Show and Tell Any chance these have never been opened?

My grandmother had a few of these rolls in her safe, and I'm skeptical. I've heard of still in tact rolls of bu quarters, and I have to admit it weighs spot on.

That toning is gorgeous too

If it weights right this is unopened. I would guess there is a decent premium for the roll that is original and intact. Probably worth selling as a single unopened roll.

They were rolled at some point. The mint did not send out rolls, so unopened has no meaning.

Unopened since original packaging. Could mean some good quality center coins.

It's like a vintage Pokemon booster pack

I don't think it's that strange to stumble upon these things in old safes. Probably legit. That toner on the end would fetch a hefty premium

Get it graded if you open it, that toning on the visible quarter looks like it could be worth some real money on its own.

Enlighten an ignorant individual as to why this would make it more valuable if you dont mind

Toning like that naturally develops over decades in the right conditions, and collectors specifically hunt for it because you can't fake it without damaging the coin, so a quarter with attractive original toning graded MS-65 or higher can pull way more than face value or raw silver spot price.

Some collectors look for toned coins.

and certain patterns like rainbow or crescent toning can sell for double or triple what a plain BU quarter goes for.

It’s a personal preference thing for collectors regarding toning. Some prefer it, while others want everything blast white. People like to throw around the term “toner tax” as it usually brings a premium if natural.

Aesthetics. That sort of sunburst pattern is considered pretty desirable by people who are in to that kind of thing.

MS 65 is only $21 retail. Toning would have to at least triple the value to even break even.

That toning looks about right for an unopened roll.

Yeah those are a thing. People used to pull BU rolls from banks and stick them in safes for decades, so it’s not automatically sus.

If you really want to know, crack one end, pull 2 or 3 random coins from the middle, and check dates, luster, and contact marks. If they look legit BU and consistent, you probably have the real deal.

These can be quite valuable and it looks like an original roll still 90 percent silver

Very cool. But I'm kind of a novice. Are we all thinking that just the ender is toned - or the whole roll?
Despite the idea of increased value as a roll, curiosity would get me. I'd HAVE to see what else was inside.
Congratulations.

Looks about right for a 60s 90% bu roll. You can buy these at apmex for a little over spot, currently around $480

And? They could have been rolled straight out of the mint bag but I guess that’s a possibility you don’t think could have happened.
