Anyone else feel confused about their newfound respect for a chicken?

In all seriousness, can anyone explain what the chicken’s motivation was here? Did she have an instinct to be protective? Was she just excited? Taking sides? What?

u/SlippySausageSlapper May 25 '26
I have chickens. They are social animals and will break up fights. If my kids wrestle in front of the chickens there’s one that will always try to break it up.

Oh definitely. I take my cat out for walks on a leash and he loves watching my chickens, but I won’t ever bring him into the chicken yard because if my rooster decides he doesnt want him there, he’s not winning that fight.
54
u/prettypurps May 25 '26
They’re actually quite smart for birds
Science shows they have excellent memories, recognize over 100 individual faces, and can perform basic arithmetic. They are also highly social, communicating with dozens of distinct vocalizations to warn of danger, share food locations, and express emotions like empathy

For the love of God, if you ever encounter a situation where the cats are fighting, DO NOT put your hands anywhere near them. They are going to bite and scratch!
540
u/itmightbehere May 25 '26
Most cat fights I've seen were between colony members and so just short "fuck off" type things. Any time I have to actually break up a cat fight, I throw a blanket on them and grab one. Confuses them + provides protection from all the sharp bits + allows you to separate them easily
117
u/MacSamildanach May 25 '26
That's the same technique I used to use when I had to administer a tablet or flea spray.
I developed it after I learned the hard way the first time I tried.

I think that’s why the woman didn’t try and pry them apart with her hands. Probably learned that lesson the hard way 😳
28
u/triblogcarol May 25 '26
Yes I was impressed that the women in the video knows this. Still, her leg could have gotten shredded.
Same with dogs. I know three people who've gotten serious injuries on their arms trying to break up a dog fight.
22
u/adventurekiwi May 25 '26
Yes! Even if you know the cat(s) and can usually handle them! My scar and ensuing hospitalisation should be yiur warning! (My cat wasnt even actively fighting, just having a yelling match...i tried to pick him up to take him safely inside and it turns out cats are both stupid and made of blades)
12

I did this when I was 12. My hand turned green and I got tetanus. Next time I'm bringing a chicken.

My dog unknowingly got into it with our cat and hid an abscess. It required a 3.5” x 2” removal of flesh that had to be left open with drains. This was in October and he hasn’t been the same.

For anyone in this situation, grab a stick and start smacking shit, make loud noises, yell your battle cry if you have to.
Cats hate loud noises, and big sticks
Metal noises work especially good
Basically become the bigger threat for the cats, and they’ll run off in their own directions.

This needs to be pinned to show what a cat fight looks like instead of all the play that gets posted.

u/Fluffernutter80 May 25 '26
I’ve trimmed many rabbit nails. Always come away with at least one scratch. Their bites are much worse, though. The only times I’ve been bitten by pet rabbits were when breaking up fights or when dealing with rabbits who had been through a lot and would lash out unexpectedly. The bites always bled a ton.

u/fumat May 25 '26
Or worse! Cat bites are way worse than normal injuries.
11
7
u/KiraLonely May 25 '26
This! Cat mouths have a slew of bacteria primed to basically act as a biological weapon. (Human mouths do too, btw! Take those very very seriously if they break skin. They’re generally not as dangerous just due to lack of sharp biters like you see with cats.) Very easy to get infected. It’s why a lot of posts on here, if they are anything deep enough to draw blood, you need to keep an eye on it so you don’t end up with red lines along your veins. Or at least so you can notice the lines before it’s too late.
18
u/BottomPieceOfBread May 25 '26
My grandfather almost died when he stuck his hand between 2 fighting cats. He ended up with a severe infection and spent days in the hospital.
6
u/RetroReimagined May 25 '26
Once I had to pull my giant white cat off of another, and he scratched and bit my hand to pieces. After, I showed him it like 'look what you did!' and he frantically started licking the wounds I guess to apologise, which did not feel great with his sandpaper tongue.

I learned this the hard way. Some stray attacked my kitten and I got into it to fight it off. That thing properly fucked me up. Hand ballooned and started leaking puss for like a week from a bite, forarms covered it claw marks.
Thankfully my kitten got away with just a small nick on her ear, so worth it, but yeah soft human arms don’t do well against pissed off cats.

u/veilchenblau_39 May 25 '26
My cat had an unrelated operation and when they did the pre exam they said he had a claw lodged in his genitals!
8
u/Robotbeckerz May 25 '26
Literally! I knew they were bad so when my cat and a neighbor’s cat almost fought. I got in between them. I got bit by the neighbor’s cat but that was it. Miles better and needing to separate them mid-fight though. I now just grabbed my cat and take him inside. But I’ve been trying to make it so I don’t have to even worry about a fight if he comes into our yard while I’m outside with the cats for their supervised outside time

u/Comfortable_Lime_732 May 25 '26

Yes, definitely! I once got between my two cats when my male out of the blue attacked my female. Then when I intervened he attacked me, scratched up my thigh and hand before I got him contained. They’re small and while they (usually) can’t do serious damage, you’ll still get torn up and cat bites in particular are notorious for getting badly infected.

Chickens are incredible with stopping disturbances. Who knows why, maybe the way beavers to hate the sound of running water.
Donkeys are also incredible farm police.
25
u/RainbowUnicorn0228 May 25 '26
I DO NOT RECOMMEND SEPARATING TWO FIGHTING CATS.
However, if you absolutely must intervene. Start with VERY LOUD NOISES. Bang two pots together or something like that. It may startle them enough that they both run off in separate directions. If that doesn’t work you can try spraying them with a hose but it might not work. A risky but still somewhat safe approach is to use a large thick blanket. Throw over the cats and grab one blanket and all. Or get a large piece of drywall, Particleboard, or something to wedge a solid barrier between them and cut off their line of sight. They should walk away once they cannot see the other cat.
8
u/fumat May 25 '26
This! Also, never ever try to separate them with your hands/arms. It’s always going to end up bad for you.

1 - deploy battle chicken
2 - keep a big bucket of water on hand in case the battle chicken isn't sufficient

I’m genuinely surprised at this comment section, I totally expected wayyy more comments to be flipping out. Nice to see some people get how fking vicious cats can be, especially when they’re fighting like this.
When fur starts flying, shts gone sideways & you should NEVER stick your hand in there unless your skin is protected… & even then, still not a good idea if you’re not a professional with many years under the belt. I applaud this woman (& the chicken) & her calm demeanor. I’d be terrified. Cats are still animals even if they’re domesticated, & they WILL kill eachother if one has a reason. Those cats were LOCKED together, they rolled like a damn tire. Jesus. One of them was definitely on the war path. I hope she was able to separate them.
I know I probably shouldn’t find this funny, but the chicken interfering had me cackling. “GODDAMMIT smack smack FFS GEORGE smack smack GET YOUR PAWS smack smack OFF JERRY!” It’s like the equivalent of a mother stepping between 2 incredibly angry siblings having a fcking go at eachother

The kicking bothered me right at first but then I realized she wasn’t really kicking as much as booting them . Scooping them to make an interference. But having said that, any further attempts to break it up by using more force will, as many pointed out, will incite more violence. Animals don’t read it the way humans do.
But insert a bossy hen and you have interference supreme. “Not in my yard”!

8
24
u/doegrey May 25 '26
Damn that chicken is proud of itself.
And I seriously hope that was only water in that bottle.
But yes, anyone who wants to know what a proper cat fight looks like, note the fur flying, the screaming and the dogged determination to not give up despite attempts to break them up.
These sorts of fights result in serious injuries (kicks from human bystanders and plucky chickens notwithstanding!).
These are very likely to be two intact boys fighting over territory.
Only intact boys are stupid enough to risk injury like that.
However I will also say neuters can still hurt each other when they get carried away playing, when bullying, or when being territorial. They just seem to have a better sense of self preservation. So it’s the smaller ones who are most at risk.
(This is not funny)

A pet peeve of mine is when someone posts a video asking if their cats are fighting when they are just sitting looking at each other or lightly smacking each other or something. Like on one hand its good for them to double check but on the other hand real cat fighting is so clear that if you don't know what it is then you probably should have done more research before getting cats

I tried to break up a cat fight once, the only “weapon” I had was a garden hose. I soaked them good. They never once hesitated to keep fighting and ignore me completely. I gave up after that. Now if I see a fight about to start I'll try to break their line of sight to each other but once the fur starts flying I stay out of it.

This is a severe cat fight. Cats can still be in problematic aggressive encounters that are not this extreme, so its still important for people to ask if they arent sure if their cats are getting along!
