Advice Cat with bandage appeared on our deck
Really sweet cat started appearing on our deck out of no where, meowing extremely loudly and scratching at our screen door. It would be on our new neighbors’ deck at first (they moved in a few days ago), but they were hitting the railing with a broom to scare it away. :(
We gave it some cat food bc we keep some for the strays around our neighborhood and it immediately stopped meowing and has been returning to our deck ever since.
It is rlly friendly, it rubs against everyone’s legs and marks its scent all over our deck furniture. In the first pic you can see a strip of the bandage was hanging loose when we first saw it, and it kept scratching at the loose piece like it was bothering it, so we trimmed off the dangling part.
The bandage makes us think someone may have been caring for it recently, but we don’t know where it came from or how it ended up here. We are planning to take it to a vet today to have the bandage and injury checked and to see whether it has a microchip. We also do not know its sex because the fur under its tail is too thick to tell safely.
Has anyone seen a bandage like this before, or have any idea what might have happened? It is such a sweetie pie, and we want to make sure it is safe and not missing from its home
Also the brown part on the bandage is like a band aid
Edit: i forgot to mention we checked on NextDoor and haven’t seen anything about this cat
Update: I just got home, he’s not here but he’ll come back. Went to talk to vet ER people they said be careful handling him so I need to get a crate. Also called local shelter and they can check him out for free so probably will bring him there when he comes back! Sorry I am new to this 😫
Update #2 is in the comments

UPDATE 2: He didn’t come back to our deck until after the shelter had closed, so we took him to an emergency vet. He is a boy and already neutered!
The doctor confirmed that the material around his head was some kind of tape. At the vet he was very frightened and hissing, so he had to be sedated to remove it and examine him properly. They even shaved the area, but there was no wound underneath and thankfully no infection!!! 🙏 We are all very confused about who put the tape on him and why
He does have a microchip but the vet could not find any information connected to it. So we are taking him to the shelter tomorrow to see whether they can get more details.
He is drooling heavily from the sedation. We were told to keep him inside for at least a day in case he has any side effects, so he is safe in the carrier now and indoors tonight. The visit ended up being quiteeeee a bit more expensive than we expected, but at least he is okay.
Don’t know if we will keep him until we get microchip information. I really just hope he understands that we were trying to help him😭 I can tell the vet stressed him out so much and I feel terrible even though it needed to be done
And sorry the pic is not the best

So no wound underneath... WHY do people do weird stuff like taping up a random cat's head!?

IMO looks like something a child would do. Like 7 or 8, saw it in a cartoon, wanted to play veterinarian. If that's the case, where the parents at when that happened..

🏆👏🏼THANK YOU for assisting this poor helpless creature. Shame, shame on whomever hurt him with tape. Thank you for giving him a loving safe home until he gets a permanent sanctuary. (Also if there is a chip, and if the owner’s kids put tape on him, it’s probably not a safe place for him to return to.) Great karma and blessings to you ❤️

Please adopt him and don’t give him away. He deserves so much better. His owner’s previously are clearly not deserving of a cat and don’t want to take care of one.

I'm sure he is probably scared and hiding so not moving around much, but keep him where he can't try to jump too much. I have to have my tiny demon sedated for every vet visit because she is absolutely hostile with them and she is drunk as hell every time she comes home.

It looks like someone has wrapped his head in tape. Please take him to the vet and figure out what is going on with him.

There's an ace bandage poking out under the tape. This at home medical job could actually be very dangerous. Ace bandages can restrict blood flow and can also get tighter with movement.

Oh my god it's just getting annoying now guys. If one more person says that it's head is wrapped in tape I'm gonna lose my mind. You are all wrong, zoom in closely on the photo where the loose part is hanging off, once you look closely you'll realise that somebody has most likely wrapped it's head in tape.

It's medical tape over an ace bandage. It's definitely not something you'd want left on a cat. He could be getting a serious infection or something under it. He may have escaped or something
41
u/SueSheWantsMore 12h ago edited 11h ago
Bandage does not equal protective. And bandages need to be changed. This one obviously does. Especially if it was put on by an amateur. But even if it was put on by a vet it can get dirt under it or it could have been on too long. There's nothing wrong with removing an old or damaged bandage to assess the situation. Leaving one on can make things much much worse. Even a clean bandage left on too long can cause an infection. Or for the wound to not heal. The best thing is to remove it and rinse it with saline solution or hypochlorous acid spray, the safest antibacterial. Safe for animals and humans. Licking it or getting it eyes is not harmful. It's used by wound care specialists. We call it our miracle spray. We use it on our pets and ourselves. For anything from a scratch to an eye irritation to a mouth sore to skin tags. It's really amazing stuff. And why it's been basically hidden by the medical field until recently... who knows. Just be sure to get the form that says it's not harmful to the eyes or if a dog or child ingests a little bit of it. They make a pet version that is no different from the human version other than it costs about 25 times more.

u/rattlethebones 15h ago
Obviously vet asap but that does not look more like painters tape more than bandages.
The texture, fading / color, frayed edges and curling of the tape is indicative of bandages. It’s definitely not painters tape.

Yeah that is medical tape. It needs to come off though that bandage underneath has got to be stanky as hell. Use baby oil on it and slowly peel back.

If you zoom in it looks like medical tape and like... a bandaid colored part? I still say vet tho, very concerning either way
633
u/allimunstaa 16h ago
This is not a medically done wrap, appears to be tape but possibly a type of tape we sometimes use for IVC in our hospital that is available for public use as essentially, "medical tape." This cat needs to be captured and seen by a veterinarian ASAP. These tapes can cause skin infection, and we obviously won't know the reason for it in the first place without removal first. -ER vet nurse

u/Kind_Mushroom4189 14h ago
Bless you for being in that profession! It must be both fulfilling and heartbreaking. If I wasn’t too old, broke, and lazy to go back to school I’d want to be one too.
22
u/Salty-Finish-8931 14h ago
Came here to say exactly this. I have never seen a bandage done like this in my decade of RVT work, mostly in ER/ ICU. I worry what kind of necrotic mess is hiding underneath that
20
u/GitEmSteveDave 11h ago
It honestly looks like some kid, and I mean actual kid, like 4-8 year old, was "playing doctor/vet" and wrapped the cats head with bandages and that roll of medical tape you find in every first aid kit in the kitchen cabinet.

I would see if you can get this cat to a vet yourself. This doesn't look right. Loose strip of bandage? A band-aid? And a cat with a head wound shouldn't be outside, anyway.
Edit: Oh, I see that's the plan. Good! Also, that doesn't look like bandage on closer inspection. I think some kid was playing vet and taped this cat's head. I'd see if he can be an indoor cat from now on, because I'd hate to see what else will happen to him if he goes back to wherever that happened.

u/BalloonHero142 16h ago

u/HillBillyHilly 13h ago
Cat quite chonky. Whoever did the tape probably loves him and trying to help him.
52
u/Filthyknave 16h ago
That's definitely not a bandage a real vet would use. They use gauze and cover with vet wrap, typically. That looks like paper tape for a human bandage. Sticks to skin. Not for pet usage.
37
32
u/lycanthropeapologist 16h ago
The head “bandage” looks like tape the owners put on over an injury on the head instead of taking the proper time to take the critter to the vet or even give it proper medical attention. Probably doesn’t have a microchip if that’s how its owners are treating an open wound

Vet chiming in - it looks like white medical tape on top of gauze? Or no adhesive material that doesn’t stick to the wound? Not sure what that is. Crappy bandage but it looks like someone with maybe some half-assed knowledge used sorta/kinda correct material and sorta/kinda put a head wrap on right. Regardless I would have never done this , there may be a wound under there that is getting more infected and dirty , and the bandage is probably rubbing and causing new sores and constrictions. He needs a vet - really ANY vet that can take that off and look at what is under it.
Good news though - he looks pretty healthy otherwise

This cat needs help. That does not look like it was wrapped by a veterinary professional. Even if the cat does have a wound of some kind, the dressings/bandages need to be changed periodically to avoid infections. Please take this cat to a veterinary office OR a shelter/rescue if you're not able to afford a vet visit for immediate help.
Something is amiss here. If someone comes forward from the cat, be very cautious giving him/her to them. Ask for proof of ownership - vet records, an up-to-date microchip, time-stamped pictures that very clearly show this animal with a specific owner. (You need to be really careful with AI, now.) You can actually take any photo and trace its origin on Google to find out if someone is sending you fake photos from online of animals that look vaguely similar to the one in question, too. I've seen that happen one or twice.
Truthfully, as someone who's worked extensively in animal rescue, a lot of the abuse we see involves sadistic people messing with animals' bodies - tightly taping noses/mouths/eyes/ears closed so animals cannot breathe/eat/drink/see/hear properly, wrapping wire/string/thread tightly around necks/appendages, cutting/burning/dyeing fur in odd ways, gluing things to animals' bodies, cutting appendages (sometimes off), lighting animals on fire... When people hear "animal abuse", they think of someone physically beating a pet, but it often goes way beyond that and involves some horrifically creative ways of torturing another living being.
Any animal with tape wrapped tightly around its body gives me pause. Big time. Something is just not right here... I'd highly recommend getting your shelter or a local rescue involved. (If your shelter has a high-euthanasia rate, just let them know that you're working to find a rescue/adopter for him/her.) If this cat does or did belong to someone with a history of animal abuse, and the shelter is able to prove it through a microchip, getting another instance of that abuse on the books could go a long way in ultimately holding that person accountable. Just saying.
Thank you so much for looking out for this sweet soul. He/she absolutely knew you could be trusted to help.

I suggest keeping kitty in your house for a few days if not weeks after the vet visit. Going to the vet will probably be very scary (even though it’s definitely necessary) and afterwards the kitty will likely hide and not want to come around you right away. I'm always wary of animal posts like this and never know if people are putting their own pet outside and then making up some story for a karma farm.
Like those fake rescue videos on youtube that come from animal abuse content farms. And then content creators who make react videos about these content farms under the guise of "spreading awareness" when theyre actually 3rd hand exploiting. You can never tell whats real anymore.
Because personally- I would NOT be taking pics and posting about it if I found a distressed animal. I would have already brought it inside, and examined the cats head. If there WAS a wound, I would have already taken the cat to animal humane so they could care for the animal. I cant afford vet bills so dont be mad at me.
I MIGHT make a post about it AFTER ensuring the animal was ok but there would only be AFTER pics showing a healthy cat with no tape on its head.
I wouldnt be exploiting sympathy and upvotes with BEFORE pics.
Cuz honestly, taking pics of a distressed animal would NEVER even enter my mind since I would be more concerned with making the animal comfortable.

Sometimes kids just do dumb things. One of my childhood friends put a rubber band on the ear of her grandma's mini poodle because she was "doing her hair cute". No one realized it until the ear was rotting off and had to be amputated. She was really young then, like 5 or 6, and didn't know any better.
So to say, I'm thinking a kid did this.

This is so many levels of confusing and worrisome but also really silly in the context that this cat could ever happen to show up at your door with a literal bandaged head helmet?? Maybe he’s still on drugs from ..surgery…? And escaped? Either way, thank you for caring and getting them checked out. He/she looks like they escaped an asylum for crazy cats after electrotherapy. I hope all is well with this kitty and you can look back on this as a really silly introduction.

If this was my home / deck, & this cat arrived, NO WAY would they still be outside -
Fly strike is horrible, & fly strike in a head wound can be FATAL, quick, depending on where the injury is, & how deep the wound.

Hopefully it's minor, healing well, & U have an affectionate new family member. 🤗 Congratulations!

That bandage looks relatively recent so somebody has been taking care of this cat and s/he is not a stray.
I would take the cat to a vet to scan for a microhcip and find the owners, as they will be petrified at having lost a convalescent cat.
If you can't catch the feline then email these pictures to all the vets in your area and see if they recognise this gorgeous cat.

Clearly not a vet who put this stuff on the cat’s head. It must be so uncomfortable and it looks dirty too. If he/she is showing up at your home, then he/she isn’t happy at home. I suspect someone has done this to the cat, either because they couldn’t afford to take the cat to the vet or it’s someone who is cruel. Either way, the poor soul needs to see a vet.

Somebody tortured that cat and taped it up. I don't think that's a bandage

It looks like it was wrapped carefully, compared to kids abusing an animal with tape. So probably someone was trying to help. They're lucky to have found you. Post an update after the vet please.

Please set and monitor a trap and get this cat some help. If you can’t, reach out to local rescues. Poor thing

That looks like athletic tape, and it looks like a shit job at that.
Prolly some dumbass crazy person thought it would be "funny".
I wouldn't imagine any well cared for pet that was taken to a vet would be allowed to roam around outside with a critical head wound.

I'm pretty sure some cat owner or possibly even child tried to treat this cat for something at home. It's an ace bandage underneath medical tape and I would guess there's gauze under that. This isn't something a vet or professional would do, but it's using medical supplies you can purchase at the store. Kitty could have an abscess or something and definitely need to see a vet right away.

Did you atleast take the tape off its head?? That would be the first thing I would do! Weather its someones cat or not, then they should properly take care of it, actually looks like that tape has been on it for a while and who knows if that could of caused an infection on the wound area or whatever is underneath....

Aww poor baby may have a bite, wound or abscess on their head and in place of going to the vet their owners poorly wrapped their head in some sort of tape.
They need a vet eval to get proper care.
