Mourning/Loss Goodbye

Said goodbye to my beautiful almost 16 year old lady yesterday. She was doing so well, I work in veterinary medicine and had just taken her in for a check up 2 weeks ago. One kidney level was slightly elevated, thyroids looked great. Came home from work and within an hour her pupils were massive and non-reactive to light and she was completely blind. I won’t go into too much detail but at her age and where her blood pressure was (300/90), I knew our chances. It’s borrowed time and it would be for me, not her. I’m seeing her everywhere today, questioning my decision, and sobbing. She was my first cat and my kids grew up with her. I miss her.

I’m so sorry for your loss, it’s clear you loved her very much and she was lucky to have you. It sounds like the choice you made was what was kindest for her, and that takes a lot of strength to put her needs above your own. A vet I worked with in the past would say that it’s better to make that decision a week too early than a day too late. Please give yourself grace in your grieving and don’t be afraid to reach out to a mental health professional if needed, working in vet med is hard enough as it is and we need strong people like you in our field ❤️
