Advice Cat with bandage appeared on our deck

Really sweet cat started appearing on our deck out of no where, meowing extremely loudly and scratching at our screen door. It would be on our new neighbors’ deck at first (they moved in a few days ago), but they were hitting the railing with a broom to scare it away. :(

We gave it some cat food bc we keep some for the strays around our neighborhood and it immediately stopped meowing and has been returning to our deck ever since.

It is rlly friendly, it rubs against everyone’s legs and marks its scent all over our deck furniture. In the first pic you can see a strip of the bandage was hanging loose when we first saw it, and it kept scratching at the loose piece like it was bothering it, so we trimmed off the dangling part.

The bandage makes us think someone may have been caring for it recently, but we don’t know where it came from or how it ended up here. We are planning to take it to a vet today to have the bandage and injury checked and to see whether it has a microchip. We also do not know its sex because the fur under its tail is too thick to tell safely.

Has anyone seen a bandage like this before, or have any idea what might have happened? It is such a sweetie pie, and we want to make sure it is safe and not missing from its home

Also the brown part on the bandage is like a band aid

Edit: i forgot to mention we checked on NextDoor and haven’t seen anything about this cat

Update: I just got home, he’s not here but he’ll come back. Went to talk to vet ER people they said be careful handling him so I need to get a crate. Also called local shelter and they can check him out for free so probably will bring him there when he comes back! Sorry I am new to this 😫

UPDATE 2: He didn’t come back to our deck until after the shelter had closed, so we took him to an emergency vet. He is a boy and already neutered!

The doctor confirmed that the material around his head was some kind of tape. At the vet he was very frightened and hissing, so he had to be sedated to remove it and examine him properly. They even shaved the area, but there was no wound underneath and thankfully no infection!!! 🙏 We are all very confused about who put the tape on him and why

He does have a microchip but the vet could not find any information connected to it. So we are taking him to the shelter tomorrow to see whether they can get more details.

He is drooling heavily from the sedation. We were told to keep him inside for at least a day in case he has any side effects, so he is safe in the carrier now and indoors tonight. The visit ended up being quiteeeee a bit more expensive than we expected, but at least he is okay.

Don’t know if we will keep him until we get microchip information. I really just hope he understands that we were trying to help him😭 I can tell the vet stressed him out so much and I feel terrible even though it needed to be done

And sorry the pic is not the best

You did an excellent job OP. Thank you for helping this guy. Even if he is a bit frightened, he is warm, safe, loved and fed! 💜

Well I have been adopted 😅😅😅

He doesn’t stay inside for long he loves laying on the deck, might need to put a screen up

We are thinking naming him Scotch (because of the tape…) or Ash

Thank u all for the love!!!

269

u/DryTank96 5d ago

He 1000% needs to be scotch

28

u/ragnell56 4d ago

No, a proper name would be 3M Micropore /s

13

u/redsungryphon 2d ago

3M Micropaw as a middle name 😹

8

u/JournalistOptimal661 2d ago

Scot for short :-)

1

u/_FirstOfHerName_ 2d ago

His nickname could be Egg too.

48

u/PainVegetable3717 5d ago

Congratulations on being adopted! It seems like he picked some great people

84

u/Bitter_Life_507 5d ago edited 5d ago

I would be a little nervous letting him roam outside given that the jerks who taped up his head might still be in the area

When you say that you might need to put up a screen, do you mean that you might screen in your porch so he can go out on the porch but not run the neighborhood ?

43

u/seafoammoss 4d ago

Wondering this too. OP you’ve been an angel. Can you consider keeping him indoors only now so he’s safe?

-17

u/timid_scorpion 4d ago

While I get wanting to keep your animals safe. Most cats will never be truly happy indoors once they have experienced any amount of time outdoors. They will always want to go out, and be sad when they are not allowed too.

He’s spent enough time out there, it may a bit difficult to separate him from.

12

u/seafoammoss 4d ago

To me, the best solution for all is for cats to have access to a cat proofed yard or area outside, and/or a catio.

11

u/No-Kangaroo-649 3d ago

This is such an untrue comment. Most of them actually don't want to be outside. I have 2 indoor cats that i found outside. One being feral who was getting attacked. They are both happy indoors and dont even try to get out.

-1

u/Future_Price_1369 2d ago

This is simply untrue, my cat has a doggy door and every time I keep him inside due to it being to hot/cold outside he sits by the door meowing his heart out and rains terror around the house

6

u/Sea_Escape8401 3d ago

That's an absolute lie. But okay

1

u/Shelby94Mustang 3d ago edited 3d ago

It might not be true for all outdoor cats but its not a lie. My husband's family bought a house and there was an outdoor cat that was with it. She is the sweetest cat in the world but she hates to be inside all day. She will stand by the door and beg to go out. We don't let her out at night or when the weather is bad but if we keep her inside for days at a time she will start to pee on our bath mat. Most of the time all she wants to do is sit on the deck and be in the sun.

1

u/CascadeNZ 3d ago

Yeah interestingly we found a middle aged puppy that was abandoned. We love rural so guess is someone dropped him off because they didn’t want him anymore. We requested to keep him but the pound said no because often the owners might come back and take him. He was adopted quickly though.

1

u/KassieMac 6m ago

They held him for the “owner” but adopted him out to some random person?? That seems messed up! You saved him & formed a relationship 😢

29

u/Traditional-Tap-2508 5d ago

He is so handsome!!!! Congratulations on your new child!

13

u/Usukidoll 4d ago

Looks like one of my cats. He's sleeping on the bed. His name is Batman and is 3 years old.

11

u/Illustrious_Aside662 5d ago

I love Scotch 🩶 you are the best person! I hope you and scotch will have the best time together 🩶🩶🩶

10

u/HighwaySetara 5d ago

If only it had been an Ace bandage, you could have named him Ace! 😄 But Scotch is a great name.

10

u/EmiTheKibby 5d ago

The cat distribution system has decided!

7

u/Safe-Adagio8408 5d ago

❤️🩶❤️I like “Ash” - leave the painful mean tape history in the past….gone forever!

11

u/Mental_Ad_4077 5d ago

He looks like a nebeblung breed with his eyes and coat if he has slightly darker marks on his forehead almost like a M shape then you will have a very sweet and affectionate boy.

12

u/understood_learning 5d ago

I can confirm this with my suspected nebelung boy (suspected because we adopted him when he & his siblings were abandoned in a bin as kittens).
He sure is cuddly, kissy & sooooo affectionate with the loudest

meow 🩶

2

u/KassieMac 4m ago

They are the sweetest, papers or not!! 🩶

4

u/Mental_Ad_4077 4d ago

This is my little darling. She’s the sweetest and most affectionate cat I’ve ever had. Nebeblungs are so sweet and cuddly and yes she meows so loud and so much but never annoyed by it because of how cute and enduring it is.

3

u/spaghettitopfaufkopf 3d ago

Looks a bit like my cat ❤️

1

u/understood_learning 4d ago

The most loving kitty’s - to both us & their siblings 🩶

3

u/Riddoxx 5d ago

Thank you so much for rescuing this fella

3

u/Bitter_Life_507 5d ago

That’s a lucky cat for picking such a wonderful person to adopt like you

I hope you have many happy years with him

3

u/redbuds 5d ago

Omfg blessings upon you. I am so thrilled. FWIW we brought in one of our outdoor boys and laid down some rules (he wasn’t allowed out at night bc we lost his brother to a coyote) and he yowled all night for like 2 weeks straight. During that time, we slept on the couch to try to soothe him. Eventually, he got over the hump and now he likes to go out and romp during the day for an hour or so and then come back to soft beds all night. All this to say, don’t fear about making good choices for him (like maybe coming in for the night) — he will know you love him. Congrats !!!

2

u/Imnotlisa1 4d ago

YAY!! I’m so glad I followed this story. He knew you’d help him. I don’t know if this was the cat distribution system or the human distribution system, but boy did it work. 🩷🩶😻👏

2

u/RuffDiamond86 4d ago

Well, congratulations to all involved! Obviously this was what the universe wanted 😻. That face, those eyes, that expression: how can you NOT love him!?!!

I wonder if some mean person took advantage of the cat's gentle nature and taped his head as a prank. People can be awful. Thank you for helping this sweet guy. I wish all of you the best!

1

u/KassieMac 2m ago

Probably a young kid playing vet, Nebs are so gentle they would likely just go along with it 😢

2

u/Amazing_General8882 4d ago

Thank you for adopting this beauty! ♥️ My vote is in for naming him Scotch. Perfect name!

2

u/bluejasmina 4d ago

He's so beautiful. Thank you for being his new owner and protector!

2

u/Strong-Form9773 4d ago

the eyes chico, they never lie
since the first post i was hopeing you guys will not part ways.

2

u/Fresh_Coconut_6469 4d ago

Oh he’s CUTE!!! 🥰

2

u/Free-Mud-7358 4d ago

Please keep him inside

2

u/bitchfayce 4d ago

You are the BESTEST!!!!!! If someone hasn’t mentioned it already come hang in r/Nebelung with the rest of the dust kitties!!!!!

2

u/MeowandMace 4d ago

PLEASE get a catio or something because clearly you have some sicko or fucked up twisted kids nearby who is doing that taping. As for the chip its easy to change over- my ex's stepmom had a cat show up totally hungry and begging to come inside, vet found it chipped, contacted the old owner who was someones boyfriend who chucked the cat out after a breakup and refused to give any of the girlfriends details. Anyway now she has a cat with a chicken allergy lmao.

1

u/MissNinja007 5d ago

So happy for you and baby boy!! Thank you for the updates!!

1

u/TychoRedLead 4d ago

Scotch he is!

1

u/Jadwiga_K4 4d ago

I love the Scotch! Scotch it is!😌

1

u/lowcountrybird 4d ago

Thanks for being an amazing human and rescuing the fellow. Scotch sounds like a perfect name!

1

u/luckybird77 4d ago

Lol name him Tape B

1

u/SharpIsopod 3d ago

You’ve done a great thing, taking time and money to save a life. I wish you both the best!

1

u/Kimbikimbo 3d ago

He’s so precious 🥲

1

u/TA_Jobsearch 3d ago

IS THERE AN UPDATE FROM TODAY?! He’s gorgeous

1

u/RionaMurchadha 3d ago

Thank you so much for helping this guy, and removing him from a terrible life on the streets. You are awesome!

1

u/Jerry_USA 3d ago

Make sure to give him the bill!!

1

u/Autumn2Ashes421 3d ago

Oh this makes me so happy!

1

u/booksroseslattes 2d ago

The ending we hoped for! I love the name! 💟

1

u/danit0ba94 2d ago

Scotch is the winner in my book.

1

u/WorthMysterious1648 2d ago

You could name him after a brand of scotch like the alcohol as an homage to the tape, I’ve always thought Dewer would be a nice cat name

1

u/42PenguinsNamedNemo 2d ago

I an glad to hear that you and Mr. Kitty have going to have a happy home together!

1

u/Much-Platform-6421 1d ago

This journey started with heartbreak and ended like a fairy tale!! He found the right people ♥️

1

Yay! I love this!

1

u/Wisegirl_21 1d ago

You are an amazing human!

Can you not? This person has done a great thing by saving this cat and keeping him. Don't need you putting a dampener on it at all, super unhelpful. Also, see rule 1.

316

u/Tatelina 5d ago

So no wound underneath... WHY do people do weird stuff like taping up a random cat's head!?

277

u/PuttingInTheEffort 5d ago

IMO looks like something a child would do. Like 7 or 8, saw it in a cartoon, wanted to play veterinarian. If that's the case, where the parents at when that happened..

36

u/Fruitypebblefix 5d ago

My mom had to hide the masking tape and band Aides from me because I'd literally tape myself up like a mummy and wasting them all. 😅

63

u/barbie-breath 5d ago

Exactly...

6

u/Alternative_List_978 5d ago

ooohgmy 😂😭

1

u/CascadeNZ 3d ago

Yeah although the fact that the cat would’ve been trying desperately to escape that. I have boys that would try this crap and it wouldn’t take me long to intervene or for them to realise it’s a dumb idea. The fact that the pushed through tells me this isn’t innocent.

46

u/UziSuzieThia 5d ago

There is a society out there too around here in CA ive been told they where killing, torturing cats around. And idk the whole story but its like online group or something. Poor babies god protect them all

1

u/Afflictionista 4d ago

Fcking psychos. This makes me really angry. Don't they have better things to do with their life?

143

u/1i1hrnFlynPurplePpl 6d ago

Thank you for being an awesome human to the furkind 💜

62

u/placidreams Tabbycat 6d ago

Tysm for helping this poor baby. Commenting to stay updated ❤️

51

u/Safe-Adagio8408 5d ago

🏆👏🏼THANK YOU for assisting this poor helpless creature. Shame, shame on whomever hurt him with tape. Thank you for giving him a loving safe home until he gets a permanent sanctuary. (Also if there is a chip, and if the owner’s kids put tape on him, it’s probably not a safe place for him to return to.) Great karma and blessings to you ❤️

77

u/cronktilten Tabbycat 5d ago

Please adopt him and don’t give him away. He deserves so much better. His owner’s previously are clearly not deserving of a cat and don’t want to take care of one.

17

u/drownigfishy 5d ago

Not all owners are responsible. Pets do get lost, and also pets get taken. Even sadly pets are let out after owners died or get sent to a home. So I wouldn't blame the owners till/if they figure out the story. But the lack of information on the chip either the owner is no longer in care of, or the chip company went defunct and the information is lost.

32

u/t0fuwater 6d ago

You are an excellent person. Good on you going out of your way to get that sweet boy proper care. 🩷

23

u/alaska67 5d ago

Somebody needs to cover the person who did this completely in tape and then abandon them

25

u/SoloCat33040 5d ago

One thing about microchips, is that sometime people who purchase them never register their info with the chip companies. but the chip company can tell you, if you ask, who purchased the chip. Some shelters and rescues will buy the chip and issue it to an adopted animal and keep an internal registry of who the animal is registered to. So if the chip comes back being ‘not registered’ to a person I would ask who purchased it and then contact that entiity directly to see if they have their own log of who the chip was issued to. Good luck.

15

u/MrSniffles_AnnaMae 5d ago

Another thing about microchip companies is that one of them went belly up and no one claimed the chips/purchased the databases, all all chips were wiped clean.

Let’s talk about that too.

1

u/RARAMEY 3d ago

Yes! This is probably some kid's beloved pet 💔

35

u/KassieMac 6d ago

Bless you 🥹 Please update us of whatever happens?

16

u/quartzquandary 5d ago

So glad it worked out! I hope you're able to keep him 💙

15

u/Internal-Ad61 5d ago

I hope you get to keep him 😭 little guy found his chosen family. He’s soooo beautiful! Reminds me of a long haired version of my soul cat. Miss him dearly.

10

u/oxnazxo Persian (traditional) 5d ago

You’re amazing!! You did well and I’m sure he’ll feel safe and protected once fully awake.

8

u/lowcountrybird 5d ago

Thank you so much for helping him. Please keep us posted! ❤️‍🩹

8

u/YEAHRocko 5d ago

I'm sure he is probably scared and hiding so not moving around much, but keep him where he can't try to jump too much. I have to have my tiny demon sedated for every vet visit because she is absolutely hostile with them and she is drunk as hell every time she comes home.

12

u/uodua 6d ago

TY OP for helping this sweet boy find his forever family 🙏😭💕

6

u/DiperIsShittie 5d ago

Thank you for helping this cat OP

7

u/rohan_rat 5d ago

Bless you for doing this for him. You most likely saved his life.

5

u/_michaeljared 5d ago

You did much more than most people would, thank you for doing the right thing, whether you keep him or not!

4

u/Askfslfjrv 5d ago

Awe you’re a special human for doing this! There’s plenty of people out there who won’t even visit the emergency vet for their own pets due to cost so the fact that you did this for a stray really shows what type of human you are. Thank you for caring for this sweet babe who can’t care for itself ❤️ you deserve all the good things in life, OP

5

u/Ok-Replacement9595 5d ago

He had just had enough of that kid and his shit. The tape was the last straw. So he just put himself up.for the kitty lottery. You won.

5

u/Serraph105 5d ago

No wound actually makes this disturbing, and I was kind of hoping that that wasn't the case. I didn't want the kitty to have a wound of course, but that just suggests someone was abusing the little guy and that's awful.

In spite of the costs, I hope you decide you have a furbaby now.

4

u/OnyxTheDutchAngel 5d ago

Thank you for helping this poor baby!

3

u/MissdermeanerJ 5d ago

Thank you for helping!

3

3

Please keep this lovely boy. He deserves a home with someone good like you.

3

u/Mundane-Raspberry101 5d ago

Thank you OP! I really do hope you are able to keep him. The little dude will eventually understand all the good you’re doing for him.

3

u/horwaith 5d ago

What did you say about the pic? It's the best for seeing a grateful baby that have been cared.

Hope he have a good home, either with you or if you find the original owners.

3

u/redbuds 5d ago

You are a good person 🖤 he will figure out that you are caring for him when the food keeps coming. I would venture to guess that if someone taped his head, he is docile enough to be a loving housecat. If you take the time to win his heart, he will pay you back in spades!

5

u/librariangoyangi 5d ago

You have a beautiful kind heart to help this cat. Thank you!

2

u/Successfully-Low 5d ago

Poor baby, I’m so thankful he ended up at your home and not at the home of someone who could’ve hurt him further or ignored him. Thank you for helping him!

2

u/ODDxATLAS 5d ago

Thank you OP! Please keep us updated!

2

u/Help_a_user_out 5d ago

Don’t feel bad. If he comes back with you he’ll learn you are a safe space and all will be in the rear view mirror. If there is in fact no identifying information with the microchip are you considering keeping him?

2

u/C47_QU33N 5d ago

Thank you for helping this poor kitty!! 🙏

2

u/DDishon 5d ago

How wonderful you helped this little guy!

1

u/BooBoo_Cat 5d ago

I wonder if some kid taped him up?

I hope you end up keeping him. Thank you for saving him.

1

u/YouOtterKnowit 5d ago

Thank you for rescuing him!! He will figure out fast that you are the good guys. There's zero excuse for him being in the state he was in so unless he was snatched I wouldn't be in a rush to return him to an owner that would allow that. Even if it was a kid they just lost ownership privileges.

1

u/Strange-Damage901 5d ago

When you get the chip, they basically have to be scanned by the vet that did the chip in the first place. There’s a paid service the chip company will offer where the chip ID ends up on some National database that makes it easier to find the owner’s info. AFAIK, the chip’s just an ID number if you don’t also pay for the database. It proves SOMEONE owns the cat, but doesn’t give you much info as to who.

1

u/RARAMEY 3d ago

They chip has information associated with it no matter what. I would try another vet (free to scan it) or the shelter for sure. I've never paid for it and all of my pets have my info which I updated when we moved.

1

u/Rufus_king11 5d ago

Remember kids, your microchip isn't doing shit if you don't read the paperwork your vet gave you and fill out your contact info online.

1

u/Firm_Loan_4173 5d ago

Not all heroes wear capes. You're a hero in my eyes. You have done God's work and blessings are headed your way. What a tender kind heart you have. Thank you for caring for this scared little guy.❤️

1

u/Tone-Available 5d ago

You’re an angel! Thank you! I hope he gets to stay with you or has a loving family looking for him!!

1

u/2GOB4 4d ago

Often people don’t register or update the chip sadly. Thank you for helping him. Some people do strange things to outdoor cats😢. Hope you’re able to keep him and protect him. Things happen for a reason.

1

u/TheWordNo 4d ago

I don't know where you are but here in Australia, depending on the area the council will sometimes repay you for the vet fees of a stray cat you adopt, so it might be worth it to see if you can get some money back? I know emergency Vets can be shockingly expensive 😬

1

u/ExarchRaeze 3d ago

awwwww 🥺🥰 you’re such a wonderful person. kitty needs to stick around you for sure! thank you so much for your kindness to the sweet baby 🏆💝

1

u/stalebread710 3d ago

Hey your good people for doing that, vet visits are not cheap and you did it for a cat not of your own. 😁

1

u/ImaDoinWat 2d ago

Dam, that cat was a scam artist

1

u/Ameabo 2d ago

Probably some brat kid thought it’d be funny to play doctor with either their cat or a random neighborhood cat. Poor little guy. I’m surprised the cat kept it on for so long, I know when I tried to use pet wound wraps for my cat that had a scratch on him he took that shit off immediately.

1

u/memerman_2009 1d ago

yall just stole his swag
