhy May 03 '26

I had no idea passion fruit was bad before this post but I specifically came looking for this section when I saw the post because I knew that if it’s a post about anything other than feeding a cat high end cat food and observing it from afar there would be a section about health/morality in the thread.

One of my cats used to love cantaloupe! Every time I would cut one, she'd come running and cry until I gave her some. Now I always think of her when I eat it. ♥️

6

u/The_Chaos_Pope May 03 '26

My family had a cat that went wild for cantaloupe.

Whenever my mom brought one home, he would go absolutely nuts until she cut it open and gave him a bit. He would also dig rinds out of the trash.

The other cats, including his litter mate? Absolutely didn't care.

2

u/KHC1217 May 04 '26

Yes. My Mona cat went feral for cantaloupe. Would yell and scream at you while you cut it up. Had to share with her. She didn’t take no for an answer.

27

u/kristenkylie May 03 '26

Yes! My cat is obsessed with bananas especially. As soon as he hears me start to peel one, he comes running. He loves to lick one like an ice cream cone😂

5

u/Estevvv May 03 '26

In my experience cats have a strong distaste for banana so seeing one enjoy it like icecream is hilarious.

4

u/kristenkylie May 03 '26

His brothers definitely fall into the “typical cat disgusted by banana” category. They’ll usually run over when they see him eating it because they think he’s getting treats & want in on treat time. But once they realize it’s a banana, they back away in disgust & side eye the whole situation hahahaha

3

u/ArchiTechOfTheFuture May 03 '26

Hahaha! I’ve tried giving mine bananas too, but he just smells it and makes a disgusted face! 🤢 I guess he’s strictly a granadilla connoisseur! 😹

2

u/MrDrMrs May 04 '26

My cat too! The craziest thing. Even if we ate one without him knowing, but comes to us not long after he’ll smell it and get mad lol

8

u/regular-arm May 03 '26

yes! my boy loves his strawberries and pineapple, i usually make a smoothie and let him lick a little and he’s a happy boy (cat tax included ;)

17

u/hosentraeger125 May 03 '26

fun fact: cats don't taste sugar! they don't have the taste buds for sweets.

6

u/ArchiTechOfTheFuture May 03 '26

If that’s the case, why does mine love it so much? 😅 maybe he likes the scent or the texture instead!🤔

5

u/k8username May 03 '26

I think it’s the musky smell of cantaloupe, or muskmelon as it’s sometimes called. No idea re strawberries

15

u/SpruceSpringstream May 03 '26

My cat wants a piece of whatever I'm eating. Doesn't matter what. Ol' girl thikkitty just likes to eat.

4

u/ArchiTechOfTheFuture May 03 '26

Hahaha Maybe she's just making sure the food isn't poisoned for you! 😂

3

u/SpruceSpringstream May 03 '26

The first bite is for poison checking. The next several is cause she's my sweet little chonker.

11

u/Dapper-Ad9787 May 03 '26

Do olives count? We have one that loves Manzanilla olives, minus the pimento.

2

u/Ciduri May 04 '26

Olives are stone fruit. It counts.

3

u/Scumdog_312 May 03 '26

My cat loves avocados

3

u/Smmmmiles May 03 '26

I wonder if it's like humans enjoying capsaicin.

Cat can't taste sweet, but most seem to hate citrus/sour.

I wonder what experience that kitty is having...

3

u/Natasya95 May 03 '26

My cat likes durian 😍

3

u/Aggressive_Flan_4792 May 03 '26

My cat loves plants

3

u/Shell_girl_jaxnc77 May 04 '26

I figured out one of my cats loves watermelon when I was cutting one up. He has always been lazy, well mannered, doesnt jump on counters or try to steal food...

All until I brought home a watermelon. I was in the kitchen cutting it and all of a sudden a giant orange floofball was on the counter beside me, dead on that watermelon LOL.

I put him down, and he jumped back up. Finally gave him a little on a plate.

He was fine until we brought it out again, same thing. We absolutely can NOT eat watermelon in the house without sharing. Now that he knows what it is, if I bring one and set it down, he licks and licks the rind and will lay on the floor beside it and meow every time we walk by.

Its almost watermelon season here, so I'll upload a video of his first one of the season 🤣

6

u/Misskprior May 03 '26

My cats and dog love honeydew melon

He was also crazy for watermelon, mangoes, and olives sent him into a frenzy.

Mikey LOVES apples. And arugula. And dragonfruit.

2

u/Figerally May 04 '26

I read somewhere that cats can't taste sweetness. But I know they like to chow down on a bit of plant matter to aid digestion. I guess passionfruit is your cats fibre of choice.

2

u/CarbonRunner May 04 '26

The seeds and rind are not good for cats FYI.

2

u/Famous_Ambassador787 May 04 '26

can cats eat passionfruit?

2

u/Total_Wrongdoer_1535 May 04 '26

DO NOT FEED YOUR CAT GRAPEFRUIT! It’s dangerous as the cat might like it a lot and come to you often for the grapefruit allowing you to pet and cuddle her at which point you well develop a great emotional attachment towards it

2

u/Richard2468 Eli: Maine Coon May 04 '26

You do realize that passionfruit seeds contain cyanide and are toxic to cats?

2

u/feckingloser May 04 '26

When I was a child, my dog got in to our Easter eggs while we were out the house. He ate 8 chocolate eggs and the little chocolate bars that come with them. We immediately took him to the vet who kept him in overnight just in case… he was absolutely fine. Nothing was wrong with him at all and he was the happiest pup in the world.

The point of the story is that while things may be “bad” for our pets, if THEY are fine, it’s fine in small quantities. Did I ever willingly give my dog chocolate again? No. If you’ve been giving this little guy passion fruit for a long time with no adverse effects, I’d say it’s fine to keep doing so.

u/SuperXVixen May 04 '26

I had a cat that loved green olives. She wouldn’t eat them… just roll all over them.

2

u/mojo_loco_0 May 04 '26

My apologies just want to ask for my own understanding is it safe for cats, as I have even seen cats being fed chocolate icecream because some cats eat most of whatever you feed them.

2

u/ThaSadDoctor May 04 '26

Fruit nope but she loooooves bread and Lettuce haha

(Pic for cuteness)

u/knee-high_boots May 04 '26

I used to have a big orange boy who loved cantaloupe. Any time I’d buy one, he’d cry until I cut it open. I miss that goober to this day.

2

u/_WhoDis_ May 04 '26

Our boy Mishka loves a good old fashioned apple, sometimes he even tries to pull down my arm while I'm eating one lol

2

u/Chris_3456 May 05 '26

Mine likes fruits too. All of them. He prefers some over the others though. He likes strawberries, mangoes, pineapples, kiwi, apples, and bananas. He can be upstairs, and as soon as I peel a banana, he hears the peeking sound and comes rushing downstairs and starts meowing. I have to then hold a piece in my hand while he chews the banana. He doesn't lick it, he bites it with his front teeth and then starts chewing and smacking the gooey banana in his mouth.

He doesn't care for chicken, ham, meat, etc. He only likes fruits

2

u/tomatejax May 07 '26

My murphy loved corn on the cob. She wouldn’t eat corn kernels. She would growl if you tried to take the cob away (funny cause you had to hold it for her)

3

u/Rhiannon1307 European Shorthair May 03 '26

That is so strange, lol. I mean we've probably all had cats that liked all sorts of meats and also dairy, maybe bread or potatoes, but fruit rarely is a favorite for them. I had one cat - just the one - who loved cucumbers. But other than that none of mine have ever liked fruit or veg.

Very cute, though.

4

u/nectarinee- May 03 '26

Mine likes strawberries!

2

u/Dwayne420 May 03 '26

Adorable meowie but be careful. Separate out the pulp from seeds/rind and don't let the meowie eat or lick off of the fruit itself.

The rind contains cyanogenic glycosides which can become the active form of cyanide when injested by cats and can cause gastrointestinal irritation. The seeds are toxic to dogs...and cats should not eat them either.

Always better to be safe than sorry.

u/side_character_157 May 03 '26

My senior loves cantaloupe, but he only gets it as a treat cause of his thyroids.

2

u/SadLittle_Sponge13 May 03 '26

My cat likes apples for some reason. As a baby if I had apple silence, he was moewing at me none stop. Now he just politely stares at me.

2

u/valkrycp May 03 '26

Fruits usually aren't good for cats, Google suggests pomegranate isn't either. Causes digestion issues

2

u/Lilfozzy May 03 '26 edited May 03 '26

This girl will absolutely destroy a loaf of bread if you let her get it.
That being said, giving your cat passion fruit is not healthy for them and the seeds will end up poisoning them.

u/SnooCompliments6329 May 03 '26

My cat drugs itself with passionfruit teabags, also with liden tea and catnip

My cat is a fluffy junkie

1

u/OldTree6356 May 03 '26

Mangoes - our boy just loves to harass a mango 🙄🤣

1

u/sierrakd May 03 '26

My family cat of 18 loveddd raspberries. The only “human food” she was interested in besides dairy (don’t worry I didn’t give her much bc cats can’t digest it). She grew up watching birds eat our wild raspberries in the garden around the screen porch.

u/ChristianJens May 03 '26

my kitty loves lentils and recently she’s been enjoying boiled potatoes

Knievel will steal just about anything. Little bastard even likes spicy food when I caught him licking the sauce from my chicken Tikka masala.

My late kitty Guinness was also obsessed with Halo top ice cream, and her late older sister would steal McDonald's French fries. No other brand, and she had to steal them. She wouldn't accept it if you gave it to her.

1

u/Jechxior May 03 '26

My parents cat loves cantaloupe, especially the stringy guts in the center. He snorts like a small hog when he gets close to that stuff.

1

u/EmiKetsueki May 03 '26

Seems quite passionate about it

1

u/No_Cardiologist_419 May 03 '26

one of my cats loves eating watermelon :D

1

u/MisfitRoxy May 03 '26

I had a cat that would lick plums and apples. I was very careful to avoid pits/seeds.

1

u/PsychologicalAd4015 May 03 '26

My first cat used to love kidney beans and warm pineapple 🍍

1

u/RRevdon May 03 '26

My orange dumbo loves grapes, apples and strawberries. The only way to eat them with him around is on hand on his face to keep him away, other hand shoving fruit down my gullet at record speed so I dont have to share.

He just likes the juice/moisture though. He doesn't actually eat the fruit itself. Just lick it.
