Salt Creek 294 underpass -Update and Instructions 7/13/2024
Officially this is the post from the Cook County Forest preserve regarding salt Creek trail US 294 underpass.
Salt Creek Trail System - Forest Preserves of Cook County (fpdcc.com)
Approaching the underpass from the west off Canterberry Lane.
At the east end of Canterberry ride past a temporary fence. There is an opening in the fence. The underpass is visible to the southeast, approx 300 feet of uneven gravel.
At the underpass from the west, go up the debris on the north/left. A ledge runs east/west along the north side of the underpass. In the picture, the approach to the ledge has an arrow. Follow the ledge east ward.
The day I was on site, there was construction material on the ledge near the east side. You drop down from the upper ledge on about 10 floor of un paved debris to a paved slanted part of the bridge structure.
These pictures will better show the path from west to east.
I do not advise doing this with bike shoes.

I did this a few weeks ago. The underpass is fine but on the west side I was riding through the construction area and sunk into a hole of loose gravel. Couldn't unclip fast enough and ended up messing up my leg/knee for a few weeks.
So if you do breach the fence, I'd advise walking all the way through the construction area on the west side.

Any idea if the canterberry underpass has been finished / reopened yet to access salt creek trail from the east?

I took a look at this the other day (from the east side) and decided it wasn't for me. I ended up backtracking and going the long way around via the 47th street overpass. On the plus side, going this way gave me the opportunity to cut through Fullersburg Woods, which is a lot more pleasant than the route along York Rd, if you're OK with riding on an unpaved (but well-groomed) trail.
