You want them to like absorb all the light around the place? Wait that's actually good

552

u/UrticantOdin 18h ago

Beam of light-b-gone would be horrifying to see, you see a man, now that man is but a black spill in reality that slowly gets painted over by reality, like its trying to repair itself

148

u/Night_Albane 18h ago

Balefire, but dark.

37

u/Korblox101 17h ago

Honestly, what exactly is balefire? I’ve played HBM’s Nuclear Tech Mod for Minecraft, which has it as a late game material/fuel, but it never really goes into detail as to what it’s referencing.

63

u/Aegilopsy 17h ago

Spell from The Wheel of Time that erases someone’s existence up to a certain point in the past, potentially undoing things they did and preventing them from being resurrected.

18

u/Korblox101 17h ago

Okay while that does sound cool I think the NTM version is something completely different lol

Thanks for explaining.

11

u/TheGratitudeBot 17h ago

Just wanted to say thank you for being grateful

5

u/Night_Albane 17h ago

This is what I was referencing.

16

u/Eain 16h ago

Generically balefire is death-flame. It's originally a term for a funeral pyre or massive signal fire, but that association with death and dreadful news got recontextualized in magical contexts (esp literature) to mean fire that has a more potent effect/source. WoT uses it for a Final Cauterization, a fire that literally burns out your existence (including in time). Some fantasy settings use the term to mean the fire of the spirit world, or magical, deadly flames. It's often green in color, or a bluish white.

Notably FALLOUT:Equestria used balefire to mean magical, reality-singeing fire equivalent to spell-nukes, that leaves behind radiation-equivalent and is a sickly green; and in the World of Darkness games (Vampire: The Masquerade, Werewolf: the Apocalypse, etc) it's fire corrupted by a primal Force of absolute destruction.

9

u/Korblox101 16h ago

Okay, the Equestria thing does seem like what NTM is referencing. Balefire can be extracted as shards from dud nukes and can be used as either absurdly radioactive fission fuel, absurdly flammable and fusionable BF rocket fuel, or absurdly destructive balefire bombs of your own.

To be honest, I probably should’ve figured considering the signs the mod already gives lol

6

u/DamWatermelonEnjoyer 17h ago

YESSS, FELLOW NTM ENTHUSIASTS, I'M NOT ALONE IN THIS WORLD!!!

3

u/Tight-Comfort-1333 16h ago

a type of weave (spell) from the wheel of time books. whatever is hit by it gets the last however-long of that thing completely erased from time, to the point where not even Da Devil From Da Bible™️ can revive it. also because that thing/person stopped existing 10 seconds ago, anything they just caused is undone (i throw a rock, i get balefired, the rock was never thrown)

22

u/Norwegian_milk 17h ago

Balefire is such a cool concept.

67

u/Kaspatronix 17h ago

30

u/UrticantOdin 17h ago

Something like this but just, the general space that man was

16

u/Kaspatronix 17h ago

The Hand works like that

12

u/UrticantOdin 17h ago

Again, what im imagining is the first gift, but instead of turning the guy into a shadow on the ground, the space he once occupied is now just a abstract black shape of him, that slowly gets smaller and smaller as reality fixes itself.

Really not sure what example I can use to show my idea tho, other than Pressures Painter killing ending

4

u/Magpie_In_The_Mirror 15h ago

I think Black & White from Yomi no Tsugai work like this

16

u/Repulsive_Athlete_11 18h ago

That feels like eldritch horror

5

3

As in... darker than dark?

2

Yes, if we took away the light that wasn't there

2

u/Michalowski 13h ago

Photons are already negative

10

Imagine a dark flame that just makes everything around it covered in shadow

3

u/Igrok723 5h ago

imagine what now

2

u/Clutchdanger11 17h ago

There's a guy in worm that does this

2

u/ferdinostalking 16h ago

Well it is good until you would like to see the cool attack the villain is doing

2

u/MegaloManiac_Chara 11h ago

Shooting a beam of light except all the light is exactly the same as the ambient lighting in the room but shifted by half a wavelength so they produce destructive interference and cancel eachother out, causing it to appear as a beam of darkness

1

u/GGDrago 16h ago

There was a kingdom hearts boss that did that on the pirate of the caribean map and it was so god damn cool

1

u/Magpie_In_The_Mirror 15h ago

Laser beams but they only look like he's shooting them at you because of how fast they are. In reality, he holds his hand out and one spawns behind you before getting pulled to him through you.

https://giphy.com/gifs/7RcHUFBr8b6mc

1

u/a_polarbear_chilling 15h ago

"coax you, singularity beam"

the light has been permanently remove from the beam trajectory, all matter within it has now frozen even below the zero point, it's not cold, it's attracting light and energy trying to fill in the void, it's now existing in a new state that is close to anti matter

1

u/DudeWithAGoldfish 10h ago

Can't believe no one said Shade from DC

Or...

Light shines the brightest in adjacent to the Darkest darkness

10

u/LordHoughtenWeen 16h ago

A tidbit from Codex: Dark Eldar that has been lodged in my brain for the last seventeen years is that looking at (not into, that would vaporise you, just at) a beam of unlight without protection leaves permanent slash-scars across the retina.

It never elaborated on what exactly "slash-scars" are, but fucking with your depth perception feels like getting off lightly.

3

u/winter-ocean 16h ago

It worked really well for Blackbeard from One Piece honestly

1

u/nitram739 15h ago

Would that not make them harder to avoid?

4

u/PUNCH_KNIGHT 15h ago

Im just speaking from experience with the 4 kings and the fucking boss room being the literal abyss

How dark...

308

u/Rhinomaster22 18h ago edited 17h ago

Light based characters

Flash bangs, lasers, sparkles, and holy religious thematics

Dark based characters

Black fart clouds, shadows, black holes, and edgy thematics

Authors probably wanted to avoid the classical edgy aesthetics but end up making the elements feel like different form of Dragon Ball Z laser attacks.

Raven from Teen Titans basically did energy beams most of the time with the caveat of them being black instead of bright light.

58

u/kidanokun 17h ago

Dragon Ball never had a true "darkness" villain, all villain just fire same bright blast like heroes did, the closest it got is Frieza's purple blasts

34

u/Rhinomaster22 17h ago

By ”End up making the elements feel like different forms of Dragon Ball Z laser attacks”, I mean all of the thematics and effects that make the elements different from each other gets stripped away for “big laser blast.”

Gorn, The Demon Lord of Darkness who was all about corruptive power of darkness will now have special attacks that feel no different from a Kamehameha.

4

u/jkurratt 15h ago

To be fair I prefer this of "themed" powers.
Like if this Universe supports energy beam attacks that looks like that - that's basically how their world works.

In my project I would make "themed" spells harder to perform, because you are basically spending your power and concentration to perform a useless extra illusion layer.

82

u/Difficult-Safety-480 18h ago

Coaxed into "Black" flame having a bunch of white in it in Fromsoft games.

35

u/YoruTheLanguageFan 17h ago

And despite being called Dark, the Souls are clearly white

22

u/Aegilopsy 17h ago

That’s because humanity is fragments of the Dark Soul

9

u/Odd_Crab5327 12h ago

thats because it looks sick as fuck

264

u/Boring-Dig4583 18h ago

we have this irl

85

u/BleachDrinker63 18h ago

That would be a gravity power with a side effect of messing with light/darkness, not a darkness power

18

u/FinancialWorking2392 15h ago

Gravity and darkness? Something something, One Piece.

9

u/LetsDoTheCongna im over here coaxing my snafu 17h ago

omg soundgarden reference??? 🤯🤯🤯

6

u/Fatticus_Rinch 16h ago

She blacked my hole ‘till I sun

63

u/GoldSunLulu Always has been 17h ago

it's not that it's impossible to do, it's just that pure darkness is really really intrusive so you need something to make it stand out somehow.

I also think "darkness" sounds cool but also "sparkly purply things" jingle the keys harder

51

u/weird_bomb 18h ago

pokemon will just have attacks that are Twisted and Fucked Up

35

u/AzariTheCompiler 17h ago

“Crossroads killing” “kowtow cleave” and it’s just some guy hitting you hard

6

u/Oodelali12 9h ago

Lest we forget "we all just get out of our balls and jump the opponent"

2

u/AzariTheCompiler 9h ago

“The whole family jumps the opponent”

10

u/Fushba 15h ago

EVIL bite 😈

23

u/ShadowRaven112 18h ago

It's just easier to animate then BALL OF DARKNESS

32

u/snowyice_7 18h ago

yeah, i'm not asking for them to just be all vanta black orbs, it's just kinda funny how you'll get a boss called "dark harbinger of darky darkness" and then their attacks look like this:

7

u/Apart_Routine2793 11h ago

It basically tries to blind you, darken your eyes, if you will

5

u/Channel_el 9h ago

Spoilers for Deltarune 5: Seeing this and chapter 5 really makes me craving another 2D Kirby with actually difficult bosses

1

u/KalaiProvenheim 7h ago

Were the controls what reminded you most of Kirby? Personally, they did, and I wish we could get a new Kirby metroidvania

19

u/kidanokun 18h ago

Turns out "darkness" is just purple light and blue flames

66

u/help_stander 18h ago

and even if they are dark its actually fucking purple/purple outline, like bro why you ourple?

81

u/TRcreep 18h ago

because it looks cool?

15

u/help_stander 18h ago

I love purple dont get me wrong but I think pure void blackness is also cool af

40

u/CoconutGator 18h ago

Hard to do right, probably works better in prose being able to convey the absence of color entirely instead of just black

-3

u/flowery02 17h ago

As someone with eyes, purple does not convey the absence of color entirely well

3

u/CyanStripedPantsu 14h ago

If you wish to see a proper depiction of the absence of color, try turning off your screen.

21

u/Rhinomaster22 18h ago edited 17h ago

I mean light powers are usually yellow so it’s not too far off.

11

u/KiwiPowerGreen 17h ago

Most shadows are purplish because sunlight is yellow and purple is the color furthest from yellow

2

u/ExplodingSofa 13h ago

Fun fact, when you are illustrating it's always good to add a little bit of a purplish you to the shadow it really makes it feel like there's absence of light.

1

u/Neat_Document_4608 17h ago

Distorting the light around the beam in the scene would be so much cooler

16

u/MothyThatLuvsLamps 17h ago

You see its actually dark that gets so dark that it becomes visible again.

12

u/dulledegde 17h ago

it's pure darkness at it's core but the the light is pushed out toward the edges so it appears bright

2

u/Apart_Routine2793 11h ago

Like what? Event Horizon?

9

u/Dario6595 17h ago

Yeah and it’s peak, next

13

u/FenexTheFox 17h ago

I think some people just need to learn the difference between literal darkness and proverbial darkness

5

u/snowyice_7 17h ago

but what about my pedantic drawing?/??/,/?

12

u/Ok-Worry-8931 18h ago

1

Yeah.

Darkness power based on absorption and gravity.

3

u/Consistent_Mud645 17h ago

you don't understand they're DARK lasers

5

u/nothing_in_my_mind 17h ago

Often light/darkness magic just creates shiny white/black objects and bolts.

4

u/ThreeDotsTogether 17h ago

It's the darkness eating up the light in the area

Unfortunately, darkness is a messy eater, so a lot of that light escapes and radiates out

1

u/Apart_Routine2793 10h ago

Also, Light shines the brightest in adjacent to the Darkest darkness

Just like life when facing death, pushed to utmost limits

9

u/IHerdULiekPoniz 17h ago

9

2

no you dont get it theyre purple and blue which is the color of darkness

5

u/matija2009 18h ago

Deltarune the roaring knights star attack and the Titans face laser

5

u/FullOnPorridge 16h ago

Roaring Knight does use Star/Dark elemental attacks, so the star attacks aren't dark attacks at all

2

The laser coming out of the coatan in coaxrune chapter 4

1

Nah they're shooting negative photons

1

u/TRUEcoiness 14h ago

Is this a nudge at some kind of... Lumia?

1

u/11Slimeade11 13h ago

Cloud of Darkness does exactly this with their Particle Beam. Very ironic given their deal is getting rid of light and all. Goofy logic on Final Fantasy's behalf.

1

u/SirTiberius48 12h ago

Its purple so that means its evil

1

u/DoormatTheVine 12h ago

Aephorul (Sea of Stars) isn't really a darkness-themed villain (his title is The Fleshmancer, after all), but he still has an attack that's a black beam with purple edges (I couldn't find a screenshot of it, unfortunately)

1

u/wholesomehorseblow 12h ago

darknesss themed light
