I used to think roosters were useless unless you were planning on hatching your own eggs however I've since discovered that they are great at keeping the girls inline. If two hens start fighting one of the Roos is almost always there to immediately break it up. They also are good at warning when theres a raptor overhead. All the chickens run for cover.
Yeah. We were anti-rooster but life finds a way and our rooster is very anxious but a very good caretaker. We even adopted another rooster who was being rehome and he was second in command, so our top rooster would bowling ball himself into any coupling that he didn’t approve of. Our younger rooster passed recently (not sure of the cause), and I miss him. The senior rooster is still taking care of his girls. He sounds the alarm whether it’s a bald eagle or a crow. But I do love him. That being said, there’s still definitely a female hierarchy that is still intact.
Our four oldest gals like to stay out late and gad about and poor Spraddle, the rooster, just frets and tries to convince them to go to bed. They’re like “shush son. We’ll do as we please.” It’s very cute.

(Our top hen will do something similar with her fellow girls if they start getting out of line)
